Perhaps ill-advisedly, Genevieve had woken up earlier that day to come to the mall. Ill-advisedly, she meant because of the murders, who she still wasn’t convinced hadn’t something to do with her past. But she just really needed a cup of coffee, and she had forgotten to buy more since her own had ended. Maybe if she rushed, she could step by the grocers and get some more coffee, so she wouldn’t have to come by so early tomorrow. Yes, that would be the plan. Still, she drank her coffee as slowly as possible, sat a table at the corner of the empty food court.

Genevieve was having a long day. Nothing had happened, specifically. It was more like a general feeling, a tiredness that wouldn't go away. She just wanted to get home and listen to some music, or talk to Jisu over dinner. She cruised the shelves of vinyls on Tracks, looking for something she could listen to it back at home. She didn’t know many of the more modern ones, and she felt lost in time. Still hyper-aware of her surrounding, she heard the sound of someone stepping in, and turned around to look immediately.

bellerojas:
if an art failed to involve fashion, isabelle didn’t care for it. painting was messy, sculpting was tedious, knitting was boring, scrapbooking was a joke, the list went on. the sole reason she entered art murmur was to search for a friend-slash-employee; it turned out magnolia wasn’t working, but she felt happy to give her hellos to genevieve instead.
isabelle stepped back to give the other woman space. “i’m hurt. do i look that scary?” a hand over her heart showed the offense wasn’t serious. she had been quite close to get genevieve’s attention — calling out to her was an easy alternative she’d disregarded. isabelle didn’t pick up on how tense her friend was when she approached. “i’m sorry. i did want to spook you… a little. i won’t do it again. forgive me?”
Genevieve tried to calm down her fast beating heart the moment she realized it was only Isabelle. She smiled, still a little uneasy. “You’re forgiven, Isabelle. I’m the one who’s sorry, really. I didn’t mean to react like this. It’s just with everything that’s been going on...” Her voice trailed off. Of course, she wasn’t really scared of mall killers. Perhaps she should. Instead, what terrified her was the shadows of her past, the ones that could come knocking any time. She was scared for Jisu. But she couldn’t tell the truth, even to a friend, so she opted for carefully crafted lies. “I didn’t take you as someone who likes art, or making art. What brings you here today?”

» wyn giggles softly as she sits across from the older woman. wyn had noticed her coming by the food court a lot more than usual as of late. she assumed that genevieve was just like everyone else - trying to ease their anxiety with sugar. ❝ vanilla ? vanilla is nice. but i’m the opposite of vanilla. i like spicing things up every now and again. i’m all about trying new things, ❞ she tells her as she locks her fingers together and rests her hands on the table in front of her. ❝ you don’t have to give me anything in return - just a hello every time you see me. that’ll be fine enough for me. ❞ it might make her sound desperate, but that’s because she is, just a little. desperate for friendship. companionship. anything that helps make her stay in shrike heights a little less lonely. ❝ oh - yeah i was leaving just now. are you sure you wanna do that ? i have my bike with me, and i live on the outskirts of town. would a bike fit in your trunk ? ❞
Genevieve chuckled at Wyn’s words, a little lost in the sound of her giggles. It had a curious effect on Genevieve, the melodies of her laugh. It sounded like an orchestra. “I’m sure you’re anything but vanilla. I’m sure you’re mint chocolate and blue moon ice cream. All amazing new flavors, that I wish I had around when I was younger.” She looked into Wyn’s eyes, getting a little lost in them and then looking away. She really should stop saying things that could be misconstrued. It would never end well to do so. “Tell you what, if you ever need some new decor, let me know. Modesty aside, I would say I’m a good enough painter.” She stood up, getting her own things and gesturing for Wynona to follow her. “It’s okay, really. I have a daughter, you know. My car is for sure big enough to fit your bike, I made sure it could fit one years ago.”

Truthfully, Genevieve was lost. She just wanted to get a nice gift for Jisu, which took her to tracks. Their house had many vinyls, but most of them belonged to Genevieve herself and were very old. They were classics, really. Either Jisu liked contemporary music or not, it was about time they broad their horizons and started getting to know whatever was currently popular. Although she was very old-fashioned, Genevieve still liked to at least know the direction current artists were taking. “... Judas Priest? Is that what today’s teens are listening to?” Genevieve asked them, confused. “I was just looking for something new.” She wondered if they would find it weird, since for the most part, she dressed like she was still in the 60s. Genevieve was, however, too old to care for what random people thought of her.
the doorbell cuts through tracks like a knife , pulling aisling out of their trance . their boots are kicked up onto the front desk with their hands behind their head , peppermint gum smacking between cherry lips . they sigh loudly , priming themselves for annoyance . a paycheck was required , after all . “ hiiiii , welcome to tracks . new releases are over to the right , but i’d recommend just grabbing some judas priest and calling it a day . it’ll probably be better on your ears anyway . ”

» on the way out of ice scream, wynona can’t help but notice genevieve, thinking that she seems a little tense. though really, it seemed to be a rare occasion that genevieve didn’t look tense, stressed or worried. wyn wonders if that’s just what comes with working duchess’s. they’ve just finished their shift - in fact, they just happened to miss the chance to serve genevieve ( which annoys them - they wish they could have suggested their favourite flavour, prom queen. ) ❝ werewolf tracks - a crowd favourite, ❞ they chime, ❝ you know, whenever you’re feeling like an icy cold treat - you should ask me to serve you. i can give you my sweet employee discount. you should feel honoured that i say that. i’ve never offered anyone my employee discount before. ❞
When she saw Wyn, Genevieve smiled. She’d never admit it, but she’d picked ice cream as a snack for the very specific reason of bumping into them. She felt a strange pull towards them, which she could not yet explain. “I would generally have went with plain vanilla, but it is probably best to try new things.” She made a gesture to the seat in front of her, asking them to sit. “I feel very honored to be important enough for your employee discount. I wish I had something to offer back.” Genevieve took a bite of her ice cream. “Are you leaving already, Wyn? I could give you a ride.”

laney wasn’t sure what she’d expected when she approached the brunette, but open annoyance was not at the top of her list. her brows raised and she let out a laugh meant to diffuse the situation. she had less than five minutes left in her shift and she did not want it to be ruined at the very end. she wouldn’t have even approached someone so close to the end had her manager not insisted on busying her until her every last dollar on her check was earned. “i think that’s my line. y’know,” she gestured to the name tag she wore. “is there anything i can help you find?”
Genevieve shook her head, trying to snap out of it. She had been very rude to the employee, and it hadn’t been her intention. “I am so terribly sorry, I didn’t meant to...” She took a deep breath and forced a smile. One thing she was not was rude, and she was trying her best now not to come off as such. “This whole situation just has me a little paranoid. I was looking for a new hobby, perhaps sculpting, to get my mind off things.” Her gaze turned to the shelves again. “Do you have any recommendations?”

By this point of the afternoon, her shift was beginning to be a little too long, and a little too boring. Genevieve was absentmindedly looking at the door, waiting for someone to come it. Outside her own house, these slow days were the only ones she felt she could relax, because there was only door in front of her that she could watch as her mind fell deep into thought, flying back to her childhood and to when she met her own daughter.
She was absolutely lost in thought, slouched over the counter, but not enough that she wouldn’t see someone walking. She straightened her back, hold her own hand over the counter and held her head up high in response to the person walking in. “Can I help you?” She forced herself to smile.

location: art murmur
In search of distraction and entertainment (and gifts for her daughter), Genevieve was cruising through Art Murmur in her spare time in search for good art equipment. She picked up a few objects before putting them back down, looking for appropriate things for her current projects. She was considering picking up sculpting, since she had never tried it before. Maybe Jisu would be willing to do so too. She was picking up some items, looking at them and wondering if their quality was good enough for herself or their other.
So distracted she was, she didn’t notice the steps coming into the store until it was too late, and the person was very close to her. Genevieve was paranoid. She hated the idea that anyone would get too close to her, and she was already annoyed when she turned to the person. “Can I help you?” She sounded annoyed. Putting her hand inside her pocket, she felt the cold metal of a small knife she had been carrying, and found some solace in that.

location: food court
It had been a long shift. Genevieve was beyond tired of dealing with the “elite” of Shrike, who probably should know better than buying diamonds in a mall. She wasn’t one to shop for food at a mall either, but she was very hungry today (verging on hangry), and wanted to get a treat for her daughter before getting home. Which is why she was eating some ice cream in the food court, and had a box of donuts with her next to her purse. Normally she wouldn’t buy anything with sugar for her daughter, but given the latest attack, maybe both of them could use some unusual treats. She knew she had to be more careful than ever, though, so she was not about to let any other rule slip.
Genevieve was deep in thought, but still, her eyes scanned the crowd. What if one of those people were after her? No one had come looking for Amelia Smith yet. At least not in Shrike. Still, with the attacks, there was a sour taste in her mouth. What if... No. She would not let the fear get to her. Not now.

rachel weisz, bisexual, female + she/her ― hey look, it’s amelia genevieve dubois! she’s forty-eight years old, she’s lived in shrike heights for eight years, and she’s currently working at duchess jewellers. i heard she’s pretty austere, but i think she’s so courageous at the same time. can she make it out alive?
TW: Child abuse, domestic violence and death.
Amelia Genevieve Laurent was born on September 20,1938, to a single uncaring mother in France, when she was halfway through migrating to the US. The young woman resented her daughter, which frequently lead to the small girl being berated for any small misbehavior. Not that it mattered much in the grand scheme of things how that woman treated her, since she would have been in the child’s life for a total of eight years before leaving the child home alone and disappearing into a train. Amelia then tried to fend for herself alone at home for about two weeks before being found by authorities (who had actually come to collect her mother’s debt) and getting sent to an orphanage.
Life in the orphanage was... Rough. Another set of uncaring, unforgiving carers, this time the nuns who made sure to keep the children in check. There were too many children for them to actually give a shit about any of them, so Amelia was pretty much by herself. She was also too old to be adopted, despite being one of the most behaved children and having the highest grades, so she never had hope to leave.
In the orphanage and in her home, all she had was art. She was a talented painter and writer, and dabbled in acting as a teenager. It pushed her through the hard times.
Eventually, it was the arts that saved her from her pain: at age nineteen, when she was no longer a child but a caretaker in the orphanage (which she agreed to only because it was better than trying her luck in the real world), she managed to secure a marriage with an older man who frequently bought her paintings. She became Amelia Genevieve Smith.
That wasn’t good either, honestly. Yes, he was rich, but he was also as uncaring as everyone else in her life, and his only interest in her was that she was young and pretty. He had a wife before her who was now dead, and Amelia had reasons to think her husband had a finger in it. In her mid-twenties, she was sure of it, because it almost happened to her.
And she did what she had to do.
Now a rich widow at twenty-four, Amelia felt the pressure around her. The town had too many eyes, and some of these eyes were mad at her for getting this inheritance. She didn’t know what her husband did for a living, but with time, it was becoming clear that it wasn’t good.
She wasn’t stupid enough to wait around, so she moved away, changed her last name back to Dubois and started going by Genevieve. Throughout the next fifteen years, she moved from town to town, because they would always show up looking for her. Sure, they’d be looking for Amelia Smith, but she wasn’t about to take chances. So she’d move again and again.
It wasn’t until 1977 that she ended up living next to an orphanage by chance. It was the cheapest place to live, so she took it, because she had been trying to hold on to the money she inherited since she got it. And it was there she first saw Jisu, the girl she’d eventually call her daughter.
Genevieve saw... Herself. She saw a tough girl in an orphanage with little to no chances of ever getting adopted. She didn’t really know why she felt this force inside her calling her to adopt the girl, and she did. And one last time, she moved to Shrike, and this time she wouldn’t move again. Her daughter had gone through enough in the system, and she would have structure in her life from then on.
She got a job in Shrike to explain her money, even though she really didn’t have to (her ex-husband was really rich and she still had a lot of her inheritance after all this time), and she bought a gun for her home. She was also very strict with her daughter, making sure she always knew where the girl was, because she would be dead before any henchmen did something to Jisu. Of course she knew it would take time for them to fully develop a mother-daughter bond, but even before they did, Genevieve was very protective and would fight with anyone that dared look at the girl wrong. She took precautions to make sure they were safe.
She also never told anything about her past to Jisu. The girl didn’t need to know. She would protect her by making sure she never knew of Amelia Smith.
After the attacks begun, Genevieve was sure it was someone coming after her. She wasn’t about to leave her daughter, though, and she wasn’t about to make her abandon everything to follow her either. Instead, she decided to stay and fight.
