The dog represents a three legged mutt which used to chase Sean when he was a kid working as a paper boy. After shooting a lot of pictures of a tripod dog with Rocky Schenk - a long time collaborator of the band as a photographer and videomaker - Sean was not pleased with the results and eventually abandoned the project. One of the pictures Schenk took depicting a tripod dog in a playground was spared though and later used for the alternate cover of the same album. It is said that Sean kept searching for the perfect image and, at last, the right picture came through fax from someone inside their record label. Instead of contacting the sender to book a photoshoot with said dog, the drummer decided on the spot to use that specific photo as he deemed it to be exactly what he wanted. The owner is not mentioned in the booklet or anywhere else but it is certain that none of the Alice in Chains members ever owned a three legged dog.
