Mosteiro dos Jerónimos
The 15th November 2019 we made a school trip to Lisbon to visit the “Mosteiro dos Jerónimos”. Because this trip was so interesting i decided to tell a bit about it.(ik this post is late sorry)
A bit about the history
In the past, between the city of Lisbon and the entrance of the Tagus, there was a small beach sheltered from
strong winds and good navigable conditions that, in the age of Discovery, grew in importance. This place was called “Praia do Restelo”. It was the safest and most sought-after port for ships entering the “Tejo” and those preparing to leave Lisbon. In 1502 began it’s construction and the work taking about 100 years. Diogo de Boitoca was the first architect responsible for the project although, over the years, other masters were in charge of the work each corresponding to a new phase of construction. The expenses of this project were paid for by the so called “twenty of the peper”, a tax created by the King consisting of 5% of all they brought from Guinea and India. Here the monks of the order of St.Jerome lived until the year 1833. These monks had the function to pray for the King’s soul and to provide spiritual assistance to the sailors who sailed from Restelo beach to discover new worlds.
Capela - Mor
Here are the remains of King D. Manuel and his wife Queen Maria, his son, King Joao and his wife, Queen Catherine, in a marble tomb placed over statues of elephants. King D. Manuel wanted the monastery to serve as the royal pathron, and the monks were obliged to say a daly mass for the soul of the King and his successors.

Refectory
The monks take their meals together in the refectory. In this place was a atmosphere that lived during the meal one of the Bible or some other religious book was read by one of the monks. So that everyone could hear clearly, they used a wooden pulpit.

Chapter-room
n the Monasteries, the chapter room was the meeting room of the monks. After the morning Mass, the community would gather in the Chapter room for the Rule of St.Augustine. In the center is the tomb of Alexander Herculaneum, historian and novelist in the dec. XIX and first mayor of Belem.

South Portal
Despite it’s grandeur and the richness of it it’s isn’t the main door of the Monastery, however, with much attention, the following are:
-The central figure our Lady of Kings the Holy Mary of Belem, under the protection of which was built the Monastery.
-The figure of Infante D. Henriques, represented as a warrior, wearing an armor and with a sword on his hand.
-Archangel S.Miguel, Protective Angel of Portugal.

Portal Axial
As we were in a place of prayer, we had to maintain silent. Upon entering, we had the feeling of entering a cave. The ceiling is in a shape of a polynerved vault. As we move towards the chanel, the dark area of the entrance gives way to areas of greater light.

Sub-Choir
Here they were placed, in the century XIX the tomb of Vasco da Gama and that of Luís de Camões. Vasco discovered the sea route to india, a fundamental landmark in the history of Portugal and the world. Luís de Camões was the greatest Portuguese poet and one f the most important in European literature. In his work “ Os Lusíadas “ he heroically describes the maritime adventure of the posture.

Visit to excavations
Hey guys, i wanted to talk about something i participated in and I had so much fun and wanted to share it with everyone.
So the 20th July my cousin and I went to a archaeological excavations to the old Castel of Safara with a Group of people of all ages.
The first point we went to see where the water pits hat where used to scare the enemies off and to protect the Castel of being attacked.
After listening to the explication we climb a Hill and from there we had a pretty view on the River Ardila.
We walked to the excavation area where the archaeologists of the SW Archaeology Digs where working hard under the burning sun. They found na old street and 2-3 old houses that where burried.
Then we separated the group in two and while the one group was climbing a hill to listen to the next got to see pieces they found during the excavation. They found pieces of Pots, old precious plates, stones to make flour, evidences of Romans and Italians, Circular stones with a hole in the middle to make thread, ect. I found it really interesting what they found only on this small place and those objects are really pretty and have so much history.
When we changed with the other group we got to see the king's throne “ O Trono do Rei ” made of stone. They call it the king’s throne because the archaeologists think speculate that might have been actually the king’s throne and because it looks like one.
While we explored a bit and listened to everything carefully some of the archaeologists served biscuits, cold water and some ice tea. They were very nice and gave their best to talk portugesa because most of them come from England, America and Australia. I’ve even got to translate a bit. A big thank you to everyone that helped and for working hard under the burning un almost every day. I’ll hope next year that i can help a bit and participate a bit.
I wished I could have meet all of them but from time to time the archaeologists changed with others so we dint met everyone. I had lots of fun on that trip and learned a lot. Well my cousin gave me the dead grip while we were climbing the hill and almost made us fall and drag everyone that was behind us, but expect that it was a nice little trip. I hope next year we cando it again.
P.S. Follow SW Archaeology Digs on Facebook and Instagram for more~
See y’all on my next trip

jHi guys,so i traveled with my class to “Sintra” to visite “A Quinta da Regaleira”. I wanted to show everyone some things about that place because it’s realy beauteful and the storys behind it ate realy interesting. Quinta da Regaleir was build inthe end of the 19th with enigmatic structures and luxurious gardens of the poetic owner António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro and the scenographer-architect Luigi Manini

The poetic history behind this wonderful and calm garden and the majestics and luxurious pieces of art is to “to go to hell and to come back to the light” also in his case means to go deep down into your soul and to know yourself to life in piece with body and soul. In the majestetic palaces builded in the 19th tells the story of the owner Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro and in the “Casa da Renascença” tells storys about Kings and Queens with beauteful portraits on the walls and wonderful antiquities. This experience was realy interesting and after the trip on the wonderful gardens everyone was realy relaxed and in a good mood. So i think i sayd enghout for now. If someone is interested in more informations dont hesitate to ask me. See ya on the next trip.
In love Ami
