it is usually said that gale represents katniss's past and peeta represents her future. a choice to forget the games and return to her old life, or remember them and move forward into an unfamiliar terrain: healing.

yet, although this certainly is true, there is something more there.

because peeta does connect katniss to her past. one that katniss has tried to bury. where birds stop to listen to the sweet tenors of a voice. where her hair bounces in two braids instead of one. where she proudly stretches her hand up high to sing for her class.

that is a past of color and softness. of innocence. of safety. this is the past that peeta holds onto and reminds katniss of in the cave. even when she has convinced herself that it is no longer valuable to her survivalist lifestyle. 

this is the past peeta continues to hold onto through the series, even when he is made to forget parts of his own past.

gale, on the other hand, is the past that centers around survivor katniss. the past where katniss buries all notions of singing, ribbons, and beauty to focus on what is nessasary. putting food on the table. gale and katniss's bond is forged by their shared suppression under panem's rule. and it is real, of course it is real, but it is an alliance formed over a mutual need to survive.

but gale never knew the katniss who wore two braids instead of one. or her father that would sing for the birds to hear. gale can not connect katniss to that past. peeta does. 

and in many way, of course he does. because while peeta does represent katniss's future, he more broadly represents memorial. painting a murdered child to remind the gamemakers of their cruelty. offering flowers to a girl who lost her sister too soon. a death that quickly forgotten by others in the series. 

and so peeta offers katniss memory. and that is harder to face than returning to her old life. because it is wrapped in grief. but it is also where healing can begin.

and with each step of healing taken, katniss can go back. still changed, of course. they all have changed. but she can go back. back to that little girl with two braids. eagerly standing on her tippy toes. to sing a simply song to the birds. for no other reason than to relish in their thoughtful silence.
