Akeshima Metaverse Partners AU (Part 5)
Third semester. (Under cut)
None of the Thieves nor Akechi see Mishima until Joker, Akechi, and Kasumi are preparing to enter Maruki's Palace. Joker hasn't asked Akechi about Lapin if only because he has absolutely no idea how to approach the subject, and of course Kasumi knows nothing about it.
Mishima's wearing a hood low so Joker can't tell who it is, and Akechi just sort of rolls his eyes but sort of looks surprised. After all, he figured Maruki's spell would be over Mishima as well, what with Maruki being at fault for Mishima's involvement to begin with. He asks Joker how well Lapin has done with the Thieves, considering the lack of attacks, and Joker awkwardly points out that Lapin... didn't join them. At all. They still don't know who Lapin is or much about their connection to Akechi besides what they could glean from their encounter in Shido's Palace.
Akechi is confused and asks Mishima why the hell he didn't join the Thieves. It's the obvious option, isn't it? He doesn't get why Lapin is being so stubborn about it.
As he's talking, he's interrupted by Mishima suddenly pulling an arm back and fucking decking him with a right hook, then storming off, leaving Akechi reeling. When Akechi regains some of his sense, looking even more baffled than before, Joker points out that Lapin was clearly torn up about Akechi's death and questions why Akechi didn't go see Lapin. Akechi, of course, brushes it off, again stating that he didn't expect Lapin to be so stupid, but it's clear it's bothering him, and Joker notices how Akechi is careful to refer to them as Lapin rather than giving away the identity they apparently want to keep secret.
Joker does try to nudge Akechi a couple more times about it, but he doesn't budge. There's no point in tormenting Mishima with his presence when he'll be dead again by the end of all of it, Akechi figures. (And maybe part of it is that Akechi is scared he'll lose his resolve if he does go see Mishima. Akechi can't let himself live under someone else's thumb again, even if it means dying instead, but if anyone can make him question that, put doubts in his mind...)
As they're going through Maruki's Palace, they find a tape of Lapin meeting with Maruki. They're clearly inside the palace, yet Lapin's in their regular clothes, not their thief attire, affirming that they still have little will to fight. Akechi figures that Mishima is going along with Maruki's perfect world, at first.
In the tape, Maruki apologizes to Mishima, sayign that he never meant for Mishima to get hurt like that. He truly thought that he and Akechi would be able to help each other, that Mishima could be the friend Akechi so clearly needed. Mishima laughs bitterly because he sure as hell tried. When Maruki asks what Mishima wants, so that Maruki can help him, Mishima tells Maruki that he'd never give Mishima what he wants. Maruki proposes otherwise, and so Mishima tells him. That part of the tape gets garbled and corrupted, but the dismay on Maruki's face is clear as day, before he admits that Mishima was right, Maruki cannot, will not, give him that. Mishima chuckles because he already knew it and walks away.
(Akechi, though, he's more than familiar enough with Mishima's mumbling to be able to make out what he said. He pretends he doesn't, albeit badly, clearly shaken up by what he's heard. How is he supposed to react to hearing Mishima say that all he wants is to disappear and be forgotten? That can't be it, there's no way Mishima would want that, he was like Akechi, wanting so badly for people to notice and care... But maybe it is the truth. Maybe Akechi truly has hurt him beyond mending.)
When they send the calling card and go to confront Maruki, they find Lapin, in his thief gear, standing in the way. All he wants, though, is a moment to talk to Akechi, something Joker is perfectly willing to give them. Akechi basically gets glared/threatened into staying behind a moment. He's not looking forward to this conversation, but... Maybe he owes Mishima that much, at least.
Mishima doesn't ask why Akechi didn't come see him, didn't tell Mishima he was alive. Instead, he asks if he ever meant anything to Akechi. If they were ever friends, or if Mishima standing by him truly was that meaningless.
Akechi decides to lie. Because it's better this way. Mishima needs to move on, to let go of Akechi, and if Akechi has to hurt him to make it happen... Well, it'll just be one last note on his long list of sins.
He tells Mishima that no, it meant nothing. Mishima was helpful, certainly, but at the end of the day, Akechi only ever cared about getting back at Shido. Mishima's loyalty was for nothing.
Something truly does break in Mishima, at that point. He just smiles and accepts Akechi's words, then wishes him luck and turns to walk away. Akechi figures it's over now, and even if Mishima doesn't fight with the Theives this time, he'll join them after, seeing that's where he belongs.
(He's wrong, as always. But Mishima has better things to do than continue humoring this. It's not over, though. Not at all.)

persona 5 au where Akechi, through a comedy of errors, thinks Mishima is the leader of the phantom thieves and tries to develop a homoerotic rivalry with him instead (Mishima just thinks he bagged a celebrity)
