Relief and anxiety battled within Darby when she saw Adrian. Anxiety won out when Adrian ripped Trevor away from her, then it became ruler when he threw a punch. “Adrian!” She covered her eyes. Trevor shouted, “This is between us!” And swung back. Darby squeezed herr eyes shut, hands over her face in fear and discomfort. This was never anything she wanted.
Trevor scrapped in his youth, but he wasn’t prepared for Adrian’s imposing physicality. He spent so much time on everything that wasn’t exercise that Trevor just wasn’t as strong. Darby couldn’t bare it. She collapsed on her knees, memories of the alley in Texas, memories of Johann in Northpoint, they all started to paralyze her.
Adrian knew he was running later than usual. The little velvet box weighed heavy in his pocket. It begging to be cradled in his palms while he kneeled before her. Sure, Darby will say no but he won’t stop. He’d never stop till she’d see that this was real. He wanted a life with her.
Stepping down the landing, he heard the first voice rising against the settling noise. Darby’s dainty tone infused with some deep distress. Just then, another voice barked back at her. Adrian sped up taking the corner with speed. The sight before him rattled the man to his core. Trevor’s fingers curled tight around Darby, shaking her tiny frame as he ranted.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Adrian took a fist full of the man’s shirt, whipping him back towards him. “I told you to leave her alone,” before he could gather the strength to deal with his anger, Adrian lifted his hand and swung a tight clenched fist directly into the man’s jaw.

End of the World | Darby, Adrian, & Trevor

Darby checked her phone, making sure she was meeting Adrian at the right place. She was already running a couple minutes late for lunch, so she didn’t want to waste time by going to one place then another. She decided to take a shortcut through an alley she’d been down a million times. Finally, after all these years, Darby no longer felt uncomfortable in alleys.
“Darby.”
She jumped and turned, although she knew it was Trevor from his voice. “Trevor? What are you doing here?” She smiled, although she also looked confused. “What do you mean? I came by the other day.” His face was serious, ominous. Darby didn’t really notice. “Wait, when?” She asked, walking toward Trevor. He stood still, and replied, “The other day. You missed me since you were busy washing Adrian off you.” Trevor looked her up and down angrily. “Wh...” Darby was really confused now. “Saturday? I wasn’t... I was just showering. I did yoga and - wait, I don’t need to explain myself to you.” Darby shook her head, hurt in her eyes. “What is going on with you, Trevor?”
“With me?” Trevor stepped forward now, once. “What’s with you? Why are you giving that prick the time of day? We both know what you and I have, stop playing games with me!” Darby backed up a step, beginning to question everything. She didn’t speak for fear of setting him off. Trevor stepped closer, Darby stepped back. “Be still, Darby!” Darby froze, eyes wide. “We were supposed to be together! Me and you, together in our practice. Don’t you understand?” Darby shook her head. “Practice?” Trevor waved his arms around, frustrated by her confusion. “Our witchcraft!”
This was all too much. Trevor’s chest heaved. “I’ve known since we were in high school - all about your practice. I saw the pictures, everyone saw. I knew you were meant to be mine.” He took her hands now, and Darby stopped herself from pulling away out of caution. “Those were lies, Trevor.” Darby whispered. “Those girls set me up, made me pose for those pictures. I am not a witch. That label has haunted me and done nothing but hurt me, I’ve told you that.” Trevor began shouting now, pretty much incoherently, his hands moving from her hands to her shoulder, shaking her. “You’re a liar! Why are you lying? You’re supposed to be mine! You’re ruined!” He shook harder, becoming more violent. Darby was already trying to calculate a way out, but she might not have a chance.

Darby smiled warmly, grateful that although Adrian was a man in charge of many things, he didn’t seem to want to be in charge of Darby’s decisions. “Good... There are a lot of really beautiful homes here. They seem spacious. I’m sure you could find at least one you like.”
She felt good that Adrian already felt comfortable here, already sending people around. Darby giggled, laced her fingers in his, and kissed him.

Darby sighed against his lips in relief, clenching his shirt in her hands. She smiled up at him now, just grateful that he seemed to give her unconditional forgiveness despite her plentiful mess-ups. “I’m just so sorry... I never should have left. But, I need to be honest.” Darby laced her fingers in his. “Wake Forest is more my speed, Adrian. New York is so... cold and fast.” She laughed nervously.
“Oh - okay, did you at least give them directions?”

On the first page of our story The future seemed so bright Then this thing turned out so evil I don’t know why I’m still surprised Even angels have their wicked schemes And you take that to new extremes But you’ll always be my hero Even though you’ve lost your mind
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn But that’s all right because I like the way it hurts Just gonna stand there and hear me cry But that’s all right because I love the way you lie I love the way you lie Oh, I love the way you lie

Darby walked out in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, just in time to see Adrian turning away from the door. She was so caught up in what she had to say, she didn’t realize that.
“I was thinking. While I was in the shower, I was thinking.” She wrung her hands together and began to pace. “About us... Adrian,” She sighed, rubbing her face with her hands. “I want to be with you.” Her voice shook. “If... if that means sharing time with Alexander, okay. If that means... meeting him, maybe spending time with the both of you. I can try that, too - because I love you.” She nodded, done with her little speech. That’s when she realized where Adrian was. “Oh - was there someone here?”

All it would take was a knock to get the ball rolling. Trevor had been picking apart the possibilities all morning, working out the perfect way to tell Darby his true feelings about both her and that ass Adrian. Just tell her, she’ll see. Trevor knew she’d see.
Knock, knock, knock. He’s ready.
Not for this. Why was the ass here? Where was Darby? “Uh...” Trevor swallowed. Silence. No, not silence. Water. Running water. The shower? No, Darby confided in Trevor that she’d never... No, Darby wouldn’t. Not with Adrian. Could he have tricked her?
“What are you doing here?” Trevor asked through gritted teeth. “Where is Darby?”

Darby fidgeted with the hem of her shirt, nodding. “Oh okay. That’s nice, time with Lucy, then?” She glanced around her apartment, feeling the urge to get up and do anything that wasn’t this. Still, Darby did miss talking to Adrian. Right now, with that cut on his face, she was reminded of one of first times she’d spent time with him.
The cool air in her apartment had reminded her how warm she was, the sheen of sweat on her back beginning to chill her. “I-” Darby stood, suddenly aware of how gross she looked, that she might smell. “I have to shower now. Just, um... just wait here okay? We can talk about that cut on your eyebrow when I get out.” A smile played on her lips as she gazed for a moment at him. The, Darby dashed away.
