Instagram Algorithm 2024
Like any other algorithm, Instagram has the same set of rules that are responsible for ranking the particular content on the platform, for instance, which post and reel should be shown to other Instagram users in the home feed or the explore page.

How does it work?
It looks at the information regarding the content and finds out from the behavior of the users what they are searching for or what they like to see, so according to their interests, it will arrange the content for the right people.
The goal of this algorithm is simply to provide a smooth user experience in terms of content. According to Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram, this is a ranking that gives favor to some posts more than others.
“I know a lot of you are skeptical of ranking,” said Mosseri in a reel way back in 2022, “but it does help us make sure that Instagram is more valuable to every person who uses the platform.”
Mosseri also said that “Instagram doesn’t have a singular algorithm that oversees what people do and don’t see on the app.”
Along with that, they are using a variety of algorithms, classifiers, and processes tailor-made specifically to watch each part of the app, such as posts, reels, searches, and more.
2024 algorithm mechanism
For Feed:
Interest: This includes analyzing the historical data of your search intent and past behavior with similar content.
Post Popularity: Check the analysis of the content and how it has responded in the past.
Poster Information: mining down the historical data, finding the content post frequency, and more.
Interaction History: Seeking the historical data of the user to see how you like the other user’s content and with what frequency.
For Stories:
User engagement: It will understand how much you engage with a particular account’s stories, including the DMs.
Viewing history: It analyzes the number of views on an account’s stories to prioritize those so that you don’t miss any updates.
Closeness: This will analyze your overall relationship with the author and how likely you are to be connected as friends or family.
For Reel:
User activity: It will mine down your past activities and behavior in terms of reels you have liked, saved, re-shared, commented on, and ultimately engaged with.
Author interaction: It will detect the interaction with the person who posted the reel before, which tells the algorithm about your level of interest in that particular content.

For the Explore Page:

Replayed now counts:
Previously, the algorithm was focused on the only first-time views that were counted as the reel’s view count, but in the latest algorithm, it has been changed so that every time you watch a reel, it will be counted as the view.
Reels with word marks are raked lower:
Reels with word marks will be ranked lower. Including the TikTok logo as well as watermarks from video editing platforms.
Mosseri did say that videos created outside of the Instagram app that don’t have a word are not affected.
European users can now see chronological feeds:
In response to the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), Instagram has announced that people from Europe can have the option to see the posts, stories, and reels from the people that they follow, which will be ranked in chronological order from newest to oldest.
This feature will also apply to search results, which will no longer be personalized based on a user’s previous activities and interests.
