A reflection of the Interface Design class
This class was very interesting to me, specially since web designing is what I love most from my career, this class opened my eyes to so many different and new things I can’t wait to try in the future. The theory classes were interesting and what we were seeing in them it really helped us to develop great ideas for our projects later.
Working in a group project can always be kind of stressful but if you manage to know the strengths and weakness of each group member, you can learn how to work together and how can each member can provide something special to the project. I think overall we did a great job, we manage to capture essentially what our application is about and we could define what can be done to improve the project if it gets to become a reality. I think our interface is easy to work with and to understand and the Google glasses layout could be more interesting if the model of glasses could allow us to make something more real and functional.
I like the excursion to the Wikitude offices. It was for me so interesting to get a glimpse of all the projects the studio has work on and to see how their plans for the future look so promising. I would love to get a chance to work in this kind of studio and I would like to learn more about augmented reality and the variety of options it has for users to get more involved in real moments in a digital way.
I also like the Open Source workshop. I thought the projects the lecturer showed us opened our eyes and make our brains work relating what we saw and what we work on in our everyday life.

The Shape of Design
As designers and artists we tend to create designs and pieces that can transmit messages to the public they are exposed to. The interesting thing here is how each person can react differently to what they are seeing. It’s amazing how we tend to explain and give a meaning to something through our own experiences and knowledge in life and how we can end up making stories to explain them. In this reading, the author talked about how interesting it is to make our viewers think about what they are seeing and how this in some kind of way is what can make our designs and products memorable. The job of a designer is to deliver something that can turn heads around and make people question their judgment and their way of thinking and reacting. By adding something different our work can express itself in a different life, giving our design a shape so meaningful and completely out of the box.

What I love about Graphic design
Being a graphic design student your mind is open to absorb everything you have desired to learn about. I found out that in each aspect of my life I can see how my career is going to give the tools that I need to shape something and give it a modern look, make it useful and interesting at the same time.
One of the fields that I most enjoy working on as a graphic designer is web design. Although I’m aware that I have a long, and very long, way to go before I can consider myself as a good web designer, if that ever ends up happening, I can’t help but find myself interested in everything that involves this field including the ability that some people had to design interfaces for social media such as Facebook and twitter. In the last years of my career as a student I have been taking classes that are shaping me up into knowing the basic tools for web designing and these had led me more intrigued and more willing to dig into knowing more and more about this field. Web designing in the last few years has become a way of selling and attracting customers and users into something that a brand wants to communicate. And having worked before on social marketing I’m even more intrigued in knowing how design can help making an interface functional and a complete success. Interfaces for social media are supposed to me interesting and functional, they have to be easy to understand without having a manual to the right for the user to read it before starting to navigate. And I think that in some ways this is what has made twitter famous and at the same time to hard to understand for some people. Why can I write in 140 characters that is useful and can communicate to others? But at the end of the day Twitter provide us an easy way to interact with people all around the world and get news so easy without the need of watching tv or entering into a news website and I think that is what makes it popular and functional. I think what fascinates me about deigning websites and interfaces is that you get to see how good or bad your design works by watching a user interact with it. It may not be as easy as making a poster and putting it in front of a public to see but the result and opinions you get through it are the truest that you can get. Making websites and interfaces is more than just making them pretty or good looking, it involves architecture of design, planning, knowing the background of the client you are working for and knowing the best way to make the users interact with each other staying true to the client and never forgetting the main goal of making the interface: sell and creating a good social world. With a client’s website you basically get to create this world where the main thing is your clients product and the people that lives there, your users, get to interact with each other according to how they react to the product and its personality.

Open Source Design Workshop
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For our Open Source Design workshop we worked making an easy portable kind of card that carries seeds in it and can be given from one person to another for a possibility to create their own garden. We had t create a way to carry the seeds and the soil that is functional and won't affect the way the card is folded. It was a fun workshop where we also saw some fun projects made by our fellow classmates.

Technology as a way to understand what is human
This reading was an article describing the field that Dr. Hiroshi Ishiguro specializes in and showing some of his points of view he expressed in an interview done by the author of this article. Dr. Hiroshi Ishiguro has a background of working with android, geminoid and telenoid robots. In his interview he expresses how he sees the future in human and robot interaction. He says that now we are used to see differentiation between humans and robots and that, in my opinion, is what makes robots so fascinating, the fact that something that is clearly not human can at the same time do activities, gestures and movements that humans do. But Dr. Hiroshi says that in the future we won’t see this differentiation as easy as we can see it now, because he says that robots will fuze into technology, making it not that easy to spot when robotics are being used. He also states that our world in the future will continue changing as more robotization keeps taking part in our everyday life activities. I think that if we think about it, this is what we obviously expect, that technological advances are going to facilitate our work and human activities making robots that can take our place in doing this kind of activities we are so used to do. So after reading this article it made me realize how advanced at this stage we are and how close in the future we will be able to see robotics as a part of our daily activities and everyday life.

Wicked Problems worth solving
This reading talked a little bit about what I’ve been working on in one of my final projects for one of my classes: Consumption and solving problems. While reading through it made me realize how we act in some ways to all the products that we consumed and how design takes a big role in this. We often buy products based on their appearance rather than on their function and if they are actually good or not. Design has the job of making things more interesting and better looking and consumers are drown by this to buy a product. It is our job as designers to make sure we can provide a good design but at the same time represent what the product is worth for. The reading also talked about mass production of products by big companies. For example, apple has been doing this for a while, creating a version of an iPod and then adding just a few new functions to make it more appealing but not without making it look bigger and better looking. This draws consumers to buy the product as soon as they can even though they don’t necessarily need them because their old version actually worked perfectly. Another thing that the reading talked about was wicked problems. A wicked problem is normally a problem that doesn’t have a solution or an easy way of solving. For example, poverty, it cannot be solved without improving the education and education cannot be solved without improving politics, and so on. But even though this problems might not have solutions design has a big part in the solving process or in the process overall. So as designers it is important to know about this and try to cooperate with what we do in the best way that we can without expecting an immediate solution.

Group Project Idea
For our final project we decided to work on an application that Julian told us was something Wikitude was interesting in seeing come to reality. We work on the concept and decided to give it a go. We work on involving the 3 projects in one whole one involving a mobile application that can be adapted to be used in Google Glasses. The basic idea was to create a way of making newspapers, books and magazines more appealing to people who are usually more inclined to digital and web applications. How? Well, we thought if digital is what they want then lets make our printing material work together with a digital output. We decided on making an application that can allow the users to navigate into more of the material they are reading on their printed communication. We would do this through augmented reality: The user can read a paper and with its phone he can use this application and "scan" or direct it to a specific image or news that interested him and this application will direct him to videos or special content showing further information about the events, stories or whatever the user is interesting in knowing more about.
We worked on a name and logo and made an interface for both mobile and google glasses.

The hypersurface is where the real and the virtual meet each other. Through the hypersurface, the viewer can enter the work of art, be part of it, as well as interact with it. In performing through the hypersurface, the viewer enters the world of simulation while maintaining a direct rapport with their own environment.

Critical Design
While reading this short article I had to relate my point of view in speculative and critical design to the one expressed in the reading. But first I had to question what are my thoughts exactly in this matter. Speculative and critical design involve risk, differentiation and being able to express something in your designs that totally take you out of your comfort zone. At the end of the day, isn’t that what we as designers want to achieve through our work? It is clear that in our society people tend to design according to what is trending and what is already done or seen by the society as “good” or “normal.” But the world of design should be about the exact opposite and show what makes a designer a powerful and different mind. Each designer should be able to take risks and design freely according to its own mind and perspective, which is what is supposed to make design speculative and beautiful, the differentiation that each designer can provide to the world. I think the reading made me think and define what speculative and critical design really are about, making me see what approaches I want to implement in my work in the future and which I’m sure I will be avoiding in everything I work on.
