mythology; the legend of cú
Born the demigod son of the sun god Lugh and Dechtire, the sister of the king of Ulster, Cú Chulainn’s real name was Setanta. When he was seven years old, his mother brought him to the court of his uncle King Conchobar. There, he tried to join a hurling game being played by the Boy-troops of Ulster. The Boy-troops were a combination of a boy scout troupe and an army-in-training. They were the best and brightest of the noble youths of Ulster, put through rigorous academic and physical training to build them up into the kingdom’s next generation of heroes. When they saw the short, seemingly delicate boy asking to play with them, nobody wanted him to be on their team. However, Setanta insisted on playing and thus, all of the Boy-troops gathered into one team while the other team included Setanta alone. Setanta was able to score many points against the other team, and not once was the ball taken from him. Finally, the angry boys jumped on him, intending to seriously injure or kill this newcomer who had humiliated them. This angered Setanta to the point that he entered his later infamous riastrad or warp spasm — a battle fury that would not only put him in a berserker state, but would twist his body so he no longer looked human. In this state, he defeated the boys and knocked most of the unconscious. Afterwards, when they had regained consciousness, they were willing to accept him as one of their own and even elected him the leader of the Boy-troop. A couple of days later, Conchobar was invited to a feast at the house of Culan the Smith. He wanted to bring his nephew along, but Setanta opted to stay with the Boy-troop and finish his game, saying that he would follow his uncle as soon as he was done playing. By the time he had finished, it was dark. He amused himself with playing with his hurling stick and ball as he walked to Culan’s house. Meanwhile, Conchobar had forgotten that Setanta would follow him. Therefore, as it became late an Culan suggested releasing his infamous hellhound that served as a guard dog, Conchobar agreed. By the time Setanta arrived at Culan’s house, the hellhound was standing guard. Upon seeing Setanta, it pounced on him as if to devour him. Instead of screaming, pissing his pants, and running home to mommy like a sensible boy his age, Setanta used his hurling stick to hit the ball down the hellhound’s throat so hard that it came out of the dog’s rear end and took most of the digestive system with it. Hearing the commotion, Culan and his guests came out of the house. They saw the dead dog and heard Setanta’s explanation. While most of them were impressed with Setanta’s deed, Culan mourned the death of his dog. The smith complained that now, his flock and his house would go unprotected because he would never again have a dog that could match this one. In response, Setanta offered to be his dog while raising a pup of the same breed to serve as a new guard dog. And thus he cast aside his name of Setanta and took on the name of Cú Chulainn meaning “Hound of Culan”. As Setanta grew up, he had many adventures. He sought to marry a woman named Emer when he was sixteen, but was told to train a year in the Shadowlands with the warrior woman Scathach before she would accept his proposal. During his training, he learned all the techniques of being a warrior, as well as the 18 runes. Toward the end of his training, another warrior woman, Aoife, invaded Scathach’s lands. Cú helped defeat Aoife, and later produced a son named Connla with her. As Scathach’s favorite student, he was given the Gae Bolg, a cursed spear that could invert causality. Scathach’s last request to him was for him to kill her. She had, as a human, killed too many and known too much. Her very existence was being turned into a concept. She wanted to die when she still could, but Cú was ultimately unable to strike down the woman who had taught him everything. Instead, he left the Shadowlands and never saw her again. After returning home, he and Emer eloped.
However, shortly afterwards, the war over the Táin Bó Cúailnge ( The Cattle Raid of Cooley ) started. Queen Medb, wanting to seize the Donn Cúailnge ( The Brown Bull of Cooley ), united the other three provinces of Ireland to lay siege to Ulster. The Ultonians were at the time cursed by the Goddess Macha to suffer labor pangs and general weakness in times of invasion. The only ones exempt from the curse were women and children. At the time, Cú Chulainn was only 17 and, since he had been born in a fairy sidhe, he was technically not of Ulster. Therefore, he confronted the entire army by himself and started slaughtering their men. He and Medb eventually agreed that Cú would engage one warrior of the united army each day at a ford. The army was only allowed to advance as the two were fighting. In this way, he limited the movements of the united army with a minimal loss of life. He held back the army by himself for a long time, until the Ulstermen were finally roused out of their weakness. The united army was repelled and Medb herself was captured by Cú. However, since he disliked killing women and kings, he instead escorted her back to her camp. More adventures followed, including a tragic one during which Cú slew his own son by accident. Eventually, when he was 27, Medb, smarting for revenge against Cú, gathered all his enemies together for an assault on Ulster. She also conspired to trick Cú to break all the geas that he has held, including one about not eating dog meat. He was spiritually weakened in the ensuing combat and was finally fatally wounded by his own spear, which he had been forced to hand over under demand from a bard. He tied himself to a rock to die on his feet, and it was not until the Morrígan, in the shape of a crow, landed on his shoulder that his enemies knew Cú Chulainn was dead and dared to approach him.
