Immortals - Fall Out Boy
'Immortals' gets instant points through nostalgia, serving as the lead track for 2014 animated hit 'Big Hero 6'. The track balances FOB's heavy sound with a perfect dose of pure wonder, with the lyricism showcasing two sides of the movie itself; "we could be immortals" being Hiro rising up through struggles and setbacks and demonstrating his resilience, but "not for long" tackling a surprisingly mature theme with eloquence. Life can indeed be short, with one big burst of brilliance; the film's young protagonists are forced to recognise this as they navigate the death of a close friend.
With lead vocalist Patrick Stump remaining in a comfortably high range, the song rarely changes tone or dynamic. FOB are unafraid to, unlike their usual material, repeat. Riffs and drum patterns are placed at similar intervals, with the tune retaining a throbbing, somehow reassuring beat. Where the song truly shines is its electronic timbre - FOB add to their typical rock instrumentation with high pitched leads and vocal cuts, creating a strangely syncopated sounding rhythm that sounds familiar yet boundary-breaking at the same time. With auto-tuned segments that surge into a soaring chorus, quavered single-note basslines never sounded so good.
FOB later added 'Immortals' to their 2015 album "American Beauty/American Psycho", which was met with critical acclaim. It goes to show 'Immortals' was so good a song, it didn't deserve to only be left as "the main track to a kids movie".
