Decided to draw a comparison chart for my Shep throughout the trilogy. I really like her appearance in ME1. She seemed relatively young and green at the start, and the only things that would tell of the real state of woman would be the N7 armor and facial scars left from Akuze.
Pre-ME2 and ME2 is where her appearance gets a twist. I see the commander always gravitating towards bolder hair colors. The choice was always red/bright red, though. She kept this one red shade since she was 14, and just before ME2 she went full-on red. That sure enhanced her appearance in the second game. She kept this color ever since and started applying heavier makeup. Shep’s a marine, but since there aren’t regs against most forms of makeup, she went for it. From time to time Shepard likes feeling just extra beautiful, for the fun of it.
However, Shepard’s scars got worse since the Lazarus project as the ME2 events progressed. She has her Renegade traits, but she’s morally way more of a Paragon. So the proper integration of implants wasn’t there not because of aggressive behavior, but due to internalized stress. Especially with the commander’s tendency to bottle things up. Shepard’s however, handled things well. She was trained for enduring at times insane amounts of stress, after all. But still, there was a prominent bodily reaction to what she was constantly living through. Miranda and Dr. Chakwas were keeping an eye on the commander, though. Shepard’s tough alright, but she’s still human. Makes you wonder what’s really going on in her head.
The two helped the commander out, still. The implants were adjusted to Shepard’s body more precisely, there were regular mental exams, and the scars finally started healing properly. By the start of ME3 Shepard maintained her appearance, but now she doesn’t impose worry about her well-being onto her friends. Now she looks just… gracefully intimidating. And overall, better and healthier. Despite the circumstances, half a year on Earth did her good.
