He turned up to look at Elrond, who slipped his hand into Maglor’s and squeezed, and Gil-galad was struck by two memories. The first was of Orodreth, and how he looked at Finduilas once, as she braided his hair for him. It was an unimportant memory, but it  had stuck with him, even after all this time. The second was of his own father, and something he had told him once, standing on a stern of a ship. ‘We are all an amalgam of the good and bad we do and experience in life, my son. The greatest heroes are the ones who can look their bad in the eye, and choose to do good. And the highest form of justice you can deliver as a king, as a leader, is to empower your people to make that choice. To support them. Never let someone’s evil define them.’
((ps, please follow my main blog @anarima i’m moving over to posting there exclusively!!! <3))

Fëanáro was seething, and Nolofinwë..... Well, Nolofinwë was congenially amused, which, of course, steamed Fëanáro up even more.
“How can you be so content with that?! Eru, you were a king longer than I and are his elder, too!!!” Fëanáro and Nolofinwë both had just taken a stern lecturing on insubordination from their younger brother. From Arafinwë. The baby. He had not even been fully of age when Fëanáro’s eldest son had been born!!! And while it was true that they had been in his court, he, the king of the Noldor, the Noldorin monarchical situation was odd, and they are, after all, his elder brothers.
“Am I?” Nolofinwë asked, brow arched, turning to Fëanáro, seemingly deeply amused by his deep seated upset.
“Are you what?!”
“His elder. One does not age in the Halls, and both you and myself have spent the majority our ages on this earth in there, whilst he has been out here. By many standards of reason, one could easily make the argument he is our elder brother now.”
Fëanáro’s ears flattened, and his face blanched at the sudden feeling of horrific realization blossoming in his stomach.
“And,” Nolofinwë said, primly, smoothing the wrinkles from his clothes and fighting back a smile, “By that same reason, I am well and truly your elder brother as well.”
It took every fibre of ounce Nolofinwë was in possession of, and he was in possession of quite a bit, to fight back peals and gails of hearty laughter at the look of sheer, abject horror on his brother’s face. “Fëanáro......?”
“I am going back to the Halls.”
I want a fic with this exact specific concept (which probably means I should just write it myself):
Feanor or Fingolfin (or both) are reborn in Valinor in the third or fourth age and challenge Finarfin on something in his own court, and Finarfin says the kingly Noldorin equivalent of “I’ve been ruling for longer than you and all of your descendants combined, so get the fuck out of my face.” Cue the scolded brother being the appropriate mix of horrified, amused, and impressed at the fact that their sweet younger brother has grown a spine.

i’ve been wanting to write a post for weeks talking about how much i........ hate the whole edgy ‘elves suck’ discourse thats gotten popular and why i hate it and think that it’s terrible but i...... don’t have the emotional energy for that so i just wanna say guys? please bear in mind that not everyone interprets race in tolkien’s works the same way, and making blanket statements about a race, even a fantasy one, can make people upset and uncomfortable. just be more careful when talking about races, even fantasy ones.
and please for my sake, and probably others, please please tag elf hate.

the fact that there’s an argument in this fandom over ‘is sauron/melkor monstrous looking or a big sexy” is just proof that this fandom is way less thirsty and way less sinful than it likes to think it is

i think...... given what we know about how elrond and elros were raised, and what we can conjecture of their perceptions of elves and men based off what we know, that its time we let go of this whole ‘elros is the wild, tempest hearted twin because he chose the ADVENTURE of mortality, and kingship! elrond is chill and soft and intellectual bc he chose to just be gil-galad’s herald and be an elf.’ no friends. no. elros chose to be mortal to get away from batshit elves and to not spend any longer on this god foresaken planet than he had to. he got a job with responsibilities, got married and raised a family in 500 years. elros was the mature, mild mannered one who just wanted a quiet life. elrond? elrond saw the apeshit lunatics that are Elves and was like ‘hm, yes, my kin.’ elrond got a job with way less responsibilities, remained semi-feral and developmentally a teenager for 3,000 years. please rewrite the narrative with these two.

I know 22 September is Bilbo and Frodo Baggins’ birthday—but let us not forget that it is also the date in which Samwise Gamgee, last of the Ring-bearers, leaves Middle-earth for ever to reunite with Frodo.

X for Maedhros and Fingon
“If I commanded you to give me the Silmaril, as your High King, would you do it?” Fingon asked him this in all seriousness. It was an imprudent question, one that Maedhros recognized as belonging to the Fingon of their shared childhood, who would drive their tutors to distraction by questions that had no easy answer.
Maedhros cast down his eyes. “It would go against the Oath. I ask your pardon, my king. I cannot answer your question.”
“That flash of anger I saw in your eye says otherwise. No law or love, indeed, would gainsay Fëanor’s brood.”
“Oh. So this was a test that I failed.”
Fingon looked into his eyes and smiled. “It was hypothetical, Maitimo. I will be dead long before you have a Silmaril in your hand. No, don’t say it. You know I have no prophetic powers. It is merely logic, that’s all.”
“I miss the times when you were an imprudent child. You as a world-weary king is a sad sight indeed.”
“I am what you made me, love.”
