media literacy would automatically go up 100% if people knew how to consume stories without self-inserting themselves into the characters' shoes. "if i were him..." you're NOT. you may relate to his story, his past, his traits, his quirks, his identity but the moment you start treating the story accepting what you feel/think as what the character feels/thinks, you're misunderstanding the story.

ik people get very upset about the forgotten scarf plot in this fandom (writing this because i just remembered it existed) but i think the extent of it actually worked so well to show how much marinette truly doesn't do good things to get something in exchange, you know? I guess alya explicitly said that she had a good heart for letting adrien belive it was a present from his father in the episode; but what actually shows how much she cares more about other peoples happiness, regarless of being rewarded for it or not, is the fact that Adrien indeed never found out. It's been seasons, not a single word of mention ever came from marinette after this episode regarding it because there is really no spite. And I know that for them it is less time than for us, but plots like this in other shows would have a very satisfactory resolution very quickly, it's kind of beautiful how here there isn't. For her, this is the satisfactory resolution
And I'm not questioning if letting go was the right way do deal with it or not (since she was the one who made it and adrien deserves to know the truth about his father's lack of care). my point is that it is second nature for marinette to always work on doing what she thinks is best for others, regardless of being rewarded for it. She knew she worked so hard on the scarf but because the main purpose was to make him happy, and it did, then the work was done. The work was done even if he didn't get the chance to compliment her or say thank you for it AND THATS WHY she is ladybug.
Going further on this, it's crazy how the scarf plot actually foreshadows her choice to not tell Adrien the truth about pretty much everything at the end of season 5, because of how extremelly depressed it would make him. and i think this utopian situation they are now living can make her finally start to question how much protection and sacrifice for people's happiness is actually worth reality (or even if it is really her job to maintain that illusion) if it is "the right thing to do", when is it actually good for them instead of their right to know the truth

people on tiktok talking about which character they think of when "man in the mirror" comes up, and what if i said marinette dupain-cheng after the breakup? after adrien finds out about all of her lies and many other ways she got in the way of the truth, after all of her attempts to keep everything together fall apart in the most unforgivable way. the failed savior waking up everyday, taking one step at a time, trying to win the trust of the most important person in her life again while also trying to do her own thing, give him space, looking at life through clearer lenses for the first time in ages and, man, you know it's going to take a while
