crazy how the treatment of the tranquil is blamed on the mages so often in dai. it's always their fault for being uncomfortable with them or not protecting them well enough but when we actually get into the fact that tranquility isn't always used as a last resort it's a necessary sacrifice. personally i'd also have very complicated feelings while taking care of lobotomised friends and family who also serve as reminders of what the people who kept/keep me locked in a tower would do to me if i stepped out of line.

It’s been a rough time to be a Solas hater. His last-minute romance in Inquisition is very popular, and even if you didn’t slip him Fade tongue, his status as the games’ new big bad means that every pre-game interview about Veilguard was very Solas-centric. Whether or not the game would make good on the promise of Solas as a character was a huge topic of discussion, and whether or not it did is a current matter of debate. However, what is it exactly that Solas’s writing promised? The narrative issues with Veilguard have been spoken about at length, but I haven’t seen anyone address the state that Inquisition left the franchise in, and especially how so many of these issues center around lore reveals and writing choices made in relation to one character. In short: in this essay, I want to argue that it is, in fact, Solas’s fault.

Do you know if Jennifer Hepler actually said she based Anders on her bipolar ex, or is that just a rumour?

I’m pretty sure that comes from this tweet, where when asked what is something personal about her life she put in her writing, she said Anders was about “the actual caregiver experience of loving someone with mental illness.”

Additionally, on the now dead forms, she said the following:

“Obviously, in a fantasy setting the real world metaphors will never be exact, but I certainly always thought of Anders as being essentially bipolar and I tried to use as much real world psychology as I could (giving away of personal possessions before planning to commit suicide, etc.). I think his romance captures a lot of the joy and pain of dating someone bipolar – he feels everything in a big way, so his love is huge and all-encompassing, as are his hates, including his self-loathing. It takes work to maintain a relationship with him, and ultimately, Hawke has to decide if it’s worth it, knowing that these are burdens that will always haunt them.As far as friendship and rivalry, to me, the friendship path is about supporting Anders in his decisions, both to merge with Justice and everything that stems from that. Therefore, he is generally happier (more manic), and more convinced of his delusions, but is arguably a worse person (more willing to do bad things). The rivalry path is about making him see the error of his ways, so he ends up suffering more and tending more to the depressive side, but is arguably a better person who wants to make up for what he’s done. Which is the “right” way is very much up to the individual player.”
