Stephan Crump's Rhombal ”bristles with the unexpected and the lively” - ****Downbeat The two-horn, bass and drums quartet celebrates the double vinyl LP release of their first recording, Rhombal, around a body of work written for Crump’s late brother Ellery Eskelin - tenor saxophone Adam O'Farrill – trumpet Tyshawn Sorey - drums Stephan Crump – acoustic bass/compositions Rhombal features veteran explorer Ellery Eskelin on tenor saxophone engaging with brilliant young trumpeter Adam O’Farrill in the midst of the deep rhythm team chemistry Crump and Sorey have formed in collaboration for over a decade, primarily in Vijay Iyer’s ensembles. For this performance, the quartet explores pieces from Rhombal, in addition to new works in development. Memphis-bred, Grammy-nominated bassist/composer Stephan Crump has lived in Brooklyn since 1994. As a longtime collaborator with adventurous jazz composers (since 1999 with Vijay Iyer) as well as guitar visionary Mary Halvorson and singer-songwriter Jen Chapin, he has become known for the elegance and purposeful groove of his acoustic and electric bass playing, and for transforming his instrument into a speaking entity with magnetic pull. As a composer, he is emerging as a singular voice. His music can be heard in numerous films and on his ten critically acclaimed albums as leader. Tickets: $20 in advance/$23 at door/$10 full-time students with ID
