He calls, but there’s no answer. The only way Nathaniel can get his magic back is to open himself completely to another. But with his father still hunting for him, that doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon.

Then again, Nathaniel’s used to being the underdog.

The guy who the bag belongs to looks to be around Neil’s age, maybe a little older. But now that Neil’s close enough to get a better look, he’s clearly exhausted; there’s dark shadows under his eyes that imply a few nights of poor sleep. His blond hair is mussed on one side like he’s been running a hand through it, and he’s dressed all in black; long-sleeved black t-shirt, black torn jeans, black combat boots. He also has a black hoodie which he’s balled up and is using as a pillow against the back of his chair. His arms are crossed, and he looks…not quite pissed off, but there’s certainly something unapproachable about him.

And yet he’s watching Neil, unblinking, unsmiling, almost like he’s silently daring him to speak.

���Can I sit there?” Neil points at the chair.

The guy looks from Neil to the chair and back again, then he shrugs. “I dunno. Can you?”

Neil rolls his eyes mightily, picks up the bag and deposits it on the floor before taking a seat. “I guess I can.”

This is set in a high school au that I occasionally write. In this au Neil is a senior at Andrew’s old high school in Columbia. Andrew and Neil meet at a car wash fundraiser so I’ve dubbed this au the Car Wash AU aka It’s Always You. At the time that this story takes place Andrew and Neil have been dating for about six months.

But Neil was never like Andrew, he reveled in the way words could be weaponized or anchor him to a life he never thought was possible. Words held a certain power for Neil which is why when he whispers the words in Andrew’s ear, he shuts down. Because Andrew doesn’t think he could ever say them back. And if he can’t, how long will it be before Neil leaves him for someone who can?

AFTG Remix 2019

It’s back! Have you ever read a fic and thought about how you would have written it differently? Maybe from another POV? Or just mixed things up a little? Here’s your chance!

What is a remix?

Like a gift exchange, a remix matches you with another writer from the fandom. Only in this case you get to dive into their already published fics and come up with your own version. The works will be published anonymously on AO3 for a week before authors are revealed.

What is required?

You are signing up to produce and receive a remix fic between 1500 and 5000 words. You must have at least three eligible fics of between 1500 and 5000 words so there are choices for whoever gets assigned to remix your work.

The funniest part is, or at least the part that feels the funniest right now, is that the night before everything got smashed to pieces, they had been watching ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’. Andrew had thought it was ridiculous. Neil had tried to laugh too, but the action stuck in his throat instead. 

Now, he just twists at the ring, shifting it from finger to finger. It was always going to happen, eventually. Nothing good ever stays, Nathaniel. Nothing good.

“I don’t need your help,” Neil huffs, straining on his tiptoes, arms stretched as far as possible. His body is pressed flush against the Maserati but he still can’t reach the center of the car’s roof.

Andrew watches with amusement as Neil flails, trying to scrub the top of the car with the soapy sponge in his right hand. Whether he means to or not – and knowing Neil it’s definitely not intentional – he’s putting on a good show.
