Dome House, Bognor Regis. 20 May 2024.
Grade 1 listed Dome House, rather unimaginatively named, is the centre-piece of Hothamton Crescent built in the 1790's, Sir Richard was confident, with these fine residences, he could attract Royalty away from Brighton and Weymouth as the fashionable place to take a dip.

Greenwich 26 August 2024
The Royal Naval Hospital (now College) sketched from the Thames Wall, with The Queen's House glimpsed against the wooded Blackheath backdrop. The Hospital is Christopher Wren's 1690's vision with Nicholas Hawksmoor his architectural assistant. I am struck by the use of foundations of an earlier building in the structure of the Painted Hall. The Queen's House designed by Inigo Jones for James 1 's wife in the 1620's strangely built over the then main London /Dover road is the earliest English Renaissance building. I don't feel well as it is oppressive.

At Dell Quay, Chichester Harbour. 27 June 2024
The last Friday of the month finds 4 of the Sussex Ancients sketching group " en plein air". The ancient gnarled waterside trees provide my subject along with a colleague . The others sketch picturesque hulks beached on the mud. We retire to the quayside pub terrace which at he turn of the tide becomes uncomfortably windy.

Hotham Park, Bognor Regis. 13 July 2024
Sir Richard Hotham was a hatter and built Merton Place, Surrey home to Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton. In 1784 he bought land at the fishing village of Bognor to develop a seaside resort to challenge Brighton. He built Hotham Park House as his home. William and Agnes Fletcher in 1900 developed the grounds planting the magnificent trees . The Park and Esplanade are the prime assets of our raffish town . The House has been sensitively converted into private apartments, but the loss of the first floor verandah canopy and the Chapel is regrettable.

Blackpool 24 September 2024
The weather had broken after a week of warm sunshine. We spend 2 nights at the Imperial Hotel which is grand . There are 3 piers. I sketch sitting on the North Pier . Access to The Tower is overpriced. we enjoy the Comedy Museum. as evening approaches we take the tram north to Fleetwood and back to witness Blackpool's Illuminations.. One street back from the lively Promenade we are shocked by the dereliction and uncertainty of identity.

Llandudno. 21 September 2024
This is the Grand Hotel and Pier at the western end of the sweeping promenade with the backdrop of the Great Orme. The Grand is trying to live up to its name but the half board dinner was awful , then there was the Abba tribute show . i paid an extra £ 20 for a sea view room but use of the balcony was forbidden during renovation. Llandudno was my favourite resort on our pier tour, Wetherspoon have brilliantly taken over the Palladium Theatre. The town is consistently pleasant unlike many which have gaps in the fabric and boarded uindows.

The Danube at Nikopol, Bulgaria. 11 April 2024
The town with its riverside park and hilltop war memorial viewpoint faces this industrial complex on the Romanian bank. While Nikopol has little touristic charm it doesn't deserve this backside affront . Teams of women are brushing the roads as I explore. The centre has showy modern forlorn commercial buildings with faded indoor carpet on the entrance steps. Nikopol's fort was the site of a famous episode in the Russo/Turkish War in 1877. A winding path leads up 200 steps to the Memorial past a brick basilica and simple houses. The towns post office is a secret at the end of a goose chase .

Liberty Bridge, Budapest 6 April 2024.
We are moored on the Pest bank of the Danube looking across towards historically more fashionable Buda. Out of view to the right is the hilltop Communist era statue of Liberty carrying a flag above her head.

Brandenburg Gate, Berlin. 18 June 2024
My last day I breakfast and check out of the Air In Berlin Hotel take the U-Bahn to Potsdamer Platz and walk to the Euros Football Fanzone in the Tiergarten then sketch this most famous landmark . After I walk up the Unter Den Linden and am impressed by the Russian Embassy where the pavement is closed I finish up exhausted having lunch with a Warsteiner back at Wittenberg Platz.

Belgrade, Serbia. 9 April 2024
The 3rd day of our Danube cruise. Here there is a generous riverside quay with a backdrop of neo-classical buildings up the slope to the city centre , where there are some ruins from the 1990's allied bombing . a bus tour takes us via Tito's attractive Glass House and the huge St Sava Church . A vivacious local troupe of dancers and musicians entertain us after dinner.

Braila, Romania. 13 April 2024
A handsome town and port of 154.000 population on the Danube. There is the usual East European 3 stage problem of finding a postcard , buying a postage stamp and locating a postbox. I sketch in the central square with the Maria Filotti Theatre. I buy a leather jacket.

Butlins Bognor Regis 2024
The seaside holiday complex turns its back on the beach with a car park and security fence . My plan links the tensile structure concourse through to a sea view terrace with access to the promenade flanked by stepped proflle apartments built over the car parking. Butlins don't respond.

Vukovar, Croatia. 8 April 2024
The first stop on our Danube Cruise. This town had been under siege during the 1990's " Homeland War" break up of Yugoslavia. Saint Nicholas Church is featured in this view , with on the left the rebuilt facade of the oldest house in the town. Elsewhere the shell damaged concrete water tower is retained as a monument and the hilltop Monastery has been faithfully restored . The town centre is cheerful and busy but overshadowed by a derelict 1980's hotel bought for a negligible sum and stripped of its windows. That evening back on board Sarah wins the Yes /No party game.
