Arts Scholars 2016:My Capstone Project
My name is Andrew, and I am an Arts Scholar of the University of Maryland. Follow me as I take on my biggest performing arts project yet! I have been tasked this year by my student organization, the Filipino Cultural Association, with directing our yearly play, performed in our annual Philippine Cultural Night. Here, you will find my process and updates as I bring this show to life for my Arts Scholars Capstone Project!

Challenges
My biggest challenge with this project is honestly probably keeping my mental cool. On a personal note, I have been known to break down in the past when under high stress in a social setting, due to my social anxiety, and for this project, I will be doing a lot of group work. This group work ranges from meeting regularly with my co-director, being a leader for the actors and stage hands, and keeping touch with the executive board of FCA, who are responsible for making PCN an event. Clearly, there is a lot of social pressure here, but I believe that I have grown enough to overcome these triggers of anxiety, and I will also continue growing in the process.

My Process
I define my process as the things I focus on as I make progress on a project that are equally as important to said project as the product itself. In the past, I’ve found it helpful to set a timeline for myself to complete certain tasks by certain dates so that I keep myself on track with an assignment. For this capstone project, I want to experiment with my leadership capabilities. When people think of art projects, they typically imagine the work carried out by the performer, or the painter, or the photographer; seldom do people give much thought to the ones who organize and put such presentations together, and this is what I will be trying for the first time in my capstone project. As I will be directing a performance, I hope to experiment not with being the one acting onstage or singing in the pre-show but with getting all the actors together, making sure they know their lines, managing the stage crew, and seeing to it that my vision for the play comes to fruition with the resources I have.
