CPSA 250: Individual Capstone Research Practicum Learning Agreement
Name: Sarah Kim
Advisor: Harold Burgess
Weekly Meeting Time: Wednesdays 5:00-5:50 PM
Purpose/Mission Statement: Put this in the form of a few sentences about what you hope to accomplish this semester. What will the end result of your project be? What will you learn or gain from the experience? Do you have other goals?
My goal for this project is to prepare and perform a Sophomore Violin Recital.  After this project, I would have learned how navigate the recital booking software for the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, three new complete pieces, how to collaborate with fellow music colleagues in the recital preparation process, and how to order catering for an estimated audience size.  Finally, by receiving feedback from important music faculty and music major colleagues, I would have the opportunity to learn the mistakes from this experience, and to ultimately better my performance energy for future recitals.
Learning Objectives:
These are more specific than the mission statement. Be sure your objectives are clearly stated and respond to what you expect to do, learn, and experience as a result this project. Please list at least three. These should scaffold toward your final project.
I will reserve the Leah Smith Recital and Lecture Hall for the performance and the Student Lounge for the reception.
I will plan a recital program in consultation with my private teacher, Dr. Stern, and my capstone faculty advisor, Harold Burgess.
I will learn the following three new pieces:
Johann Sebastian Bach Sonata no. 1 in g minor
Jean Sibelius Violin Concerto
Josef Suk 4 Pieces for Violin and Piano.
I will prepare a 30 minute reception taking place after the recital, with light refreshments.
Workshop Process:
How will you complete the project? What research or preliminary work is required? What materials will you need? What steps will you take to create the finished project? How will you perform or present your work?
How will you document your work and research in your process binder/notebook?
I will complete this project over a span of three months, January through March, in order to appropriately prepare the repertoire and organize the logistics of the concert.  The preliminary work of booking the recital hall and reception area, as well as the planning of repertoire was completed before the start of the new year to ensure maximum time for solely music practice and preparation.  In order to finish the project, I plan to prepare the assigned repertoire, perform the recital, and hold the post-performance reception.  This project will be performed on April 5th at 7:30 PM in Leah Smith Hall.
I will document my work and research in my process binder by posting audio and video clips on my Tumblr page.  These clips will show the gradual evolution of the music preparation process, from sight-reading the music to the final performance.
Resources:
Please include a list of resources you have used/may use in the planning and execution of your project. You may include books, websites, music, video, personal communication, etc.
Repertoire Recordings:
Josef Suk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhbzZ5Y7yXs

Advising Meeting 1
I don’t know how to attach a document for Tumblr.
CPSA250:                   Conference Report
Fill this form out in its entirety & submit it via email to all three of the Arts Scholars faculty (Harold, Bimbola and Montse) within 48 hours of your conference. Copy this information over to your Scholars Tumblr site as well (tagged as CPSA Capstone Advising). Failure to submit this form on time will result in losing half the points for the meeting process!
NAME: Michelle Chan
ADVISOR: Montse
MEETING DATE & TIME: Thursday 2/8/18 4:10pm
In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting.
We discussed the timeline, for which she advised me to confirm it with my partner, Lily Huang, to keep in mind weekends and life in general. She recommended dividing the animation by characters rather than by scenes, or to make the initial roughs more detailed so we both have the same idea and the animation doesn’t have illogical jumps between scenes. Then, I tried to describe my story and she advised making it simpler and following a narrative of want, so, but, action.
In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be.
My next step was discussing the timeline and story with my partner so that we are both on track and each part is clear and included in the timeline. We revised the story so the complicated details are not included. After that is finishing the storyboard drafts and including more details in them so Lily and I can know what the action and its purpose is. I’ll be brainstorming ideas for the main theme of the “beginning of the adventure” story.
Please use the space below to indicate any further questions, concerns, or confusions that were NOT addressed during the meeting.
Should all posts that fall under the “Complete Process Binder” assignment’s description of “showing your progress and process as fully as possible” have the tag “CPSA Capstone Journal” or should they be untagged in the Process Binder Tumblr page?
I’m also wondering if it’s ok if I don’t have a central theme?

Through a set of group art activities I will prove that art therapy can reduce the stressof college students. I aim to learn which methods work the best for lowering the amount of stressthat college students feel. My goal for the end of the semester is to help find a copingmechanism that lowers the stress and anxiety of everyone that volunteers for my study. Learning Objectives: 1. I will learn how to hold group art therapy sessions that is a mixture of learning arttechniques and coping mechanisms to lower stress. 2. I will hold hour long group art therapy session each week that aims to lower the stressof the volunteers who participate. 3. I will present and analyze my data in hopes of concluding that my hypothesis iscorrect. Workshop Process:I will get together a group of about 10 student volunteers by writing an email and havingit sent to all art scholars in search of willing participants. To come in each week to a designatedroom. Half of them will participate in art therapy sessions while others will not. We will starteach session by having all the volunteers fill out a survey on how they are feeling and what theirlevel of stress and anxiety is based on a predetermined scale. Volunteers that are not in the arttheory session group will leave after they filled out the first survey. We will start our paintingsession by quickly paint what is causing use stress that week. Then I will present our art activityfor the week and guide them through group discussion while we work on our art. For our art wewill use unconventional methods to paint and express how we are feeling onto paper. After thepainting session, the volunteers that choose to will show the group what they have painted, thenall the volunteers will fill out the same survey they did before. The finished project will be me presenting the data I have gathered through the surveys and myanalysis of my findings. Then paintings from the first day and last day will be on display alongwith a final group project will be presented for people to see. Each volunteer will be given a number and when they take a survey or paint a picture they willwrite their number on their paper. All the surveys and paintings will be put up on my tumblrprocess binder each week with only their numbers written on them to keep their answers safe.Pictures of our group sessions will also be available. An agreement stating my expectations frommyself and all participants in my study. This will need to me signed by all volunteers or they willnot be able to participate. Materials: Skin friendly paint, 22 x 28 finger painting paper, plastic cups, paper towels. Resources:http://faculty.weber.edu/molpin/healthclasses/1110/bookchapters/selfassessmentchapter.htm Questions for the survey .0- never 1 - almost never 2 - sometimes 3 - fairly often 4 - very often____ 1. Project Timeline: 2/17/17 Find all volunteers 2/19/17 Establish best place and time to meet and meet that week 2/19/17 Paint a self portrait 2/26/17 Paint the last dream you had 3/1/17 First look presentation 3/5/17 Paint the best and worse memory you have 3/12/17 Paint your worse fear 3/19/17 Paint what you love the most 3/24/17 Digital show case poster due 3/26/17 Paint your partner 4/2/17 Paint something you are looking forward to (start turning in paintings) 4/9/17 Paint your favorite part of the semester (last day) (last day to collect paintings) 4/12/17 Second look presentations 4/16/17 Poster Prep time 4//21/17 Showcase posters due 4/29/17 ArtsFest 5/4/17 Academic Show case Revised Capstone: I changed my assignment so that instead of have test subjects I would be my one and only test subject. All the assignments and the timeline will be the same except it will just be me participating. I'll give myself 30 min once a week to complete each assignment. I wanted to do my original idea because I believed that hold session wouldbe more interesting and also give me better data so that I could turn thisinto actual research but the inevitable possibility of people not being ableto make it to every single session would ruin my data so I decided to do itmyself.

Final Reflection
CPSA 250:      Individual Capstone
1) Staying consistent and scheduling were the most difficult aspects of my capstone. I struggled to meet the dates I set for my self to paint, because of other engagements (e.g. major courses, assignments, etc). I also found that I needed to change the composition of my pieces (three times total for each). For one of the pieces, Living Room, I completely removed a central figure in favor of a shoulder-up self-portrait, which altered the meaning of the painting and required more time to complete it. While these changes were stressful, they also allowed the paintings to evolve in tandem with my own personal growth and interests.
 2) In retrospect, I did not focus nearly as much on my childhood visual influences as I had hoped to initially. I think that I naturally gravitated to new sources of artistic materials, because these paintings required new technical perspectives. My childhood became one of the central focuses, as opposed to technique, which was originally what I had planned to be the main focus. I also did not update my process binder/tumblr as frequently as I had initially described in my learning objectives. The objectives I did fulfill are as follows: two 2ftx3ft paintings completed, background research completed, growth and healing, and the collection of various materials/artistic works.
 3) The weekly class meetings were helpful in that they provided more in depth information on the requirements for each assignment/capstone. I also appreciated hearing feed back on my capstone progress, as well as seeing the progress and process of my peers. Classes served as a reminder for assignments that were coming up (which is good for forgetful and scattered people like myself). For next year, it might be more helpful if Art Scholars reduced the use of tumblr. Its interface is confusing and not very efficient.
 4) My project is proof that I am capable of taking on long-term challenges, which was something I doubted about myself in the past. It required that I put in hours that I usually try to avoid. I am also satisfied with how I reacted to overcoming this particular obstacle. Instead of dismissing it, because it does not hold up against other projects or whatever other reason, I did not forgot the amount of effort I put into my project.
 5) They say hindsight is 50/50, and that is certainly true. If I had the opportunity to do something similar to this project, I would spend more time in the planning stage and take time to reflect on and document the project more closely. I feel that reflecting on and documenting my progress would have eliminated many of the problems that I came across. For example, perhaps I would not have had to change my composition so many times, or I might have been able to narrow my focus earlier in the process.
 6) My advice to upcoming students is the same as the students’ advice that came before me: start early and follow through on specific goals you set for yourself. By starting earlier, you have more time to fix problems and change the course of what your project is, if you feel that is necessary. Specific goals are essential because they hold you accountable for the progress of your project. It is easy to say you will have a certain part done by ‘around April-ish,’ but that is hardly helpful when April 30th rolls around, and you have not finished what you needed to get done.

CPSA 250: Individual Capstone Final Reflection Christina Devine 1) What was the most challenging aspect of completing your project, and why? (This might be technical aspects, time constraints, problems that arose, etc.—be honest, this is your space to reflect!) In complete honesty, the most difficult aspect of my project was the actual sewing. I can pin, I can do a straight stitch, I can work a sewing machine, but working with satin and trying to figure out how to overcast, or serge without a serger was very difficult. Putting together pieces of cloth in the shape of a garment trying to figure out how to lay things out, which order to sew everything, it was very difficult. I realized, although I may be able to sew a piece together, I have some things to learn before my pieces are really wearable. I even sewed the wrong sides together once and had to seam rip! 2) Looking at your learning agreement(s) on ELMS, how do you think you succeeded (or not) in completing your Learning Objectives? Which ones did you fulfill? Which ones did you not fulfill? Why? My project has changed a bit since my final learning agreement, these changes can be seen via a tumblr post that updates my project. I hit many of my goals, but not all of them. Some of my week-to-week goals changed as I realized some projects were harder than others and as I scrapped a few of my pieces. Some items I started to make ended up not making it to the final line up because they were not up to the standard I wanted and knew they could be. I pushed back a lot of my goals and since my project changed from complete looks to pieces I was able to still fit in everything I wanted and meet the important due date: ArtsFest! 3) What were the most helpful aspects of the (semi) weekly class meetings? What would you like to see added or subtracted for next year? I think the weekly sessions were helpful to catch up on important information and stay up to date on our peers assignments. I think the amount of class meetings was appropriate, not holding class some weeks allowed me to dedicate my wednesdays to sewing, sketching, or hunting for material. It is possible we could have used a day or two more with no in-class meetings, but in reality the amount of meetings was probably necessary. The tumblr assignment was really neat to see others projects and streams, but the timing made it sort of awkward because you had to wait for others to post in order to respond and really complete the assignment. Overall, I think the class was helpful to talk about our projects and important dates and assignments coming up, but it would be helpful to possibly have one more “working day” for students to work on their projects. 4) What part of the project were you most proud of? Why? I was most proud of my satin set and my blue lightning bolt jacket. I am proud of the jacket because it is the most wearable item and is also very representative of the collection. I was able to incorporate the help of my friend who is an artist on the bolt and have fun with patches, something I find really cool. I loved the stin set because it was really difficult and I am just proud it is finished and that I could even wear it. I love the way the dark grey satin on satin looks and styling the look was so much fun for the lookbook. 5) What part of the project would you have changed if you could? Why? I probably would have changed where I went to get fabrics. I would have loved to have gone to Mood Fabrics in New York again. G Street was nice but it did not have nearly the same quality and quantity in their selection. It also would have been so great to go to New York City again I have not been since the summer and I love going. It would have been so nice to do this but it just did not work out due to timing and schedules. It did not make a huge difference since I ended up making half of my items from thrifted pieces, but it still would have been great to see a larger quantity and have a better selection. 6) If you had to offer advice to next year’s Capstone students, what would it be? The advice I shared with the first years I spoke with at ArtsFest and Academic Showcase, as well as in general or in Workshop, was “pick something you're passionate about and make it manageable.” I think this is so important for two reasons. For one, you should produce a project that makes you smile and makes you proud. After two years in a program it is important to create an end project that you have fun doing and represents you. On the other hand, do not get carried away with this and make your project unmanageable. This can overwhelm you and take away from how great your project and this experience is.

Reflection
Something that I’ve struggled with before writing the lit review and during the draft process is, just allowing myself to write terrible material. I tend to overthink things and I want every single sentence to sound perfect, which actually makes me take forever to write anything down or finish the process. Although, I’ve been struggling with this, it helps to know that my draft is just a draft and probably won’t see the light of day, so it’s very okay if I make mistakes.

Over spring break I had completed the second board in the series that focused on police brutality, and specifically Black lives who have been taken by the police. I finished it, but it got messed up because the glue was still wet & fur got on it. SO I’m restarting on a new board, and this is the beginning. I’m attempting to get it done by the end of this week, while I work on the third piece as well.

“Two Trains” by Tony Hoagland
Then there was that song called “Two Trains Running,”
A Mississippi blues they play on late-night radio,
that program after midnight called FM in the AM,
–well, I always thought it was about trains.
Then somebody told me it was about what a man and woman do
under the covers of their bed, moving back and forth
like slow pistons in a shiny black locomotive,
the rods and valves trying to stay coordinated
long enough that they will “get to the station”
at the same time. And one of the trains
goes out of sight into the mountain tunnel,
but when they break back into the light
the other train has somehow pulled ahead,
the two trains running like that, side by side,
first one and then the other, with the fierce white
bursts of smoke puffing from their stacks,
into a sky so sharp and blue you want to die.
So then for a long time I thought the song was about sex.
But then Mack told me that all train songs
are really about Jesus, about how the second train
is shadowing the first, so He walks in your footsteps
and He watches you from behind, He is running with you,
He is your brakeman and your engineer,
your coolant and your coal,
and He will catch you when you fall,
and when you stall He will push you through
the darkest mountain valley, up the steepest hill,
and the rough chuff chuff of his fingers on the washboard
and the harmonica woo woo is the long soul cry by which He
pulls you through the bloody tunnel of the world.
So then I thought the two trains song was a gospel song.
Then I quit my job in Santa Fe and Sharon drove
her spike heel through my heart
and I got twelve years older and Dean moved away,
and now I think the song might be about good-byes–
because we are not even in the same time zone,
or moving at the same speed, or perhaps even
headed toward the same destination–
forgodsakes, we are not even trains!
What grief it is to love some people like your own
blood, and then to see them simply disappear;
to feel time bearing us away
one boxcar at a time.
And sometimes, sitting in my chair
I can feel the absence stretching out in all directions–
like the deaf, defoliated silence
just after a train has thundered past the platform,
just before the mindless birds begin to chirp again
–and the wildflowers that grow beside the tracks
wobble wildly on their little stems,
then gradually grow still and stand
motherless and vertical in the middle of everything.
~
This is a poem we discussed in my Poetry class. I absolutely adore it.

Spent the afternoon sitting in the Denton quad painting. The wind was ferocious and swept plates all over the place like frisbees flying in the wind. The weekend was spent doing pencil sketches of the plate illustrations. I learned that as soon as the pencil marks were coated with watercolor, they could no longer be erased. The watercolor itself was not thick and opaque enough to conceal the pencil markings. I imagine I might resketch the drawings onto paper to use as a reference while painting. Here’s the afternoon’s work.

For the subject of my next piece, I’ve switched from the manatee to the African elephant! I’d like to experiment with a more illustrative style for this painting, maybe do some research into tattoo art for a cool style?

This photo indicates my choice of costume for my Capstone Project:  I chose to wear all black (leotard/skirt).  The first reason I selected all black is because my research shows that infants are actually drawn to colors of contrast.  It is a misconception that babies love the pale blue/pink that are gendered for newborns.  In fact, babies are more engaged to the contrast of black/white.  Also, wearing all black was a way to represent multiple characters of the story.  Additionally, it prevented unnecessary distraction of an elaborate costume.  I chose a skirt because I felt its fluidity replicated that of the movement in order to enhance the quality of the tone of the choreography, and the emotion in the storybook.

Advising meeting 1
CPSA250:Conference Report Fill this form out in its entirety & submit it via email to all three of the Arts Scholars faculty (Jess, Harold, and Kenna) within 48 hours of your conference (i.e. if you met with Jess at 2 PM Wednesday, your report is due by 2 PM Friday). Copy this information over to your Scholars Tumblr site as well (tagged as CPSA Capstone Advising). Failure to submit this form on time will result in losing half the points for the meeting process! NAME: Daniela Salem ADVISOR: Kenna MEETING DATE & TIME: Feb 13 11:30 In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting. We discussed how I was going to execute my research. Kenna suggested that I make my sample size smaller so instead of having ten people in the experiments group and ten people in the control group, have ten people total. Also that a group discussion may not be the best because it stuff could be too personal. Also sending out a email to art scholars looking for possible recruits. In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be. Write an email so Kenna can send it out to get possible participants for my research. Obtain supplies, possibly using the stuff that is left over in the art supply room. Finalizing my art assignments for each week. Please use the space below to indicate any further questions, concerns, or confusions that were NOT addressed during the meeting.

Challenges
My biggest challenge with this project is honestly probably keeping my mental cool. On a personal note, I have been known to break down in the past when under high stress in a social setting, due to my social anxiety, and for this project, I will be doing a lot of group work. This group work ranges from meeting regularly with my co-director, being a leader for the actors and stage hands, and keeping touch with the executive board of FCA, who are responsible for making PCN an event. Clearly, there is a lot of social pressure here, but I believe that I have grown enough to overcome these triggers of anxiety, and I will also continue growing in the process.

Here is my flip book rendition of Michelangelo's David. He will be shown throughout the flip book against the Fibonacci spiral and it will show the mathematical proportions of his body. His face is not perfect; however, this is a minor detail that I will fix as I continue drawing the flip book.

Another sample...
As the project working season is drawing to its end, I have begun reflecting on this entire process. What I can assemble so far is that unoriginally, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” However, is that to say that a picture can stand alone without words? In the development of this unwritten storybook, I have failed to exclude words from the illustrating portion. Since the established construct for writing a book would seem to be ideas to words and words to illustrations. Is it possible to create something in the absence of words from the product but also the PROCESS?
