          she laughs, sticking her tongue out at wendla and wiggling her eyebrows exaggeratedly. what KIND of friend would anna be if she didn’t tease her friends about their maybe probably crushes? ‘ a very very good friend? ’ she giggles, throwing in a couple more eyebrow wiggles shaking her head. ‘ okay, i’ll stop. for now. ’ she signs, a teasing grin pulling at her lips. 

          she purses her lips, nodding empathetically as she quickly signs her reply, . ‘ right? like, he’s a nice guy, but sometimes he just gives me kinda weird vibes. ’ cocking her head to the side, she furrows her brows in thought. ‘ so is hanschen, though. honestly, i don’t know who i’d pick. probably hanschen, but you never know what’s going to happen with him. ’

         her  cheeks turn a DEEP rose. batting her hand at anna is if to convey that was she not very comfortable in her sleeping bag she’d be hitting her right now.   ‘ he’s  a very good friend, anna, that’s ALL. ‘    she grins, shoving the thought from her mind with a calm swiftness. she wasn’t old enough to know what LOVE felt like, even if perhaps thea & anna knew they felt it. crushes didn’t have to be love – they didn’t even have to be romantic, did they?

        ‘ oh NO ! ‘   she signs, turning to martha as if looking for REPRIEVE. she taps her lip, humming her horrid thoughts.   ‘ if  I had to, hanschen I guess. he’s crass sometimes, but georg can be creepy, ‘  she GIGGLES, an honest friendly love for them both, yet, not quite so much that she can’t poke some not-so-untrue fun at them on her own time.

          ‘ he is— pretty remarkable, yes. ’ she grins at wendla, nudging the other girl in the arm. ‘ you seem to like him more than i do, though, but i don’t mind. ’ she giggles, signing quickly as if she were revealing a secret, a teasing smile pulling at her lips. ‘ don’t let thea know— we all know how SHE feels about melchior. ’ she giggles again, before pursing her lips in thought, now tasked with coming up with a question. 

          ‘ okay, um— would you rather be handcuffed for an hour to georg, or hanschen? ’

      ‘ I  don’t know, but I guess I’d pick him too. have you HEARD how he talks? it’s like nothing else, like poetry. ‘     she blushes a bit, turning back to her flashlight and pressing the button until it glows purple ( one of her favorite things about it ). camp had given her the chance to see him more, listen to him go on & on about the systems and their flaws. truthfully, she didn’t understand it all, but she was glad to have someone who actually BELIEVED in her intellect. maybe that’s what a crush was, as thea had been saying, maybe not though.

       she   snaps back. a game, right, they were playing a game.   ‘ anyway,  your turn, anna! ‘

          oh, god. anna bites her lip in thought, fingers tapping gently on her chin.  “ah—” she speaks out loud, the sound of her voice breaking the silence startling her for a moment. she shrugs it off, focusing her attention back on the question. ‘ melchior, i guess? he is rather handsome, don’t you think? ’

        the  little battery clock she’d brought glows 11:47pm, she’s laying on her side, facing out of her own bunk enough to sign with martha and anna. her fits of giggles seem only to increase as the night rolls on filled with all the childish games & camp traditions.    ‘ okay, anna, would you RATHER — kiss melchior or hanschen? ‘
