You felt a sense of déjà vu as rested rather pointlessly on the bed Elijah Kamski strongly insisted you take after your incident. You couldn’t remember much of what happened but knew it definitely wasn’t pretty. While you stared blankly and silently at the ceiling high above your head, you tried to ignore the burning gaze of your soulmate as he sat on a chair placed by your bedside.

A while back your positions had been switched after he took a bullet for you like an idiot.

Just recalling the past few months you’d spent with him made your heart race like mad but no matter how much you wanted to, you didn’t allow yourself to look at him. Not after he’d done nothing when his... whatever she was, treat you like dirt right in front of him—

“Are you gonna say anything?” He suddenly spoke. His harsh tone made your heart jump as your body jerked in mild shock. You knew he saw you react but yet you kept your eyes looking straight ahead as you observed him through your peripheral vision. From his tone of voice, you would’ve thought he was angry, but he seemed more lost than anything.

“So we’re just gonna pretend nothing happened, huh?” He spoke bitterly once more, his voice coming off as a lot more venomous than he’d previously intended. David bit his tongue in frustration. Fuck.

A wave of goosebumps invaded your skin as you felt frustration pierce your chest. How dare he?

You parted your lips, ready to give him a piece of your mind when noticed your soulmate straighten up just a tiny bit.

‘Ah, so that’s how this is,’ you thought as you shut your mouth once more and gritted your teeth. You weren’t going to give him what he wanted. You were going to be as childish as he was.

David let out a deep sigh as he leaned back in his chair and stretched out his legs in front of him. It was late and he was tired but he wasn’t going anywhere. Not until you said something.

There was a digital clock on one of the walls of the large room. Captain Allen found himself staring at it as he sat waiting for you to speak. He felt his heart pounding erratically within the confines of his chest, the intensity only growing greater with every minute that passed.

David didn’t know why that was so.

—Every second that he spent sitting on his couch while his ex-girlfriend complained about her disobedient husband, he found himself regretting not going after you. Not only because he greatly preferred your company to hers but also because of the dire consequences of his actions.

Captain Allen rubbed his hand down his face and sighed, the sound of Sierra’s yammering droned on from across him where she sat. He recalled the events that occurred once again; he remembered how your facial expression kept fading between disappointed and angry; he felt every glance you threw his way burn into his skin again.

—“I’m sorry.” Captain Allen spoke once more, this time his voice was softer, more gentle. He sounded not unlike a child who yearned for forgiveness.

Without meaning to, your head whipped to the side so that your eyes ended up meeting.

His tough guy facade was breaking; and, to be honest, it caught you off guard. It was too late to look away and pretend as though nothing happened but yet you didn’t know what to do next so you simply stared.

David could tell most of your anger had dissipated just from your softened gaze and while that was definitely a good thing, he still felt himself shrink under your stare. His heart continued hammering in his chest from both his nerves and... something else that he couldn’t quite put his finger on.

“Tell me about her.” Your words were soft but weighed heavy upon his chest. He hadn’t expected you to speak, and neither did you. The words simply spilt out of your mouth before you could stop yourself.

Your soulmate’s jaw tightened as he straightened himself up in his seat. His eyes tore themselves away from yours only for him to glance down at his feet as he fiddled with his hands thoughtlessly. Even without any scans, you knew that just the mere thought of that woman—Sierra—caused many painful memories to resurface.

David opened his mouth to speak but no words came out. He closed his mouth and then opened it once more before he finally released a sound—a humourless chuckle. His blue eyes met yours again as he released a deep and long sigh.

“It’s a long story—“

They’d met in college.

That was also where they’d fallen in love.

Constantly made a mockery of their mutual friends with soulmate tattoos, they shrugged off comments from the people they knew and didn’t know who told them they wouldn’t last.

Sierra was feisty and fun but also smart and incredibly sexy. She thought the same of him.

“—I...” David paused. He looked down again at his own shoes and from that moment on you knew he wasn’t going to tell you his history with her.—

They both believed that the idea of soulmates was complete bullshit and that they could forge their own destiny. They swore to one another, during a night spent watching the stars, that no matter what, they’d stay with one another; that no soulmate would take either of them away.

That promise was broken the moment Sierra met a lawyer whose first line to her imprinted itself onto her skin.

—You wondered if you would be okay with that; with not knowing who Sierra was to him and what kind of place did she have in his heart.

You thought your soulmate’s heart was supposed to be yours to keep in its entirety but as you watched David Allen struggle to even continue what he wanted to say, you knew that wasn’t true.

^^^^ I’ve grown up reading so much fanfic about the stereotypical skinny white woman with blonde hair reader that I’ve legit gotten used to that being the “default” like I’ve totally given up on even finding fics that could possibly feature asian people bc, y’know, they’re so scarce that it’s hard to find them in certain fandoms. Idk, this was just a smol personal thing!! I legit have nothing against white people okay majority of y’all are fine, you do you but it’ll be nice to see some diversity sprinkled here and there ^^
