the infuriating thing is that there is genuinely so much good queer literature out there, contemporary and not, but there is also a sizeable chunk of readers who think that a book only "counts" as good queer literature if it's a) unproblematic, b) contains romance as its central focus, and c) has the characters state their orientation and/or gender identity directly to the audience using socially acceptable 21st-century terms (as opposed to resorting to cowardly tactics such as Subtext and Themes)

Anatomy of a Good Question

So, I thought I'd come up with some recommendations here, because we are getting some great questions and some really funny questions, but we're also getting some of those kinds of questions that although wanting answers to them are very understandable, they Not Likely to be Answered, so I thought I would make a few suggestions here about what makes a question good.

We are VERY OPEN to other suggestions, and ideas, or even to disagreements with these recommendations! Please feel free to add them in the tags, or send them in as asks or submissions!

So, what makes a good question? These are my ideas:

Open ended: they require more than a single word or 'yes' / 'no' answer, and might allow space for insight and elaboration, allowing for detailed, interesting and thoughtful answers.

Specific to their craft and art: they focus on the actor's /director's process for character development, preparation, and performance, allowing them to talk about how they work, and how they think about their work.

Clearly presented in an accessible way: obviously, our TV boyfriends have not memorized episode titles and numbers and can't remember all that shit for 327 episodes the way our hive mind can. Ask them about specific situations and plot points, not episode numbers and titles.

Inquiry based: aiming to understand an actor's/director's/artist's motivation, creativity, and adaptability to different situations -- let them talk about themselves! Everyone likes to do that!

Concrete and scenario based: It can be easier to answer questions that present a scenario (e.g., a difficult moment, a challenging scene, a particular scene partner) and ask how their skills and their ideas about their character were applied in a specific instance.

Actual inquiries, rather than 'display questions': In other words, genuine questions that you don't know the answer to, not questions that have been asked and answered, or that you already know or worse, wish to elicit a specific response to.

Haven't been asked and answered 1,000,000 times before: No more about the stupid pranks. OMFG.

Aren't angling for them to tell us unrevealed story: I think it's clear that they are planning a revival at some point. If there is one, they are going to want to save answers to some very juicy questions so that the narrative can reveal itself, and if it doesn't happen, do we really want the actors to Word of God the story to us? Relatedly...

Aren't about settling stupid fandom scores: Come on guys. Let's not go to these things and Show Our Whole Ass. They don't need to take sides in our dramas, and they shouldn't want to.

An essential "yes and" I feel we outta emphasize often and loudly: queer coded media IS queer media, but nothing about Cas saying "I love you" romantically to Dean is SUBtext or coding. It's CLEAR TEXT as Jensen nicely put it and it's REPRESENTATION, and a damn important one the team fought for that matters years later. Sometimes it just hits how much denialists have bled us dry of the joy we deserve to feel/how loud we should really be at this yknow? (Making this an ask because I think everyone should hear it lol)

Today I cried a little bit because I remembered that when Beethoven conducted his ninth symphony for the first time he got a standing ovation and one of the sopranos had to turn him around to see the audience.

I feel like we don't talk about how fucking terrifying V and Johnny's situation is. Arasaka is changing the definition of what it means to be legally and medically dead. V isn't dying, they're being overwritten by someone else. Their body, now technically Johnny's because of the biochip, is fighting them off like an infection.

Johnny is supposed to be in control of V's body. *V* is the parasite getting flushed.

I'm thinking about Johnny's phantom limb pain slowly starting to affect V as he begins to overwrite them. It starts with aching and then slowly begins to feel like their entire left side above the waist is on fire. There's a disconnect from it all---they can still move and see their own arm made of flesh and blood, but it all looks and feels wrong. The pain comes from somewhere in the back of V's mind and creeps closer and closer everyday like a forest fire.

In canon, there's a chance that V can see Johnny when looking in the mirror. V is still staring at their *own* reflection, but sees someone else instead. How many hours do they stand in front of that mirror going in and out of Johnny's construct? There's a point where neither of them will be fully in control, but it will be some fucked up mix of both of them. It's a balance scale that gets more and more uneven by the day.

And then there's Johnny, who technically isn't the real Johnny Silverhand. He's nothing but an experimental copy of an original, and there's probably dozens of others they copy and pasted to do tests on. What happens when he gets control of the body and can develop more? It's still V's physical structure he will exist in. Who's to say he won't be a completely different person in 5 years?

God I fucking love this game.
