OH OK!! hs au is an au idea ly came to me with (and i swiftly hijacked, as per usual xbjkn <33) - it's a highschool au, actually, so some characters are teens. there are bits taken from limited life—namely we have clockers as a family, and bad boy friendship (including untrue rumours circulating about them).

grian is scar's direct neighbour, their bedroom windows face each other and each of them has a little roof underneath it. which means they could climb over into the other's room if they felt so inclined :3c

also, i have to admit, for the bit where it goes, "May I be the reason for you to stay? / Know my whole world collapses when you're away" i was actually thinking of grian's self sacrificial tendencies (ones that eventually lead to him running away just before the rescue, in a misguided attempt to save scar) - and this being scar's words trying to tether grian, to make him stay instead. to not leave him because then everything is pointless (his world would collapse)

but i LOVE the idea of it being grian's part in this song, post-reunion. oh that's also so very good!! <3

I feel like mai's scenario can only work if grian's group are still pretty young, like not senior fighters. But that is cruel, being left for dead to be shred by wolves sounds awful

Then again becoming a dragon-phantom snack doesn't sound pleasing either.

They're in a forest right? Was it a bigass bear or tiger, maybe a pack of wolves? By "creature" what do you mean? Is it in minecraft or not?

they are in a forest, yes!

but here's two important things to know:

it was just kane and grian. on their usual outing, which is for grian to get to fly around a bit (like in this fic). the area is always combed and made safe from hunters before they go so they know it's at least somewhat safe to do. but,

this world's fauna and flora are twisted, fucked up, unusual, and a lot of the times, deadly.

it's not the usual minecraft stuff.

see, there's more deterrents not to fly than just being potentially spotted by hunters. originally, me and link were talking about watchtowers, about arrows, harpoons attached to nets, alerts being sent out, hunting parties, etc. but... we thought, what if there was more keeping grian ground-bound?

what if there were dangerous creatures in the sky?

and so this li'l fella was born!

and when i say li'l i actually mean pretty big. oops.

it's a phantom-dragon (it's how i call them for the lack of better name kjcnbx). there's not a lot of them, but meeting one can very swiftly turn deadly. they're predators, fast fliers, have a blood-freezing screech, and are equipped with razor sharp claws and fangs.

usually, it takes more than one vex to take this creature down. no vex would be foolish enough to go into a one-on-one fight. killing one of these would take a whole vex party, and because of the dangers of it, it's not really worth it to try.

the best you can do is duck, stay near the ground, and hope it passes by without catching sight of you. forests are good for that!

... except grian wasn't down below the trees. he was up in the sky.

I know Kane and Grian got injured by something else… but, here is what i thought originally happened:

(for this scenario to make sense, think that nico, nadia, and scar are somewhere else, with like a different group of hunting vexes. Kane and Grian are together)

There was a close call, one of the hunters managed to escape and are now running to alert the others. During the chase to hunt back the hunters, Grian and Kane got seperated into different groups. It causes a shiver to go down Grian's back at the feeling of not having any of his flock near him

He can only hope they'll group up in the meeting spot before heading home, the urge to hug Scar for the rest of the day is palpable.

"I can't see them anymore," Grian informs his crew as he lands softly. The rush of flying still buzzing under his skin

"Damn it, guess we gotta tell the others today is a bust when we meet up." One of the vexes sighs, head down, disappointment written in his face. "We can still continue.." another inquires. "No, no.. its too dangerous now. Better just head back, we're clearly in the hunters' territory now"

Grian was disappointed with them, the chase has been exhilarating (it's nice to not be the hunted for once) but he won't lie that his shoulders didn't relax at the mention of regrouping with Kane. Chuckling to himself, he recalls how Kane was a flustered mess when he saw Grian take down a hunter or two. He was so distracted in his thoughts, he didn't see where he was stepping.

He let his guard down.

SNAP CRUNCH He swallowed the shout that was about to come out, resulting in a strangled and pained gasp instead. The other vexes were in shock by the loud sound of a bear trap in the silent forest. A bear trap-snare.

Its claws dig into his calf. His face contorts to that of pain as he tries to pull his leg. It will not budge. "Oh man, don't worry, i gotcha, birdie." One of the vexes came rushing to his aid

"Wait-" a hand shot out to the vex shoulder. Stopping her, "do you hear that?" His ears pointed upwards

She raises her head to look at them, questioning, but strains her ear to what they said. Grian does the same, dread filling his ears. The silent forest barks back Barking. Wolves "Hunting wolves.." another vex nervously voiced. They all stare back to Grian, seeing the blood thats pouring out of his calf. They can lose the hunters, but they can't lose hunting wolves that have smelt blood.

Grian's eyes widen as he realized he wasn't the only one to come to this conclusion, setting him free and bringing him back would be just leading the hunters back to their commune. Leading hunters from their territory 'That's too many,' blares in Grian's head. But fear already has its grips on him as he stares at the other vexes pleadingly, he feels his blood run cold when he is met with hesitance.

"We–we should help him," one of them whispers. "Are you insane? We'd be leading them right at us!" "We can't just leave him here!"

"The wolves are coming." A steely voice echoed between them all, "We don't have time for arguments, we have to make a choice, Now." "Please…" he pleads, voice small. One of the vexes stared back at him full of sympathy and guilt, "his mate won't be happy if he doesn't come back.."

A vex scoffed, "He'll find a new one, maybe a vex this time." An icy chill runs down his spine, another vex looks sickened, "are you hearing yourself? We can't just leave Scar's lover behind!" "Oh don't act like this, hes going to DIE anyway, EVERYONE knows that!"

Silence. Nothing but the sound of a heart dying and the whistle of death ringing in the woods. The wolves are nearer. They've run out of time.

The vexes looks nervous as they stare at each other, only one brave enough to look back at Grian. They're decision has been made. "I'm sorry…" one apologizes as they leave

Surprisingly, he lost all fight to get out of the trap. The words 'hes going to die anyway' rings in his head mixing with howls and barks of the wolves like death's bell. A part of him knew he was going to die one of these days. He just didn't think it would end this way.

He didn't think he would be alone.

Fear, unlike anything Kane has ever felt in his life. The moment he saw Grian's group reunite with them, without Grian. He ran in full speed to the direction they came from, not even looking back or asking any question

'Scar trusted you scar trusted you scar trusted you' repeats in his head. He can't lose his flock. He will not return without Grian.

i know we already talked about this a little in DMs but i need other people to see this too. coz it made me INSANE. you did a great job with this one hehe :3c

i have to say, i especially love this detail, this is so real of you:

but then the rest of it... gosh.

there's something about that switch from an almost endearing, wholly reassuring "i gotcha, birdie" to— well, everything after. i know you mentioned in our DMs you spun this because you kept thinking of how dismissive vexes were during the eclipse, even suggesting to use grian as a bait. that was back when they didn't really know him, and under special circumstances, but gosh.

leaving him behind like this?

oh that's cruel. that's so so cruel. he's trapped and wounded and he can't do anything but listen as the howling and barks get closer. he watches as the vex party leaves, every single one of them, and he can't stop them.

(the ribbon around his wrist is useless. it means nothing here.)

even if he'd give up fighting, he'd be so terrified.

do you think he considers (or—his instincts absolutely consider—) releasing a high pitched distress chirp? but, should he? would he? that'd attract all the hunters to him. which is terrifying. but it'd also mean pulling hunters away from any other vex groups they might be fighting with...

but scar'd undoubtedly come with them.

and if nobody else is helping?

he can't do it. he can't call for scar.

... you know, you just know, that the ribbon gang would be so mad afterwards. they'd fight anyone involved. vexes resolve things through brawls. this would be a very ugly one.

that all being said, the ribbon gang is far enough in the vex arc, and grian is a solid and accepted part of the commune by then. him and scar, they're symbols, in a way. of living over just surviving. of something bright and defiant making it through against all odds.

he's so much more than just scar's mate. even though he is still "just" an avian.

and i think the vexes wouldn't run away from the prospect of a fight. i imagine this might go in the way where they'd howl for help, instead of tucking tail. even just getting grian freed and running towards the others for help if they'd be overwhelmed in this fight (instead of leading the wolves to the commune, as they were afraid of) would be better than this. wahhh.

but gosh do i love the angst.

(and the thought of him just happening to be unluckily paired with the handful of vexes that aren't actually happy about his presence in the commune even this far into the vex arc? awgh. so awful <3)

about this. i was wrong.

we had to restructure the whole plan because i'm working on the rambles and turns out i'm being too.... rambly. oops.

so it's been reorganised and replanned pff. we should be good now!

Question, what do the hunters gain from injuring grian's wings? Won't it just make worth less? All of those injuries seems a bit excessive, also look at how pressed they are, kane loosen your grip, my god...

oh, no, hunters would gain nothing from destroying their precious prize. but the thing is— grian and kane weren't attackd by hunters. they got attacked by a Creature.

and kane himself is barely standing. he's clutching onto grian tightly, with desperation, because the most important thing right now is not to drop him. to get him to safety.

and it's even more heartbreaking when you consider that:

kane's usually always careful around grian's wings, and

grian's completely limp in his grip

you have no idea how much i love baby bird grian. is he always that sleepy

kind of! in this au grian can switch between two forms (well, a normal grian and a tiny bird). mostly, tinybirdification happens when he feels overwhelmed or tired, so, when he's a small bird he just want to hide somewhere safe and rest :)

he refuses to admit he can be tired so there are no spots for him in his big base so he need to impovise, for example that's why he has a nest on scar's hat...

so, back to your question... he is mostly sleepy when he's a tiny bird, but that's the whole point of being a tiny bird!
