I kept seeing posts about "Idols we need to keep an eye on because they have depression" and it irked me so much because as a psychologist, I was taught that labelling and diagnosing without proper evaluation is dangerous and unethical.

I know people meant well with that post. You are worried about your idols and want people to pay more attention to them. But it is still wrong to label and judge them.

Depression is not a joke. It is a serious matter.

Even if some of the artists mentioned in the list have said it themselves that they had depression, it's still not okay to put it out like that. You never know what all these attentions will do to them. How will you feel if you are just stressed out about something and someone suddenly says to you "you are depressed"? Won't you start questioning it? Won't you start being overly conscious about it and stresses yourself out further? And when you really have depression and suddenly people are coming at you saying stuffs like "i know you have depression", "you have depressiom but it's okay we are here for you, you are going to be fine", "we have said i love you to you everyday so you will get better". Before I go further, I just wanna say that each person's reaction is going to be different, but here I just wanna point out what could go wrong. What if all the attentions given to that person only worsen that person condition? Some people will feel pressured..They will think that I have to get better so I won't disappoint anyone. And when they can't get better, they will blame themselves. They will think of themselves as a failure. Do you want that to happen?

Does it need a label for you to appreciate your idols more? Why does your idol need to be "depressed" for you to say 'I love you' everyday? Why do they need to be "sick" for you to stop sending hateful comments to them? You should have done that even if your idols are not depressed. You should have appreciated your idols no matter what happens. You shouldn't have bashed them because your words contributed to their current state.

Again guys, it's totally okay to be concerned about your idols' well-being, but assuming they have a particural mental health issue is not the right way to do it. That is also a personal matter to them so you have no right to label and diagnose them. You can't diagnose a person's mental state just from several videos and pictures or interview excerpts.

Show love to your idols everyday. Appreciate them everyday. Stop sending hate comments. Stop fanwars.
