My biggest beef with Double Exposure breaking up max and Chloe off screen isn't even about the breakup itself. Like, yeah blah blah blah I ship pricefield whatever, but it's more like a massive red flag that this is a desperate, lazy cash grab.
Like I actually really love the stuff we've seen of the new love interest in the new game. The story itself, with max removed, seems pretty cool actually. I love the idea of a murder mystery plot where you bounce between universes where it did and didn't happen. That's a really cool idea that I would love to see a game of!
The problem is none of it feels Max Caufield. Even if you want to try and justify it by the shit max did in the last chapter of game 1, that was max time traveling to various points of her own life and then popping back up in the present of the world after her changes. Unless it turns out max is the killer, it just doesn't track the same.
It feels like they wrote an entirely separate story for a new mc and pushed Max in as an after thought. Genuinely, if they'd put a new mc in the game I'd be overjoyed for it. Like they wanted to use Max for the marketing pull but didn't want to make one ending canon or put in the work to write a story about a longstanding relationship already in progress. So they just broke em up so they can write another "new couple coming together" plot that's way easier.
Like it or not, Chloe Price is an essential element of the story of Max Caufield. Max's powers being time travel are a clear expression of her wanting to make up for her mistakes in the past, mostly around the harm she did to Chloe by abandoning her. Chloe's death is a result of max abandoning her because she wasn't there to help her friend when she was needed most. Max's devotion to saving her is based on that guilt and the fact she still loves her best friend. Sacrificing Chloe is Max admitting she can't undo the harm she did but trying to stop from hurting others. Sacrificing the bay is her saying she is WILLING to do whatever it takes to make up for her mistakes and make things right with Chloe.
Even if you wanted to do some exploring of what it means to break that kind of bond with someone, you don't do it BY HAVING THEM BREAK UP OFF SCREEN. Lazy, hack, spineless bullshit is what that is.
If you have something interesting to say with a change in direction for a character, have the confidence to stand on it. If not, then either leave it the fuck alone, or put in the work to follow the core of a story to its faithful successor.
Idk, if it really knocks folks socks off I may give it a shot but all I'm saying is this feels like a big warning sign that the team making this sequel kinda don't give a fuck.

Idk y'all, I just don't think meaninglessly breaking up one of gaming's most formative wlw couples with little to no explanation is really the move. In today's media climate especially, when it feels as though all the doors Max and Chloe helped open are suddenly being slammed shut again... Whine about the validity of bae vs bay, doomed narratives, trauma-bonding, and ill-founded time traveling anxieties all you want, Pricefield is a pillar of the queer games community, a significant moment in history, and destroying it has an impact. And I think people affected by that impact are allowed to be mad about it.

Alright what the fuck
I've been having fun till now reacting to all the dumb shit deck nine put in this game, but honestly this is the only thing that made me genuinely upset. What the actual fuck is that drawing????? Why on earth would Max ever draw herself like that??? Like wtf she almost looks like she's smiling, sleeping peacefully 🤨🤨🤨 This was literally one of the most traumatic events of her life, I'm pretty sure that's not how she remembers it.
And also "I was infatuated with a hot teacher" what the ACTUAL FUCK are you guys smoking at deck nine?????? When the fuck was Max ever infatuated with Jefferson, or ever called him hot??? She literally told Chloe it was "gross" when she called him hot, and heavily criticized Victoria for her flirting with Jefferson. Max was NOT infatuated with him, she had that typical "crush" that is born out of admiration rather than physical or romantic attraction.
Like what the actual fuck, deck nine?

Okay. I can't just let this rest...
So. We have a clip from Max's journal that is out now that shows lackluster art, dialogue from Max and Chloe, and is basically Chloe teasing Max that they should have a threesome with some rando guy. And on the surface it's idiotic and stupid (and part of Deck Nine's efforts to demonize Chloe and break up Pricefield so people will ship Max with Safi). But if you know anything about LiS...
Let's get this straight. (Because neither Max nor Chloe are straight.) Chloe Price, the young woman who freaked out because her mom started flirting with an in-your-face ex-military type within two months of her father's death and married said asshole probably within a year of William's death (and definitely in canon married Joyce before Chloe's 16th birthday), who threw a huge fit upon hearing her not-quite-girlfriend Rachel Amber was sleeping with their drug dealer (and not just a one-and-done deal), and who Rachel Amber herself describes in a note to Chloe in giving the "stink-eye" when Rachel flirted with guys, this Chloe Price... suggested having a threesome with some random guy.
Chloe Price is not fucking Rachel Amber. She has abandonment issues, she is possessive as fuck, and she is fucking loyal. Even after learning about Rachel cheating on her, Chloe still wanted to find Rachel rather than just write her off. This girl can give dogs lessons in loyalty to those she loves.
I said this in previous posts. It is clear that Deck Nine is doing to Chloe in the Bae setting what they did to Max in BtS by making her into someone she is not and setting up a reason to hate Chloe so they can push their new ship. It is shoddy and sophomoric writing that fails to capture the character as she was previously established. It is the worse aspects of fanfic writing. And in fact, the majority of fanfic writers are better writers than these hacks.

Still waiting for DE to come out to finally criticize the whole game (and I swear this will be long) but what the hell am I looking at ?

There's so much wrongs right here that I don't even know where to start...
Where are the stickers and random thingies Max used to add ? Why the paper from her new diary looks so bland and greyish ? Did adulthood sucked all the personality out of Max because last time I checked, her 18yo self was slightly more inspired
Like idk, if you want to milk your cash cow to the last drop, you could at least do it properly ?
And why her drawing style became so fucking boring visually ?? It literally looks like one of those cheap magazines that teach you how to draw manga characters

So they missed the point of Chloe’s character. Made her a “free spirit who doesn’t want to be tied down” even though that does not sound like her at all. She’s not Rachel. She literally has abandonment issues. She’s loyal and loves hard. She doesn’t let go of things easily or often. She craves to be loved and wanted.
And made her a loser bum who has no future or career. Girl is extremely intelligent especially in science. They could have given her huge science career where her and Max would be long distance because of said career which would have explained her absence better than a bs break up.
Edit:
And for some reason I still think we are being tricked. I feel like this could be all in Max’s mind like a nightmare or something. Since Chloe apparently is now hanging out with Victoria on top of all the other stuff we find out in the first few episodes. She’s saying and doing everything nightmare Chloe did in the first game.
