My name is Anjanette, a single mom of two boys age 5 and 14.  I’ve always been an avid fan of taking trips…girls trips, family trips, work trips, road trips and any other opportunity to travel to some unknown land I had yet to discover.  But I remember it like it was yesterday on a family trip in the Dominican Republic in 2013 that I declared that I would show my sons the world.  I was so enamored by our 17 year old tour guide, Peter, who spoke seven (7) different languages when most American kids struggle with English that I decided to make a change….starting with my own kids.
I immediately returned home and started researching immersion programs for my youngest son who was two (2) at the time.  I found a great school that offered full immersion in two languages of Mandarin and Spanish.  I thought this was a wise choice since Mandarin is the most widely spoken language given the population of China is almost 1.2 billion.  According to Babble.com, Spanish comes in second by about 400 millions more speakers of the language over English.  My oldest son was in his last year of elementary school where he was being introduced to Spanish through a “specials” liberal art programs and would attend an International Baccalaureate program where the middle school focus language was French.  So between the two of them we basically had the map of the world covered.
With them learning new languages it became apparent to me that I needed to make traveling a priority in our family to allow them the opportunity to utilize their newly acquired skills. While the oldest struggled with the acquisition of the languages, he’s a huge history buff which still made travel a priority to enhance his learning by actually seeing some of the sites most kids his age only read about in their history class.
Our first trip was to Lima, Peru.  My oldest could attend because school was still in session so the little one and I made the journey without him but I did promise I wouldn’t go to Manchu Picchu. So our adventure was limited to Peru; however, we still had a great time exploring various museums, historic mansions and churches with bones of the dead in the basement.
