Small update!
I promise you guys that I am still working on this project. It has not been abandoned. I am actually planning a 20 hour move to the other side of the country, so I haven’t had the most spoons as of late! But I will do my best to complete tournament seeding by tonight.

i know submissions are closed, but i would like to present two creatures to everyone just because they look funny
first, the arabian sand boa
Tumblr media
yes this thing is real. i've heard it described as looking like a child's best attempt at drawing a snake
and next, i would like to present... the sacabambaspis
Tumblr media
this thing was a jawless prehistoric fish. it's extinct now, but like, look at it. its so silly
Look at those sillies…

What's the most surprising submission you got, in your opinion?
I’m assuming the 120 shark submissions don’t count, so— Probably the common spotted cuscus! I don’t hear much about those guys. :)

The final creature count is IN!
This is it, everybody! The final creature count is updated, and I can move forward with seeding each category of the tournament. For our ultimate tally, we have...
78 extinct species
90 amphibians
90 reptiles
136 birds
158 mollusks (et al)
272 mammals
460 arthropods (et al)
and 546 fish!
This makes for a grand total of 1,830 unique species contending for the position of Tumblr's favorite animal!

Your post about sea slugs made me realize that I forgot to submit any species from the genus Elysia :(
Worry not! Elysia chlorotica will be representing!

So, I'm working on the final creature count.
One of the parts of this process is to peep the animal just a little bit, to see if there's enough information about it to include it and also which category to sort it into.
Tumblr media
And I guess I'm going to have to make a new category, because his ass is food.

Let it be known that I am still chipping away at this final creature count! I have just been working 13 hour shifts, so I haven’t had a lot of spare time.

So, this is particularly cursed. But jellyfish, sea anemone, coral, and anything else that didn’t fit neatly into one of the categories got lumped in with either Arthropods (et al) or Mollusks (et al). Even if they are not anywhere near an arthropod or mollusk.
Better yet, they’re sorted based on VIBES.
The reasons for this include:
• Easier sorting
• Bulking numbers of less popular categories to make for more balanced tournament brackets
• Prevention of categories having <10 submissions
As someone who's submitted almost exclusively mammals (and one insect), I really hope that the people that like other kinds of animal get their nerd on and submit their silly little guys, so we can have more non-mammal rep!
I unfortunately don't know a lot about birds, reptiles, or amphibians so it would feel wrong to submit them just for the sake of it, but I hope they get all the love they deserve!!!
Mammals are fun! Each of them is fascinating in some way or another. That being said, I’m so glad there’s a significant amount of rep for other types of animals. I hope to raise awareness about how cool and deserving of love all animals are, regardless of how cute and cuddly they happen to be.

hiiiiii! ik polls haven't started yet but i'm here to submit some propaganda for one of many sharks, this guy being a pretty popular one so i hope he makes it far:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
my beloved friend tiger shark <3
for one thing i think tiger sharks are so so pretty. so cool. look at them. they are beautiful. one of the best naturally occurring animal patterns in the world in my opinion.
here are some fun facts about tiger sharks:
they are "near threatened" on the IUCN's conservation scale, meaning we do not really need to worry about them going away any time soon!
they are the only extant member of their genus, galeocerdo!
their stripes actually begin to fade as they mature!
they are mostly nocturnal hunters!
their females are typically larger, with the biggest measuring over 5 m (16 ft 5 in)!
there are only 3 extant species with average sizes larger than tiger sharks (and only one of them [the great white] is predatory)!
they are often known as "garbage eaters" or the "garbage can(s) of the sea" due to their tendency to eat inedible objects found in the ocean! silly sharks.
and finally, they are so so cute. look at these juvenile tiger sharks:

how could you possibly be mad at them? with those big black eyes? or the BEAUTIFUL stripes on the middle one? look how tiny he is too. come on. they're perfect.
okay that's it <3 i will be back with more shark propaganda at some point but these guys are far easier to find pictures of so! they are my first post. thanks for listening <3
So beautiful… So smooth

Greetings! I have submitted the humble platypus for your cosideration. Here are some fun facts I'm using as propoganda (or Platyganda if you will):
Platypuses are fluorescent and turn teal under blacklight. (fluorescent is NOT the same as bioluminecent)
Males have venoumous spurs on their ankles and this venom resists opiod painkillers, leaves victims in intense pain for weeks (sometimes months), shares a few compounds with cobra venoum despite both evolving seperately, and is stored in modified sweat glands.
They have electroreceptors in their bills which allow them to sense the electrical impulses of their prey.
Platypuses close their eyes, ears, and nostrils when diving to become watertight and can hold their breath up to 11 minutes.
They don't have stomaches and don't seem to need them.
Platypuses move like lizards on land.
They have the second densest fur of all mammals. (only otters beat them here)
Platypuses fold their webbing under their hands when on land.
Platypuses have 5 sets of sex cromosomes like birds.
They have prehensile tails that store most of their body fat.
Females lack teats and instead "sweat" milk for their puggles.
Puggles are born with teeth but lose them as they grow.
Both sexes are hatched with spurs, females shed theirs.
Yes, babies are called puggles and hatch from eggs. This is important.
I've also heard they make good secret agents but that's just a rumor.
(good greif I've spent too much time studying these little guys)

Puggles upon ye!

Thank you everyone!
It means a great deal to me that this tournament has garnered so many submissions. That being said, submissions are now closed.
You should have your final creature count within the week, and shortly thereafter the polls will begin!

It might be too late, but.. are extinct animals allowed?
Extinct animals are allowed, but have their own category. You still have an hour to submit as many as you’d like!

I would like to apologize for submitting a few animals before seeing that it needed to be in binomial nomenclature, i got too excited lol
No worries! While I very very very much prefer submissions to be in binomial nomenclature, your submission will probably not be discarded for using a common name. If I can figure out what you’re talking about, it’ll be there.
