Can we talk about the respect Lucifer shows Sam in S5?

Lucifer has been waiting for Sam’s vessel for “a long, long time”. In fact, it’s essential to the showdown that has consumed his thoughts for eons.

Yet when Sam finally offers him permission in Swan Song, he restrains himself. In fact, he waits for Sam to say yes THREE times before he occupies his body.

The first time, he makes sure he’s heard him correctly. The second time, he questions the validity of Sam’s decision.

The third time, he accepts the offer BUT ONLY AFTER he’s talked it through with him: established the facts; set the terms of the deal; got his final approval. He doesn’t just want to manipulate Sam - he goes out of his way to make sure they have a mutual understanding, based on honesty.

Lucifer, who has invariably referred to his hatred of the human race (“a pile of cockroaches”; “hairless apes”; “broken, flawed, abortions”, etc.), shows Sam Winchester an unparalleled level of respect.
