A little obsessed with the "utterly burnt out & can't quite figure out how to make it work in this economy" depiction of Mario in the concept art.

Just saw How Do You Live (Boy and the Heron). In short, it delivered but this isn't a review, we're chatting about a single animator. Avoiding all trailers I was surprised to see this opening scene:
Tumblr media
That's definitely Shinya Ohira, I thought.
Often I wonder about the process of an artist bringing a concept to reality. Starting life as an idea, it gets filtered, drained and blemished through the process of reaching the audience.
Tumblr media
When I see Ohira's scenes I become aware of my heartbeat as if it's synchronizing with his.
Tumblr media
Though I first saw his work on Akira, this short from the Animatrix was THE ONE. I still call it "Ya Know, The Skateboard Kid" and people know exactly what I'm talking about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ohira's opening scene in How Do You Live was left uncorrected which worked with the nightmarish atmosphere of the sequence. I'd imagine bringing his work on-model has to be hell.
Tumblr media
You're watching an anime and suddenly, THAT SCENE pops up. Kill Bill, Howl's Moving Castle, Ping Pong, you know the ones.
In animation, they want you to stay on-model, keep the show cohesive, but speaking as one that works in the industry, I want to be seen.
You're watching something and get asked, "Wanna see something really cool?" and you get this crazy animation flex. I want to see artist go wild. Gimme THAT SCENE!

Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: The Rebellion Story - Holy Quintet
youtube
โš ๏ธ Flashing images
One of my fave magical girl transformations. Each vignette is stuffed with personality, meaningful symbols, different musical motifs, and types of dance catered to each girl-- yet the sequence feels super cohesive.
Mami is effortlessly graceful whose song is cut short. Kyoko is fiery and aggressive, and underneath her confidence is raw anger and fear. Sayaka is heralded by (heroic? funeral?) bells and runs headlong into her magical self, covering her face in despair afterward. Homura's vignette is fraught with repeating images and film distortion effects. Madoka's dance is full of optimism and hope. I can go on.
Rebellion is honestly one of the most visually stunning films I've seen.

Procreate Dreams versus ToonSquid - Which Animation App is better?
youtube
A great, concise rundown comparing basic features between Toonsquid and Procreate Dreams (in their current versions).
I've used Toonsquid and tbh it's SHOCKINGLY feature-packed and intuitive for me jumping to it from Adobe Animate. If Procreate Dream feels a bit taunting to learn, I'd say give Toonsquid a try

Sherlock Hound - Ships and Submersibles
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sherlock Hound is an animation series directed by Hayao Miyazaki and Kyosuke Mikuriya in 1983. The series was a joint project between Japan's Tokyo Movie Shinsha and the Italian public broadcasting corporation RAI. Six episodes were directed by Miyazaki in 1981 until problems with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's estate led to a suspension in production. By the time the issues were resolved Miyazaki had turned to other projects, and thus the remaining episodes were directed by Mikuriya. The show was finally aired in 1984.
