Part 1: Have you ever seen Guardian of the Galaxy 2? In the movie the villian, Ego(who's name should be a dead giveaway of what he represents), was so threatened by his love for another person that he killed that person to rid his emotions. That's kind of what F did too, he was so threatened by his love for Rize, that he dropped the steel beams on her to erase his emotions. In the end he's met with the fact that he can never erase his emotions. Even if he broke the cage, he never went after
Part 2: what he truly wanted. I don’t think we’re meant to see K’s and F’s way of fighting against the system as objectively good or bad, but different. F tries to erase his humanity, but is left with nothing. K tries to connect with other people, reaffirming his humanity, and because of that knows to repent, while F has no idea of how he could take responsibility. I think in the end the contrast of F an K is meant to show to not throw away your humanity. Channeling the late Yoshimura over here.
Yes, I love that movie! Mantis is adorable.
I saw Furuta’s treatment of Rize more as part of his attempt to dominate all those aspects of his life that he felt were going out of his control (much like his lust for power to make up for his sense of insignificance and his need to make a mark to make up for his fear of transience).
Tumblr media
This is an interesting analysis and I especially like the tie to Yoshimura. However I still believe the core difference between Kaneki and Furuta is their driving force: Kaneki’s motivation to create a better world against Furuta’s nihilism. I don’t think they are meant to be seen as equivocal either, considering Kaneki’s happy ending and Furuta’s tragic one.
That said, a lot of your points of analysis spring out of that divide. Furuta certainly does try to push his feelings away by engaging in what is essentially high-stakes thrill-seeking, much like his clown compatriots, as a kind of escapism. This requires a callousness removed from reality and, as you say, humanity (in the traditional sense rather than referring exclusively to humans), which is why he remained isolated. Kaneki on the other hand was able to maintain that humanity by not giving in and continuing to strive against the current, which grounded him firmly in reality.
Tumblr media
Essentially the difference between the two is that Furuta is a writer and Kaneki a character. Furuta plans out and creates tragedy, removed from the subjects he “toy[s] with”, whereas Kaneki suffers with them in that world as a fellow “plaything”. This enables Kaneki to form bonds with them out of their shared suffering. Although Furuta becomes a writer in an attempt to rise above suffering, he only serves to isolate himself and he suffers all the same in the end.
So yes, clinging onto your humanity, empathy and sense of the wider World (this arc’s tarot!) as opposed to just your own pain and desires is central to the story.

Rooftops and shots of the sky are a motif I've picked up on in TG. Like when a character will be espousing their worldview it'll be juxtaposed with a picture of the sky or they'll be talking on a rooftop. Ex: Kaneki and Amon's conversation, Amon's speech to Akira about living with emptiness, Kaneki telling Hide he wants to take responsibility. Is there a deeper meaning to these shots other than a cool aesthetic?
I see them as a way of framing a character next to the wider world. As you say, they’re usually discussing their world view - the sky shows how this single figure has adapted to survive in a world which wears them down. Shots of the sky (along with the moon, earth or rays of the sun) often accompany statements on the world’s nature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Night skies often accompany negative moods, while brighter skies tend to demonstrate hope or new direction, as with the examples you listed. I always felt the rising sun in the last chapter of the first series gave it a tone of biting irony, that day is here but everything the sun now shines upon is tragic. But the last page shows how the brighter sky is a subtle indicator of hope for the next series.
Tumblr media
And then, when we get there…
Tumblr media
What we enter is not immediately a tragedy, but rather a series where our protagonist is, though not fully, far happier than we’ve seen him before. As the yellow text says, the sky next to the tragedy is a clear blue, and I believe this applies to the story of :re as a whole.
Tumblr media
The original series has many moments at night-time, whereas :re tends to have more blue skies as hope is gradually rising. The exceptions to this rule are when tragedy returns to :re when Kaneki regains his memories and continues his tragic story:
Tumblr media
Kaneki’s talk with Takizawa, where both are shown to essentially be hanging onto a thread to stay alive.
Tumblr media
The talk between Uta and Donato on the rooftop, with the Clowns being the most nihilistic characters of the series…
Tumblr media
And the rampage of Dragon, perhaps Kaneki’s darkest moment of all, which is also preceded by this artwork as the attack on the 24th Ward becomes well underway. The darkness and “shadow” is telling, as is the chapter title: Night Comes. This is also the chapter where the strength of Roma, a Clown (therefore associated with night), is demonstrated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But still far moreso than the original we see lighter skies focused on in :re. Even if the skies and circumstances are cloudy, light still escapes them. I’m holding out for a sky of the most brilliant blue yet to be the ending shot to perfectly wrap up this series. The light shone on the world in 176 is the most hopeful image we’ve had yet.
Tumblr media
You’ll have noticed that a lot of these images also incorporate shots of the city as well. This is also about placing actions within the wider context of society, and that city we often see in the background is brought dramatically to the fore with Dragon, where Kaneki’s actions completely change the landscape.
The sky and the city both function as a way of showing the interaction between the world and the individual, and this latest tarot, The World, has introduced a harmony where the world is no longer ‘wrong’ for the individual or at odds with them, and has demonstrated the value of responsibility and selfless dedication to the wider, city-saving, world-saving goal.

The first thing I thought of when I heard that Tokyo Ghoul Re will be ending in 3 chapters is a quote from Nishiki: The end always comes in the blink of an eye.
Tokyo ghoul has been a pillar of strength for me to carry on, whenever I think of wanting to give up, I turn to it and go ‘oh, if Kaneki doesn’t, how can I?’ I have never loved a manga and anime as much as TG because of the amount of humanness the characters have in them and how much I can relate to them. TG touches on very real issues and it has changed my life in so many ways.
Even if it ends, I will continue to be in the fandom and hopefully some of you will too. All things eventually come to an end and I trust that ishida will give a beautiful end to TGRE.

Kaneki’s speech in this chapter really embodies the change that he has experienced since this series first began. In the beginning, Ken is nothing more than a passive character — lamenting and accepting his tragedy. It is the way of the world — because the world is “wrong.” However, Ken had come to view the world differently. Last chapter, he accepted that the world “just is,” — not good and not bad — but something that lie somewhere in between — somewhere in the grey.
Tumblr media
Likewise, Ken also acknowledges that despite the sadness of the world — despite the fact that one’s time is limited on this Earth — one can still fight for the beauty and for the little moments that take place in between. We don’t have to calmly accept tragedy. We are not passive and helpless passengers in our own stories.
Tumblr media
We still have choices to make to choose our fate. To choose how we live — and how we die. At the beginning of the story — ken could not make a choice as a symbol of his own perceived helplessness to the things that happened to him. And now — he takes ownership of his fate. His growth has really been beautiful to see.
Thank you for this story, Ishida Sui. It’s really been a pleasure to read and grow with these characters. Especially Kaneki.

Ok… I don’t have definitely any excuse for being absent for so much time from this community, i probably was taking time to think about things i want to do, and how much i want to truly accomplish them. So…tg, and all of us has been trough a lot of things, despair after che 143, and then a little blink of hope, lead by Hide’s coming back, touka Urie and co. I have several strong ideas about how all’ of this will finish but i must promise ti enjoy every page ishida will draw till the end of this heartbreaking story. Now, about the “big” change: since 90 days till now i started a challenge with myself, about drawing, sketching, trying to come up with something , and doing it for a whole year. So i think i’m not gonna edit any more tg graphic, also cause i don’t have actual time. For sure i will do dome drawings related to tg, or in which a quote from tg appear, and it’s related with a drawing that fits the quote’s meaning. I know some of you could not accept it, coming back after a long time and just change out of nowhere the content of this profile, but it’s okay if you will decide to leave, in that case, a big, enormous “Thank you!” for being here also while i essere absentia, and sorry. For those who decide to remain…let’s get started, i’m all pumped up and i think it’s time to restart 😄😄😄

Once again, my dear lost one, you have to chose
Which Path?
The last time we saw him, we assumed he reached his ultimatum, his final choice, his true acceptance. We were shown a face, we were shown what he done in grotesque horror, and then what became of him.
However, a wrench was thrown into the works.
This is not the end for him, not yet.
Tumblr media
Right now, our dear Kaneki is at the precipice of yet another decision he is forced to make, yet another decision he never volunteered for, only due to circumstances of his own making. He must choose again.
What becomes of the kagune mass known as Dragon, or the “Tokyo Ghoul” as some would call it, ironically is irrelevant in this story. It’s what emerges from it, the person who created it, the person who took the lives of thousands. One man who was inflicted with tragedy, has now allowed his disease to spill across the city, becoming the embodiment of death itself, the reaper.
Somehow, despite all of this, he has been forgiven and ignored. The people choose to look at him as a man, and not a monster, all the while staring upwards at the thing which towers above skyscrapers. They willingly surrender their souls to him, as one would worship a God. The Dragon wasn’t enough. It wasn’t enough to make them realize their mistakes, and what caused all of this hatred and despair in the first place. Instead, ignorance remains blissful, for now.
Until he comes back that is. What will happen then? None of us can say for sure, we can only wonder. Should we be excited? Should we be happy? Or Should we be afraid?
When he comes back again, will we get our happily ever after? Will everyone remain in their little bubble, their fantasy, their games of make believe? Surely everything will be much better that way, right?
Or will everything burn? Will he betray them, and their expectations? Will he break everyone’s fantasies, while remaining in his own? When the Kakuja collapses and the smoke clears, will something even worse emerge?
Will Ken Kaneki forever be known as a Human, or a Ghoul?
Tumblr media
Or a Monster.
