The forgotten songs - DL fanfic, part 2 of 2
part one is here:
Of course it was dark, and significantly colder than outside; the sun hadn't reached down here in forever.
It was only logical, the Royal Family's tomb had been sealed perhaps for centuries of stillness by the looks of it, or at least 50 years; how often did a member of that family die?
Shu would probably not know, and he probably shouldn't ask him, but the ground didn't look like it had been excavated recently and the hole was quite deep.
Soon they reached something that definitely looked like human-made architecture; the floor was suddenly ancient cobble stone and there was an arch forming an actual entrance to a deeper darkness.
-How creepy... Should we go back? -Shu asked, only checking for Edgar; he was determined to go in to find out what could they have possibly wanted to seal with magic.
He could see a bit farther ahead, but he knew for his friend this must be pitch-black.
-On the count of 3 and ya grab my hand not to get lost, yeah?
After a few meters, the stench was a spectacle; it smelled as if the small storage room Edgar had found at his grandparents' house had been mixed with a 100 dead rats, dust and humidity, and the air was cold. He couldn't see anything, he only heard the echo of his footsteps, some insects crawling and felt eyes on his head like something swirly was watching from above. The place must have been tall; his outstretched arms didn't reach neither walls nor ceiling.
For Shu, the stench obviously came from the skeletons in various states of decomposition, shattering and scattering throughout the square room.
It was rather careless to be a royal family place of rest, unless something else had caused a ruckus at some point and had left without obvious trace. There were centipedes and other crawlies that tended to live underground wandering about; the architects of this tomb had left the natural rock walls and only bothered with the flooring, the entrance and something rather curious: Ahead of him were three tall stairs with inscriptions in an old language and two torches surrounding a barred wooden door. How it had not rotted away in this humidity was probably magic.
-Dammit, I see nothing! Do yeh?
Demon world, unknown castle where a massive party was being held, a year ago
Shu didn't mind parties where there was music and he could dance or play violin, but those parties rarely happened.
Plus, he wasn't fond of meeting up with the only other young vampires he knew, his half brothers. It's not that he didn't like them, but their moms kept pitting them against each other and it got awkward. It was a huge drag.
Currently, he was trying to grab some dessert while Cordelia and his mom were about to start their usual interactions while Subaru tried to stop Christa from grabbing a flower vase to throw it at Cordelia's head.
Reiji was eating popcorn and looked at the scene disapprovingly; Ayato grabbed a microphone and started narrating the scene as if it was a fighting tournament which obviously favored Cordelia, and Kanato started crying and went for cover under a table, taking dessert with him while the rest of the adults tried to stop the fight.
How noisy. Shu left the hall while the commotion hid "the possible future head of the house"'s absence. When the noise had faded he started hearing something much more pleasant, a piano at the distance. It was a bit off key, and the player wasn't very advanced, but they were okay; he followed the mellow sound. Opened a door to a ballroom full of mirrors illuminated by a green light, and by a moonlit arched window he saw a very thin, small figure...
Really?!
It was Laito playing the piano. He was mildly displeased it wasn't some kind of nice granny on the piano.
Of course it was Laito. He never bothered with throne and status stuff. He was a bit envious of him; he must have an easy existence as the younger triplet; the odds Kanato and Ayato both died were very scarce.
He was about to leave and just have a nap on a nearby couch, but,
-Shuuuu hi! Come in, come in, sit here, there is room for both of us!
Laito sounded too happy to have him come up here; Shu felt bad about leaving. He slowly joined as he looked around the ballroom with eerie portraits, vases Christa might add to her ammunition, chandeliers and even 2 big spinning wheels on the floor. The dark wooden chairs around the room with green velvet cushions clashed somewhat with the white and gold general decor and red and gold carpets and curtains.
-This place looks so much like a haunted house, huh? It's so cozy for us vampires, but they are so extreme here it's like they try to show off they just got rich!
Laito laughed. But Shu agreed, now he thought of it.
The green light though. Laito had lit some candles with green flames. He knew pureblood vampires were able to cast that type of magic but he just couldn't do it; Reiji was great at fire spells but he didn't even get a spark; Reiji kept saying it was because he was a wet blanket of an heir and his mother wouldn't even comment, just stopped trying to teach him and left without another word.
-Laito, what's with the green flame?
-Ooh us vampires can see without it but I wanted to play the piano artfully, you see, I don't think it's the same without some romanticism and drama, or is it?
Shu thought Laito was strange, green light was more menacing than romantic. But went on,
-I mean how did you cast them?
-Is the cool older brother Shu asking little Laito how to make a fire spell? I'm flattered! Listen,
He smiled and stood up. Did Laito ever get any attention at home? He was way too stoked. Laito was so weird but he couldn't deny he was kinda nice.
-To create something, you need to actually have the visual, and the touch of it on you. Feel the fire on your skin, and see the brightness with your eye. How does it feel when you have a flame near you? Dry? Hot? What shape is its glow? And put that feeling on your hand.
A green flame sprouted from Laito's hand with ease.
Shu hesitated but tried, and a blue spark came up.
-Oh!
Shu jumped back and smiled a bit after a long while of being long faced.
-Don't give up, practice and you'll burn down this mansion with all of us inside hehehe...
-What the hell is your deal, Laito... -Shu whispered- wanna keep playing piano? I'll get a violin.
-A jam! SO EXCITING!!!
Shu ended up in the dungeon later that night, but it had been worth it.
-I brought a stone that can make fire; let me make some sparks, uh, for us to see!
Shu needed some excuse to tell Edgar how exactly he knew where the torches were located. He best make sparks first for him to see as well.
-Shu! Torches! Over there! I think they still have some wax! Gimme the stones-
-Nonono I wanna practice, let me do it!
-You sure?
But Shu climbed the stairs impressively fast and lit the torches barely touching the stones. That was very smooth!
-Wow! The fire is just blue, how come?
-I don't know, maybe it's so little fuel there is only the blue part of the flame?
Shu was glad his flame wasn't green like Laito's, but an unnatural blue he could get away with lying about inside a tomb full of skeletons.
And then the door opened, and a stench right from the depths of hell hit their heads, but they didn't know it was poison gas and now they had little time left. If they'd had a canary, it would have died.
Some kind of mumbling came from inside the chamber with glowing pools of green full of something dangerous-looking that made fluorescent fumes in the middle of the room, as if some type of mining had gone awry here and left the stench of death to loom, and the voice of the undead to whisper.
-I don't want to go there Shu, I'll wait here. -Edgar covered his nose- I see another door but I can't. It makes my eyes water.
-I'll be quick! -Shu nodded and tried a reassuring smile- ...but give me your knife just in case.
The whispers became voices and soon Shu faced a very real flesh and not much else sort of, was it a puppet? It was mostly muscular tissue turned brown from putrefaction and joints exposed but not much else, disfigured faces with a very clear hole for a mouth from which a putrid breath was exhaled. Shu tried to turn around and leave, but whatever came out of the creature full of decomposition signs and bugs and webs's mouth was a venom strong enough to paralyze a pre-teen, well nourished vampire.
Shu was panicking inside as he awaited the thing to come up at him from behind, slowly and with steady footsteps, until he heard faster, lighter ones and a scream,
-NOT MY FRIEND YOU HORRID BEAST!
Edgar smashed what remained of the creature's skull with the backpack, took the knife out of Shu's rigid, paralyzed hand and cut behind its knees and as soon as it fell over, its throat; it started to dissolve but Edgar kicked it into the green liquid anyway just in case, and dragged Shu to the nearest exit out of this poison chamber.
Which was another chamber, but not the first they'd arrived to.
Edgar coughed and wiped his eyes as Shu regained motion on his face and limbs.
-What the hell was that? -it was Shu's turn to ask questions. He'd never heard of that thing.
-I've heard when somebody uses black magic and gets dead bodies, they can be reanimated to attack others. Or that sometimes evil people go to hell. Do you think maybe hell is wandering this world as a rotten corpse in your own tomb?
The thought frightened Shu.
-...Let's link hands again and not separate.
They walked a long corridor and found another mysterious stone. Somehow the light from the poison room still lit it. Shu could see more creatures in there. How would they get out?
The stone ahead read:
This poem is dedicated to the dearly departed members of the royal family.
The rising moon will eventually set, a newborn's life will fade. From moon to sun, from sun to moon. Give peaceful rest to the living dead.
Interesting, coming from a family of vampires. But wait, there was a sheet music below. Could it be another one of those songs?
-Let me try this...
Edgar felt his stomach turn around when Shu took out the violin but in all honesty he didn't think it could get much worse anymore.
What he felt with this new melody was warm though. It was like one of the days he had freshly cut the hay and lay on the new stacks; The way it felt to receive the glow of the sun bouncing off the lake after too many days of dark winter, feeling a gentle dusk on your back while fishing... he felt like of course they could, and would get out of here.
Shu felt like he'd eaten a great meal, and a nutritious one at that; he was energized and somehow in good spirits. And like he'd discover what was true and relevant as some type of light was being shed on his being.
As they were returning they noticed- the undead creatures were gone.
-Do ya think that song... it sounded like the sun; made those things scram? I'm pretty convinced magic exists now, whaddaya think?
-I'm almost sure of it. Let's go, and never return here.
Outside, it had somehow gone dark, although they could not have been in there more than an hour. Was there an eclipse today? Either way, they better hurry home, and not tell anybody where they were.
Shu returned to the palace and vowed to play the Sun's song near Reiji next night; his brother's spirit was as bitter as could be but he was sure he wasn't completely dead inside like those creatures, nor completely consumed by pretentiousness like the other kind of living dead. Or was he? He'd play the song within his earshot, and see what happens...

The forgotten songs - DL fanfic, part 1 of 2
Shu + Edgar/Yuma (as kids) and some Reiji fanfic oneshot
If you love Zelda OOT you will probably like this
Shu was sure the place was nearby, only a few more minutes to walk. It was still early morning by the time Edgar's village went out of his vampiric sight and earshot. Much longer than when it went out of Edgar's human ones.
However, he could still hear the birds in the pine trees and insects in the green fields of clover and green grass sprinkled with purple branduse flowers.
He also heard their creaking footsteps on the worn dirt road lined with a wooden, weathered makeshift fence that led there. Even if his skin burnt a little in the sun, he felt content.
There was nothing he'd rather do on a nice spring day than spending it with his best friend. Even instead of sleeping, like most vampires.
Said best friend was growing impatient; Shu had mentioned some type of mission, had brought a medium sized bag with a violin and seemingly random stuff, and Edgar was dying of curiosity.
-It's only five minutes from here, see that big sign at the gate? -Shu pointed to a wood plank with fading calligraphy on it on top of a rusty gate made of coiled metal posts. Seemed like if it had been well kept, it would be a fancy place.
-It says Gra... ve... y... yard? -Edgar laughed- We gonna loot a corpse, Shu?
But that was not exactly what Shu had in mind.
Sakamaki residence, Library, a few days ago
Shu had played a few songs for the manor staff to enjoy as a bribe in exchange for some peace, and entered the library in hopes of taking a nap, and have whoever found him think he passed out from too much studying.
His hopes were shattered when he heard a familiar voice that dripped venom to his left as soon as he closed the heavy door behind him.
-You merely play vulgar songs that commoners enjoy.
His younger brother, Reiji, glared his red gaze up at Shu from a pretentious-looking old art book.
Reiji was sitting on a chair and three thick warfare books to be able to read on the mahogany desk his father had left.
Shu narrowed his blue eyes and turned his back to go find the long daybed on the opposite side of the ample library, but Reiji stood up; it seemed he wasn't done picking a fight. Shu sighed and rolled his eyes to himself, not even turning to look at his younger brother.
-As if you would know about actual useful songs, real music passed down by our kind and kept secret for generations. -Reiji almost sounded like he wanted to share exciting new knowledge, but was frustrated he'd be uninterested- Then again, you would never bother with any of it, since you only want to sleep all night as if you were one of those humans...
He turned around.
-What songs do you mean?
Reiji smirked.
It smelled of incoming rain but it was still warm; it was too late to turn back now, either way.
The graveyard where the triplets's ancestors, Cordelia's forefathers, and the royal vampire families's remains laid was always a different kind of silent, as if not even ants dared set the wrong foot on that ground. It was always somehow cold, but not the kind of cold you felt on the skin, but in your core.
-So, ya have been here before?- Edgar asked, looking around; the ancient tombs with fading names and somewhat demonic-looking adornments were unsettling to him.
Sneaking in was a bit too easy for two kids who had no business in the house of the dead, like a funeral or so; but maybe nobody really wanted to keep an eye on the eerie stones with their overgrown herbs, wilting flowers and ivy curling around some of the graves.
The whole place gave the feeling like some type of ghost was going to jump at you; the kind that have a little lantern and sets things ablaze only for you to be accused of arson. He got a chill thinking of possible ghosts, and caught up to Shu fast.
-What kinda graveyard is this? There's normal graves, but some look like their owners worshiped the devil.
Shu laughed quietly,
-No, it's not devil worship; some people, especially the type of uh, aristocrats; like my family, believe that the animals that helped us, like bats, or sometimes dogs, can watch over our graves too, that's why you see some strange animal symbols on some.
-Whatta hell... bats? Why bats..? -Edgar made a face of confusion, quickly replaced by surprise and pointed
-Look at that big one!
At the very end of the graveyard, a lone, big stone, taller than Edgar, who was much taller than Shu, crept up and watched over the rest of the graves. Rain started to fall as they approached it.
It made it look more scary, but he was relieved the impact made Edgar forget about the bats, he'd said too much already, he should have said he didn't know. As much as he wanted to share his world with him. For his protection he shouldn't. He'd be more careful.
-That must be it... -Shu quickened the pace- the ancestors of my half brothers must be buried there.
The rain increased as Edgar watched from a safe distance; the inscription on the grave read only read:
Royal Family
The family crest was beneath the sign.
Immortals who had somehow died. Or did they? Shu took out his violin, and a few breaths.
Edgar watched Shu taking out the violin and then he noticed something that made him a little scared.
There was something behind the grave. A little upward. The rocky mountain dead end behind it had a hole where one could easily set a camp if there was some way to get up there. It had a wooden fence blocking it, but even just looking at it made Edgar's stomach do something and his instinct say TURN BACK NOW.
There was something evil in there, lurking deep within that mountain, dormant. He couldn't put his finger on it but it was so close to this grave he wondered what kind of family the half-brothers's mother's was. Not Shu's family, though... right?
The thought vanished when Shu started playing music. The melody even made him forget about the potential ghosts, the rain, the cold and the hole behind the grave. He felt soothed and reassured, as if some kind of good spell had fallen on him.
A few seconds after Shu finished, he turned around and shouted,
-RUN, HIDE BEHIND THAT STONE!
And three seconds later lightning struck and destroyed the royal family grave; a tunnel-like hole gaped at them instead when they came out of their hiding spot.

-Shu! -Edgar panted- What the hell just happened?!
Edgar looked angry and scared. Shu could maybe admit some things, he didn't want to scare him away... He couldn't leave this unexplained for him to conclude he'd do this to him.
-I wanted to see if it was real, the magic melodies. If it wasn't just Reiji making it all up. I wanted my music to be good for something.
Edgar looked at him in awe with an open mouth. More information seemed to be needed.
-Reiji, my real brother, spoke to me about some ancient melodies passed down by ancient eh, aristocrat families; but it seems he only got to recover this one from my half brother Kanato; he loves music with a strange passion. I don't know how either of them got it but, the only way to test this was something ancient of theirs; the only possible spot I knew how to get to was this tomb, I never thought lightning would strike, I'm so sorry Edgar!
Shu looked like he was about to cry. Edgar didn't think anyone would summon lightning to the spot they were standing on on purpose.
-No prob, it was crazy but I don' think ya knew that was gonna happen! ...How did you know we should hide?
-...I... just instinct. I don't know.
Shu sensed it but Edgar was getting dangerously close to knowing he wasn't like him. He fell silent, and sad.
...
Thunder rumbled and the rain didn't seem like it would stop soon. They seemed to be rooted on the spot, and Edgar didn't know why Shu suddenly seemed sad again. Sometimes he made that face out of nowhere. But he had an idea, this could still be fun!
-...What do we do now? We run for cover from the rain down there?
Edgar said with a complicit smile. They were already soaked but, whatever, he just wanted him to stop being sad.
-The lightning even made little stairs, it would be rude not to go in!
Shu returned the smile.
Both laughed and entered the grave like curious, not so tuned in to danger children they were, regardless of species.

Sakamaki Mansion in Real Life (HCS)
Front Entrance

A completely isolated and hidden Manor
Archers of land
The forest surrounds it.
Miles away from town.
This home is very old, in a drama cd I believe Reiji stated that something (I think it was a couch) a piece of furniture was gifted to them in the 1800s? I believe that was the year. Overall if the item was giften then that would mean that the house is older or just as old. ( I don't remember all the details I could be wrong but I know the house is over 100 years old.)
Rose Garden + Courtyard

An endless rose garden built into a maze
Statues of beautiful feminine figures, who not surprisingly were once brides as well.
Another hobby of Kanatos when using magic
Have a cemetery of their own, some bodies were buried but they have no headstones.
They also have a Mausoleum in the show if no one noticed. It's where Shu was reading a book in S1.
Interior

a grand staircase
it has a lot of stairs and many rooms such as a music room, library, game room, etc.
empty but grand long halls.
very easy to get lost
There rooms are all spread out from each other.
Underground

If you've played the games or read the game translations you obviously know about the dungeon and torture rooms which exhisted.
In the anime you can also see that there are hidden tunnels in the manor as well.
Some with water running through them
This is where some dirty work has been done in the past.
I'm also not surprised if brides are brought here as punishment.

As badass creepy horror movie scenes Laito has, and the sharp intuition and strategic capacity+creativity, it is the vulnerable scenes an the ones in which he is quite objectively a wimp that make him such an interesting character
