The State of Fanfiction in the JRWI community

Sorry if this becomes a rant, I feel more comfortable speaking about it here plus the actual problem does tend to stem from this site.

A lot of the Twitter side of the JRWI fandom is finally realising that in the fic space on AO3, which is the main place a lot of people look for JRWI fics at least to my knowledge, the Suckening part of the fic space is extremely overrun with inappropriate content. And I'm not talking about blood or gore or certain serious topics, I'm talking about sexual content, twincest, and non/con, you know proshipper stuff.

I'm well aware that stuff like that in a fandom is inevitable, especially on AO3 of all sites. However considering that at least 1/4 to 1/3 of the fics under the Suckening campaign tag include that content it definitely presents as at least a bit of a problem. I had a look through the tag myself and on the first two pages alone 14/40 of the fics involved this inappropriate content.

Now with the Twitter being a lot more vocal, I have observed a lot of the fic writers tend to congregate here, especially the problem ones. To give you an idea of what some of the people are like, one of these fic writers is the same person who tried to organise that proshipper BITB zine (funny that there tends to be an overlap between those two fanbases), who was found to write and post about twincest and non/con as well as being involved in servers where people would age down characters to make the ships even more problematic. This person also had/was part of a 'JRWI anti-censorship' discord server where people would create and share more content like this.

Granted as wrong as it is at least the server means it's technically kinda private and out of the public's way, but considering there were minors found in these servers, (they also had a non-jrwi related one and in none of the servers did they check for your age), and that it used to be openly displayed on their profile prior to being called out, it's definitely very concerning that minors were being invited into these spaces in the first place. On top of that one of the mods for that server is also one of these fic writers filling the fic space with proshipper content, which does lead me to believe a lot of these people making this stuff are all mutuals and do share a space where this content is openly encouraged.

I'm saying all this just to show an example of the kind of people who are making this content, and that it's actually a lot deeper of a problem then just "oh no my fics are all gross!" I've seen people saying they now avoid looking for Suckening fics at all because there is just this overabundance of proshipper content for the fics of that campaign.

I think because of the overall fandom attitude towards dealing with problems in the fandom it's allowed for harmful people like this to think it's acceptable to just keep making stuff like this. I wish there was a way to get that content taken down but it seems one of the few things that can be done is creating a block list so that people know who to avoid, just as a way of saying "Hey if you make/consume this content you're not welcome here."

To end this on a positive note there is a much more fun way to try and help against this problem. It might be just putting a band-aid over it, but to the fic writers who've had any temptation or ideas to write fics for the Suckening, now is the perfect time! If we wanna see less of this problematic content and create a healthy fanfic ecosystem, the place needs to be filled with more fics! Whether you think you're good at writing or not, or wanna write something cute, funny, heartwrenching, now is your chance to help.

Write down your ideas in the comments or reblogs for other people to see. I do hope this post reaches people since unfortunately the Tumblr and Twitter sides of the community tend to be pretty separated, and I think it's important for people this side to be aware when there's problems happening.
