Day 5: Worth Surviving For | I Love You

Rating: Teen Characters: Kakashi/Obito, Rin Tags: Soulmate AU, Skin Conditions, Skin-Writing, Team Bonding, Hurt/Comfort, Friendship, Telepathic Bonds, Kannabi Bridge, Angst with a Happy Ending Warnings: Canon-Typical Violence Summary: Kakashi's tether to his soulmate is a skin-writing bond. This means that his soulmate's thoughts appear as ink on his skin, and the closer their bond gets, the more the ink spreads. The problem is that every word shared through their bond is an insult, and even though Kakashi has no interest in finding his soulmate, nothing short of death can sever their ties. He met his bonded, they don't like him, and now, he has to live with that. OR: Kakashi and Obito are soulmates. Neither of them knows, but maybe they should.

👻 What is your wildest headcanon?

I'm not sure?? I'm not very attached to my headcanons and will throw them away when it's convenient. Lately I've been partial to the headcanon that Minato had no special attachment to his students, which I know can be... divisive, let's say. I love when he treats his team 7 like family, but I'm also very fond of the idea that, to him, they were just soldiers he needed to train up for Konoha's future. It kind of gives Kakashi's "they're no longer your students, they're my soldiers" line a new perspective, and makes Minato's decision to throw this poor traumatized child into ANBU a little more understandable (if still very alarming).

I also like headcanoning that Obito was part Senju, and that was part of why he was such a black sheep within the Uchiha clan, but I don't think that's all unique an idea. I like the idea that mokuton is something that can be learned by descendants of both bloodlines.

I hope what I wrote makes sense, I'm still very woo-woo from... everything.

🤖 Are non-fandom friends aware that you write fanfic?

My oldest friends are, like childhood friends who I still spend time with, and I think that's it? It doesn't come up in conversation really. But no one I know irl has read my writing, original or fanfic, other than my wife.

✍️ What’s your ideal writing setup?

In bed with good back support, noise-cancelling headphones on, with coffee on the nightstand. I have a lap desk that I use whenever I'm working away from a table, and it's such a game changer. It has a built-in mouse pad (that actually works well, since some models are terrible) and a slot for my phone, so I can easily look up anything I need to while keeping my doc on screen. Keeping non-writing tabs closed on my laptop helps me stay focused. My lamp also has a shelf for my ipad, which I like having near to take art breaks if I've been writing for a while and need to switch things up.

This would preferably be when the wife is out walking the dogs and Howl, our hellspawn mini aussie, isn't around to squeak his toys, stare at me for uncomfortable lengths of time, or steal whatever he can reach off the nightstand and take it apart with his teeth. I love him, but it's like having a high-energy toddler whose battery is always full. And he talks back! Not very good for writing. (I hate that he's the cutest friggin thing in the world on top of it all.)

💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?

I'm not sure?? It changes depending on what I've recently worked on. I have the memory of a goldfish. Currently, I'm having a lot of fun working on Change Your Heart or Die and Moon in the Day. Oh, and Lunar Phase. Even if writing chapter 5 is softly killing me.

Overall, probably Sweet Misery for sentimental reasons.

🚀 Do you like to outline your fic first or create as you go?

Depends on the fic! Quiet Revolutions was fully plotted out before I started writing it, though it was vague enough to give me wiggle room if I wanted to add/change things. But Kintsugi was very much "I want to do this trope and I don't care where it goes." Usually, I'll come up with a vague idea of where I want a story to end regardless of how I start it, but starting it is always up in the air.

💥 What is one canon thing that you wish you could change?

Ummm probably Obito's death? Not because I don't like when my favs die (most of them are very dead, actually, because no matter what fandom I'm in, this is my curse) but because I don't think death equals atonement. My most hated trope is the villain turning good and then dying.

That, or the whole Kaguya thing. Just. All of it. Let Madara be the final villain he was meant to be.

3. Tell me about one of your fics you think is underrated/underappreciated.

7. Is there a character or ship you'd love to write for, but haven't yet?

3. I'm not sure? It's hard to know what stories people read most, or what they think about them, so I can only judge based off engagement. Maybe the Other Side series? It's about a curse called the blight that infects everything it touches and consumes it. If humans are infected, they lose their sense of self. Sakumo sets out with a group of hunters one day, and his companions return without him, saying he died. Years later, Kakashi is made a hunter and joins an expedition, but ends up separated from his group and injured. He's found by Sakumo, who is infected, and neither recognize each other. It's about them learning to co-exist, essentially.

The sequel takes place years later, when Kakashi gets infected and orders his companions to burn him before he loses himself. They try to drown him in a marsh instead, where he's found by a witch (Obito), who makes a pact with him to slow the spread of the blight. Because Kakashi's already lost parts of himself to the curse, the story was intended to retroactively fill in the blanks between the first fic and the sequel as he tries to recover. I posted it as a Halloween oneshot with the intent of expanding it to about 5 chapters, but when I try to work on it, I feel a bit guilty that I'm not working on other stories that have more interest, so I haven't progressed far on it.... 😅

7. Oh yeah. So many. Marcille/Falin, Nami/Vivi, Kushina/Mikoto, Sakura/Ino... I'm noticing a pattern 🤔 I usually just can't think of plots for characters I'm not hyper-fixated on, so I tend not to write them. But that doesn't mean I don't want to.

24. What are some of your favourite tropes?

This is probably pretty obvious from my fics, but... Alternate universes, time/dimension travel, secret/hidden identity, anything fantasy/supernatural, character studies, doppelgangers, hurt/comfort... should probably include omegaverse too, considering how many I wrote lol.

43. What keeps you motivated when working on a long project?

Back when I used to only write a few fics at a time, when my motivation waned, I stopped writing altogether. I think I disappeared for a year or 2 from the Naruto fandom? These days, I'm less strict about my writing, and let myself start something new when I have the urge. It keeps me writing long enough to cycle back and work on the older ongoing stories, too. I try to be less hard on myself, because at the end of the day, I'm just doing this for fun.

When I'm about to start a new chapter for a fic, I'll go back and read comments to get me pumped to work on it, too! Being reminded that there are other people who would be happy if I worked on that story really helps get me in the right headspace ❤️

OR: Obito has protected the Hatake heir for most of his life, and won't stop now.
