An expert report warns: Climate change causes massive damage to health. Experts explain what needs to be done.
Tumblr media
Economy, nature, harvests, temperatures - climate change has an impact on many areas of life. Protecting the climate does not only mean protecting society from the serious consequences of climate change. Rising temperatures, more intense extreme weather and shrinking glaciers will make everyday life much more difficult for mankind in the future.
This is the conclusion of a comprehensive report by „The Lancet Countdown“, a consortium of some 120 experts from the World Health Organization and various universities.
Most affected by climate change: Children.
A child born today is more likely to experience forest fires, floods, droughts and storms than previous generations. Compared to the period 2001-2004, the number of people exposed to forest fires and their consequences has recently increased in 152 countries worldwide, according to the Lancet research group.
If CO2 emissions continue as before, a child born today will live on average in a four-degree warmer world on its 71st birthday.
For years, more and more people have had to endure extreme heat for several days a year. This can be particularly dangerous for children. Young people cannot regulate their body temperature as well as healthy adults. The hotter it is, the more likely a fatal heat stroke is.
In addition, rising temperatures lead to crop failures, as the Lancet Report shows. Studies show that harvests will continue to decrease with every degree Celsius of global warming. Food crises are an expected consequence, because there will be less food for more and more people. Today, more than 800 million people are already malnourished. As children grow up, they depend on a balanced diet, and malnutrition can have fatal consequences.
Climate change also favours the spread of pathogens in Europe and North America, which have so far mainly caused infections in the tropics. Many of these tropical diseases affect children much harder than adults, such as malaria, diarrhoeal diseases and dengue fever.
The authors' demand:
The authors therefore call for a rapid and complete renunciation of coal-fired power worldwide. In addition, as already promised, the rich countries would really have to give the poorer ones 100 billion dollars in climate support annually from 2020. At the same time, public transport, walking and cycling should be promoted, for example with more cycle paths. In order to help people damaged by global warming, investments must also be made in health systems.
If we can prevent global warming were limited to 1.5 degrees - as desired by the Paris Climate Agreement - and the promises made by the countries were kept, things would look different, according to the researchers. A child in England could then experience the phase-out of coal at the age of six, in France at the age of 21 the farewell of petrol and diesel cars. All those born today worldwide could experience at the age of 31 that only as much CO2 is produced as can be absorbed by nature or by technical means. At the same time, the air could be cleaner and the infrastructure better.
Overall, the report shows that the consequences of global warming are already affecting millions of people's health in many parts of the world and that something needs to change.

Influencer advises beauty products on Instagram. A dermatologist explains, why they are not effective and healthy.
Tumblr media
Look young, pretty and wrinkle-free - the business with beauty is a billion-dollar market.
Beautiful lips in minutes, lose weight with tea, wrinkle-free skin in one month and full splendour of hair with gummy bears! The promises of the beauty industry are big - and they are even more impressive as soon as the expensive products are advertised in social media.
In their Instagram stories, influencers talk about products from suppliers they’re being payed from. Their followers can buy the presented cosmetic articles directly via linking to the respective supplier, which often seems „more favorably“, since a suitable discount coupon is provided equally.
One of the best known representatives is Kim Kardashian. She introduced her 151 million followers the hair vitamin gummy bears.
And this kind of marketing works. An ODM Group study found that 74% of consumers rely on social networks to help with their purchasing decisions. Other studies have backed this up. According to a Hubspot report, 71% of consumers are more likely to make purchases based on social media referrals.
But how effective and healthy are the beauty products that the influencers recommend?
Dermatologist Dr. Yael Adler (46) from Berlin has examined a number of cosmetic articles that are prominently presented on the photo platform by various influencers.
Very popular are hair vitamins as gummy bears. The „SugarBearHair“ are supposed to support the beautiful hair – for 30 dollars per month. According to the packaging, they contain biotin, various vitamins and sugar. According to the doctor, it is important to find the exact reason for problems such as hair loss at the doctors. This can be due to iron deficiency, thyroid disease, hormone disorder or the wrong contraceptive pill. She advises against experimenting on her own: "additives such as sugar makes you fat, promotes caries and saccharification in the tissues. Dyes can cause allergies and intolerances. And this is also the case with these gummy bears - two bears receive a cube of sugar and dyes are also preserved.
Slimming drinks like "quickcap" are strongly promoted too – they cost 20 dollars per week. Dr. Yael Adler says: "If you want to lose weight, you often have to struggle with feelings of hunger. Many products want to suppress this effectively. Unfortunately, this only works with real appetite suppressants, which can be harmful to health. That's why you should never take them.“
Immediately voluminous lips promises „SecretLips“: A small titanium needle roller is used to drive over the lips, after which the „Boosting Serum“ is applied. The set costs 125 dollars. If you roll over your lips with a small needle roller, you cause minor injuries. The body wants to repair this with an inflammation and brings healing water into the lips, so you have the swelling and a short-term puffing effect. But this does not last. Doctor Adler also warns against this product: „There is a risk that we will work bacteria into the skin, that is, the lips will develop bacterial inflammations or an existing herpes will spread by rolling over. And allergens that irritate the body can enter the lip through the serum ingredients.“
As an anti-aging measure, Instagram offers 30 Dollar phototherapy masks that should restore skin vitality through natural light. Irregular skin, enlarged pores and inflammations should be treated quickly. Yael Adler: „It is true that you can work with different wavelengths of light on the skin.  There are professional devices with sufficient energy to allow light to penetrate the skin, fight inflammation or stimulate collagen. Light masks that can be bought freely on the Internet can not do that.“
Conclusion: Yael Adler advises against all these products. Instead, it is better to focus on prevention: a healthy diet throughout one's life, doing sports, ageing factors such as smoking too much, alcohol, the sun and solar energy. Sleeping a lot, avoiding a little fine dust. In addition she recommends: A glass carrot juice per day with a drop oil to drink. This turns the skin orange from the inside, after four weeks you can see the effect. And the great thing is: it prolongs the skin's own protection by a factor of two to three.
