The thing that really gets to my heart about how Laiosâs autism is portrayed in his conflict with Toshiro is that his pain is centered and sympathized with.
How many dozens, hundreds of stories have we gotten about that obnoxious side character who just wonât take the hint and get lost, plaguing the main character who is never up front about their actual feelings but weâre supposed to relate to? How itâs played for humor half the time, a lighthearted burden on the main to make them roll their eyes before the Big Challenges of their story, with no thought to the pain and loss of the side character investing so much emotion into caring for someone who finds them a nuisance?
I think itâs even more poignant that Ryoko Kui is writing from a Japanese perspective that puts Toshidoâs approach even more in the default, culturally enforced norm, but still asks âwhat about the feelings of the person who doesnât have that all-important knack for âreading the roomâ and picking up on all those invisible messages never said aloud?â and encourages us to care
The old school lack of transparency on tumblr is amazing because you assume the people you follow must all be equivalent to you and then you see someone write âI brought my youngest to college todayâ and someone else write âmy mom wouldnât let me listen to Ariana Grande when I was a kidâ and then your head explodes
i feel like a lot of the 'i hate kids' crowd would be more tolerant if they understood that due to a kid's limited experience of the world that 4 hour flight might just be the longest they've ever had to sit still for or that trapped finger might literally be the most pain they've ever felt in their short life or they might not have ever seen a person with pink hair ever so of course they want to touch it or nobody's told them yet that they can't run around the museum and they only just learned cheetahs are the fastest animals so of course they want to put that to the test. how were they supposed to know etc etc.
Ive said this before but swear the biggest skill to learn as an adult is how to resist high-pressure sales tactics. You do NOT have to answer questions with anything other than "Sorry I'm not interested." No matter how nice they are or no matter how many follow up questions they ask or even how agitated they get when you stand your ground. Just keep saying I'm not interested. Don't answer their questions. Don't give them an opening to try to push back on your reasons. Be a fucking brick wall of I'm not interested.
