It's kinda funny that they cut superheroes from the American release of Rocky Horror for "being too depressing", even though right before that scene 3 people were killed. And before THAT, a guy was killed with an ice pick, cannibalized, and displayed with his guts out under the table.
But nooo, a scene about how the characters will never be the same again is just too sad.

The REAL ending of Rocky Horror Picture Show being cut from the American version is a fucking tragedy that I as an American will never forgive.
If you're American and you don't know about "superheroes" watch this RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!

The Exorcist franchise is getting a makeover following the polarizing response to last year’s The Exorcist: Believer.
Horror maestro Mike Flanagan will write, direct and produce what Blumhouse is describing as a “radical new take” on the franchise, one that will be set in the Exorcist universe but not a sequel to Believer.

the question about the rocky horror picture show isnt "what the hell is happening?"
The real question is "how did so many bisexuals manage to get stuck in a gothic castle?"

I don’t trust Disney or anyone they would hire to create a truly subversive movie remake/continuation whatever of Rocky horror.
They would probably sanitise the gay experience and the LGBTQIA+ community and create a product for the masses instead of challenging both queer and straight people the way the original did.
Because I think the original Rocky horror is a movie that can challenge people and can make people feel uncomfortable. And it’s good that not every piece of art should make people feel comfortable queer or straight. That’s what makes it timeless.
Honestly, sometimes I wonder if it’s even possible to make a remake of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show '' that's both actually good and also actually a remake. Because I’m usually of the opinion that everything can be remade. You know, originality is an illusion, reinterpretation is a valuable tool of artistic expression, holy shit two cakes and all that jazz. I usually don’t mind the basic concept of remakes as much as a lot of other people seem to. I think they can be a valid way for a new creator to put their own spin on a work of art, or interact with the way it might change with the changing times. Even if it’s clear that the executives greenlighting these things only see them as empty ways to retain brand awareness… I mean, this is how they look at any piece of cinema that goes through their studios. They are executives, after all.
But Rocky Horror is already an actually very meta sort of work. The musical numbers and the campy acting and the narrator and the goofy editing transitions all deliberately call attention to its own artificiality and the fact that it is a work of fiction. It is already a work of nostalgic tribute to classic horror and cheesy sci-fi reinvented via the cultural lens of then-modern times. One of its main themes is about the joy of temporary escape from mainstream heteronormative society via the joy of late night horror movies. And…
I just don’t know how you make an actual remake with an actual intention to both reinterpret the original work and honestly engage with its themes, without ending up with a work that at least kinda explores, y’know, the way times have changed between the 1970’s and the current era, and the way RHPS is now itself an item of horror-sci-fi nostalgia for a period long-past, and it’s important but complicated place in queer culture and the fact that it is now the Icon of midnight screenings as a Dionysian celebration and escape.
And I feel like if you’re gonna really engage with these themes, on the same level the original RHPS engaged with it's themes... you’re not gonna make the kind of movie that can incorporate every single quotable line or keep all the songs exactly as they were and there’s a pretty good chance you’re gonna end up with a movie that’s less of a “RHPS Remake” and more of a “RHPS Response”.

Ever think about how Janet was able to break free from the patriarchal system for one night and she used that time to explore herself. And how she at the end of the movie is forced back into the conservative society she came from.

I Wouldn't Exist If Not For Tim Curry
Tumblr media
In the 80's, my parents were both long haired metal heads. My dad was in a recurring Bay Area shadowcast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and he played Frank-N-Furter every other weekend. My mom was pleasantly surprised to find that the man in black lingerie and heels that was chasing and spanking a man in a gold speedo liked women, and that's why I exist now, lol.
My dad actually got to perform a scene at one of the anniversary events, and he met Tim Curry and a few other cast members! There's a picture of my mom and dad in front of the actual coffin clock from the movie when she was pregnant with me!
The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a big part of my consciousness growing up, and I probably shouldn't have seen it at six years old 😅 I was lucky enough to be in the play two years in a row when I was 15 and 16 (again, probably shouldn't have been in that so young, but 🤷🏼‍♀️). I still have my script with all the rehearsal and choreography notes in it, and it makes me so happy every time I flip through it!
Anyways, I owe my literal existence to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and it'll always carry wholesome, family memories for me. Thank you for my life, Tim Curry!!!!!!
And remember, friends:
"Don't Dream It, Be It!" 💋
