Basic Instinict 1992
At 20 years old I watched the classic Basic Instinct from 1992 (2024). I had studied it once in Portuguese literature. I remembered it, for its iconic underwear scene and watched it basically because of that. After watching it I came to the conclusion that it is the most artful masterpiece known to man. I keep referring to the main character Catherine as the original womaninmaledominatedfields. I didn't quite know what to expect of the movie but I was quite surprised by her character.
"Are you sad that he is dead?"
"yes, I quite liked fucking him."
So crude. Something one can only imagine a man would say, even her sexual orientation, "bisexual" with an inclination for big breasted blondes that look like her. It is a mixture between psychopathy and narcisism, typically reserved for male character such as Patrick Bateman, I questioned the whole movie if she ever really love Nick or if it was always pure manipulation.
I read somewhere that the reason why Catherine decided to spare Nick was because he was completely submissive, he agreed with absolutely everything that she did/said. She was actually about to kill him when he mentioned "the rugrats" that they were going to have in the future, she mentions hating them and he decides he doesn't want or need them. She spares him.
At the end of the movie I was left dazed and confused, wasn't even fully quite sure if Catherine was the killer or not, I read something that absolotely blew my mind. Apparently the reason for all the explicit sex scenes is to invoke this paralel between what Catherine is trying to do to Nick and the Director is doing with the spectator/viewer. It is this constant tug of war of confusion. Everytime we (he) gets close to the truth, Catherine distracts him with sex, which leaves us as dumbfounded if not more as the killer cop.
I thought it was absolutely genius, putting the spectator in the same ballpark as one of the main characters, we too have fallen prey to Catherines charms and are not quite sure what the facts are, even when they are laying right in front of us, however, what is also laying in front of us is her nude body which is what we as spectators and Nick (the cop) choose to focus on.
I also checked out the date of the movie and believed it was quite revolutionary for the time. In the late 90s the Iconic Samantha Jones came along who reminds me of a hip Manhattan version of Catherine. Sexually liberated, financially independent, unapolagetically herself, and incredibly intelligent.
This is a new string of maneaters whose power doesn't simply rely on their looks, they have brains. Catherine is a psychology and literature major with her very own published book. Samantha owns her PR firms and represents the hottest clients. Neither of them need men to pay for their extravanagzas even though they often do.
Despite all this, these two blonde bombshells are never painted as cold, in the movie when Roxy dies we see Catherine really open up and begin to be vulnerable.
"Everybody that gets close to me dies/leaves"
Her parents, her one true love, could her merciless killings be a way for her to control the narrative, she controls the death.
At the end of the movie she tells Nick that she is done with him, his character is dead. That is exactly what she does with her ex lovers in real life. As soon as shes done with them not only does she kill off the character, but also the real person.
In her story all the people who love her end up dying in horrible tragic ways, thus leaving her.
In her story not only does she control who dies, she also never gets attached to them and controls the form of death which is actually rather poetic, a very Femme Fatale MO.
The most entertaining part about Catherines character is that she likes to tease the police. She enjoys showing off her skill and intelligence, as does Samantha.
Another thing I noticed upon the second rewatch of the movie was the purposeful noticable parallels between Nick and Catherine. The interrogation scene, everything down to the ice pick. Nick was so submissive that not only was he becoming fond of Catherie, he was actually becoming her.
On top of that, Nick became a much more interesting character once he started following in the footseps of Catherine, more manly, more badass.
"What, are you going to write me up for smoking?"
I particulary enjoy how the director plays with the stereotypes of nasculinity and femininity by often switching them up.
This could also be an inadvertent and subconcious way of implying that men are superior but in a very subtle way.
All the same I believe it is an absolute masterpiece, whether it is purposeful or not, I consider it my new cult classic feminist favorite.

NETFLIX
I think the limited series of "DON'T **** WITH CATS" and the Cecil Hotel one changed me forever, I might be forever traumatized. They should put better warnings on these things.
