Today one of my students asked me if enslaved women received maternity leave. And I answered it...without making them feel wrong or stupid for asking. But it really makes me understand why there's such a lack of empathy or understanding when it comes to race issues. A lot of people have no idea what went on during slavery.

For example, today my class learned that FIFTY percent of Black infants born to enslaved mothers passed away before their first birthday mostly due to malnourishment.
