T-then - why. And what.
‘Haha.’
‘Nope.’

( don’t do it, gaius. )
Or what?
Don’t push it.

It’s got a good atmosphere and some of the best prices in the area.
( he slurps out of his drink, through a multi-coloured straw. )
And they make a terrific citrus smoothie. My name is Gaius.
( a hand extends. )
Yeah, th-the owner’s my b-b-best friend. You like it he-here?

horrifia.
-- I know you.
( he doesn’t; it’s a turn of phrase, a slip of the tongue. )
Or - sort of. You know the owner. I’ve seen you in here a lot.

So -- what,
( dabbing blood off a split lip with an exaggerated wince, ) you’re magic, then?
‘Sorry, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Shun the non-believer. Make the non-believer punch himself in the face.’

I wouldn’t think so. I would hope not.
( he has the air of someone who’s panicking slightly and probably panics at
all times - which is what he is and what he does. he draws in big gulps of air
between stuttering, slowing tears. )
If you were heartless and still here it would probably
mean you were going to rob me.
( horrified beat. )
N-not that I think you’re going to rob me,
I mean e-entirely the opposite of such --
oh, goodness. she’s seen worse pictures but she’s seen prettier. gingerly, wanda’s fingers dance over the ridge of gaius’ shoulders, just short of giving him a hearty pat on the back. it’s a light touch, but sincere.
“it’s alright,” she mutters, drawling accent, holding the last tissue in front of his face regardless of his assurances. wanda offers a smile. it’s the only thing she has left to give him. “i am not heartless.”

( startled laugh. pleasant smile. )
So not a lot then. It must be terrible.
( pleasantly sarcastic - he’s joking, of course. mostly. )
-- hobbies, then.
“Sounds fascinating,” does it? actually, it does, “biology especially.”
And now it’s her turn to share; sometimes this is her favourite part of meeting someone new- I do nothing. Nothing at all, what do you think of that? It’s not as though she’s been allowed a choice.
“I’m an heiress. So, well, you can imagine..”

( she leads him. she always has. he has always let her. was there ever a time that she
didn’t captivate him? is it terrible to think that he might let her doom the world over
and again if she wanted? if she asked? but she doesn’t ask, she doesn’t want.
neither of them are in that place anymore. she wants this. with the rest of them. and
he wants her, and the rest of them. )
I saw them. Yesterday. The first seedlings through the earth.
( he doesn’t drag heels. keeps up. he used to lag behind, fear or reluctance or both.
he keeps up. there’s still the nervous, pitched up edge to his voice sometimes, hard
to let go of even around caprica. sometimes he feels stupid for voicing his thoughts.
he’s not a monotheistic cult leader anymore, he’s not a president, he’s not even a
scientist. there is no soap box. nothing but him and her and god, sometimes. )
It feels good to create - do you know what I mean?
Come on. The rain.
(she tugs at his arm, still smiling. sometimes it’s astounding how much he’s
changed since the first time they met, but she’s changed, too. who would
have thought that in the end, it would still be them? changed but together.
and that is how they walk– together, hand-in-hand as the first drops of rain
begin to fall.)
When the crops come in, we won’t have to take this walks as often.

( if only gaius had it in him to be calculating; his expression is cold but it wavers,
his throat tight, eyebrows pinched - voice a little higher than it needs to be - )
Did I hit a nerve?
Don’t you have a harem to go back to?

WHY WOULD YOU MAKE ME DO THAT AND HOW
This motherfucker.
Sigh. She grabs his hand again, squeezes it once as a kind of preemptive apology. ‘Punch yourself in the face.’

What kind of trick is that? How did you do that?
‘That’s my party trick.’ He’s like a wounded, extremely confused deer. A wounded, extremely confused deer who just blew a raspberry for no reason. Adorable.

A few things, actually. I primarily work in computer science, now --
but I have some expertise in the medical and biological fields as well.
( no big deal. )
What do you do?
“And you. A doctor, lovely. What kind of doctor are you?”
She doesn’t have faith in the title, but he’s given her champagne, so she’s feeling generous. Smiles and tilts her head, like she’s ready to listen.

( tiny voice from a tiny crying man.
he presses the kleenex under his eyes, against his nose. gulps in air. )
That’s fine. I’m fine. I’ll be fine.
( it’s a bit of a horror story when he looks up - you know, blotchy skin,
big eyes, red nose. )
You’re r-really very kind for sitting with me.
starter call | anotherflood
she hands him another kleenex almost mechanically. a practiced gesture, after the past few minutes. at least his blubbering has quietened. wanda’s nudge is light, crossing her fingers (both metaphorically and literally) that gaius won’t let out another sob at her bit of bad news.
“i’m running out of tissues.”
