There'll be a moment when you realise you're 27 when yesterday you were just 17; and you wouldn't be able to tell how a decade passed away and your life got divided into before and afters. The fury of youth will subdue and nothing will really change but everything will feel different when you look at old photographs and blurry videos taken on cheap mobile phones. Scents will remind you of childhood and certain friends you don't talk to anymore, hangouts will become reunions and mom's burnt pie will become the best food you ever had. And I know on some days you won't be able to show anything of those 10 years but I hope you remember to breathe, and let go of the knot in your chest. I hope you go out in the sun and live a little, because tomorrow is 37.

He asked me when I fell in love with him and I knew it sounded dramatic to say the moment I saw him, so I told him this story of my grandma who had Alzheimer's- she forgot her name and the words for fruit and food, she forgot her address and how to use the washroom, all her life lost to the disease. The only thing she remembered was her son's name and when that began to fade, the one thing she always remembered was that she loved him, even in illness, even in insanity. She saw this 6 foot 2 man with a scrubby beard and she didn't know him but she said she trusted him, she asked him to hold her hand when she died. When does memory end and love begin? All I know is- she loved him before she remembered him.

ayanokouji is such a funny main character. everyone thinks that something's up with him and he insists that there isn't and he's just a normal boring useless white boy with a basic white boy face, but he is so jacked for no apparent reason. the first time he takes his shirt off, suzune instantly questions the fact that his arms are ripped and he doesn't even try to deny it. the best excuse he can come up with is "i didn't do sports in middle school because i'm boring." the student council president tried to fight him one time and couldn't even land a single hit on him, and his excuse that time was "i do piano and calligraphy," which has nothing to do with being absolutely ripped for a high schooler. he even has a six pack.

i think the reason why i love how yuki and tohru end up in their relationships, with machi and kyo respectively, is that they find in these people the things that they couldn’t really get from each other: tohru needs someone who’s easy to read, and yuki needs someone who can easily read him.

yuki’s personality and self-confidence grows a lot, but it’s still in his nature to be more private with his emotions, in part due to still growing through his childhood trauma. while he does get more comfortable with expressing how he feels, it’s never quite at the same level as kyo’s way of expressing himself, which tends to be rather open both physically and verbally (to a fault at times). though being emotionally private is normal and usually comfortable for him, everyone’s high esteem of yuki isolates him in a way where that privacy, no matter how much he’s grown by the end of the series, can be difficult to deal with – especially since he desperately wants to have actual friends who see him for who he is. 

this isn’t to say that tohru doesn’t see him for who he is, but she tends to struggle with people not being forward with how they feel. she frets a lot over what they might be thinking if she notices that they’re even slightly off, gets into spirals where she thinks she’s at fault, and just gets anxious over the prospect of unknowing in general. (i think this goes hand-in-hand with the fact that she, too, struggles with being forward with her actual emotions, wants, and needs). that forwardness isn’t something that yuki is able to give her, at least not by the end of the story. his emotional privacy, combined with his long-running reluctance to face his true feelings about her and talk to her about them, ends up keeping her in the dark.  

kyo and machi fill these needs with ease. even before kyo finally crosses the bridge of telling tohru the truth about his past with her mother (something that had heavily hampered his romantic pursuit of her), he’s her confidant. even though he can be awkward in how he expresses himself, she trusts the fact that he’s being genuine with her. there’s very little guessing involved. she knows he’s honest, even when he fumbles. a major part of their development, even before they realize they’re in love, is that kyo offers a path for tohru to be more honest with her emotions. she learns from him. (again, not to say that yuki isn’t honest with her, but they’re essentially on the same playing field when it comes to expressing themselves. they both hold back, which makes it hard to encourage each other to open up. maybe they see it as being kind of hypocritical). 

machi, on the other hand, sees through yuki like glass from the get go. she’s unfazed by the popular consensus that he’s princely and all that – she sees that he’s lonely, and gets a grasp of him faster than anyone has before, even before she really befriends him. this opens up a new path for him, as this is the first person in his life who just kind of gets him. there isn’t a reluctance to let her in (remember that he was going to reveal the truth about the curse to her, until it suddenly broke), but she’s not hurried to figure him out, because she doesn’t see him as a big mystery. there’s an unspoken understanding between them that puts yuki at ease. this doesn’t really exist between him and tohru.

of course, it’s because of tohru’s role in his life, and his acceptance of that role, that he feels able to pursue machi romantically. though tohru had to unlearn her preconceived notions of him, she did offer the path for him to be as accepting of himself as she was of him. accepting himself, and the curse, gave him the freedom to become available to others.

(there are other reasons why yuki and tohru ultimately don’t end up together, of course; another big one is that yuki needs to distance himself from his family to heal and continue growing, and tohru has not only been essentially adopted into the sohma family, but fills the motherly/parental role that yuki didn’t have. it’s also revealed that the majority of tohru’s motivations throughout the story aren’t just for the sohma family as a whole, but for kyo specifically.)

This series meant a lot to so many people, so I hope this gives all of you a sweet moment to say goodbye to your favorite character. Karasuno:

-Hinata gives you the tightest hug, swaying the both of you from side to side as he hums in your ear. He knows you’ll continue to see the best in people.

-Kageyama gently presses your foreheads together with his eyes closed. He believes that you’ll continue to let people into your life.

-Daichi gives your hand a squeeze and pulls you to his side for a side hug. He thinks that leading people by example will stay a part of who you are.

-Suga rubs his thumb over the back of your hand and gives you a sideways glance with a smile. He knows he taught you the strength in being kind

-Noya gives you a fist bump and a big shout! He wont stop yelling about taking pride in who you are.

-Tanaka delivers the best high-five of your life, laughing when you look at your red palms. Hes so sure that you will stay passionate about things you love.

Nekoma:

-Kuroo turns to face you fully and gives you a light hug, resting his chin on your head. Hes a smart guy, he knows that you’ll continue to help those around you.

-Kenma quietly presses his shoulder against yours for a few moments. Hes sure that you wont ever apologize for who you are, no matter how different you are from others.

-Yaku squeezes your hand so hard it almost hurts, giving you a determined smile. You’ve always been a person committed to bettering yourself, and he doesn’t see that changing any time soon.

-Lev throws his arm around your shoulders and shakes you a little. Hes pretty sure you will keep trying new things not because you have to, but because they make you happy.

Aoba Johsai:

-Iwaizumi presses you to his side and plants a kiss into your hair. Hes sure that you wont stop taking care of the people you care about.

-Kunimi gives you a shit eating grin and bumps his shoulder into yours. He knows you wont sweat the small stuff.

-Oikawa ruffles your hair and rests his arm around your shoulder. No doubt in his mind that you’ll stay focused on being the best you can be.

Fukurodani:

-Bokuto picks you up into a bone crushing hug and swings you around! He never questions if you will ever stop taking joy in the little things in life.

-Akaashi presses his hand to your lower back, a reminder that hes always there to support you. He reads people pretty well, and he feels like you’ll stay calm and focused when things get tough.

-Konoha bumps his hip with yours. He gets the feeling that you know at its cool to be ok at multiple things and not a genius at just one, both types have value in this world.

Shiratorizawa:

-Ushijima raises a hand in farewell, his gaze holding yours. Hes never been good with words, but he wants you to know that you have always been strong.

-Tendou presses your palms together before lacing his fingers with yours, swinging your connected hands up and around the two of you. He knows you understand that standing out isnt a bad thing, it just means you’re special.

-Semi leans against you, laying the side of his head on top of yours briefly. He knows you’ll remember to stay passionate about things you love, even if you arent the best at them.

-Goshiki has his fingers laced with yours as he grips your hand tightly, he really hates goobyes. He doesnt think he could beat it into your head any more how far big dreams can really carry you. He hopes you follow yours.

Others:

-Terushima daps you up, pulling you into a one armed hug complete with a hard pat on the back. The thought of you forgetting to be enthusiastic even in times of challenge never crosses his mind.

-Osamu gives you a side hug with his arm wrapped around your waist. He hopes you understand that living a proud life doesnt require fame, it just needs whatever makes you happy.

-Atsumu squeezes the back of your neck and gives you a sideways glance. Hes pretty sure you know that your success wasnt due to the people around you, it was thanks to something inside you.

-Kita grips your shoulder tightly before running his hand down your arm to give your hand a light squeeze. He hopes you follow your passion wherever it goes, no matter how far it may take you from what others expect of you.

-Hoshiumi holds your face in his hands, laughing as he presses his forehead against your squished face. Hes never doubted that you’d remember that life may give you roadblocks, but never impossibilities.

“Knowing that an end must come is all the more reason to begin anew. Lets keep giving it our very best.”
