Anthropology Is Science
1K posts
HI! I'm a student studying anthropology although I'm currently still working on my gen ed stuff. Science is my jam. I'm fascinated by forensics and hope to ultimately work in forensic anthropology. I actually enjoy studying and I love Anthropology. Writing and reading are two of my favorite hobbies. I also really, really, really enjoy research. I believe in the Oxford comma. My main blog is: holyalpacaspoons.tumblr.com

My adrenaline was really fucking high all through my sustainability science class today because I was fucking holding myself back the entire time from screaming at everyone. I held off to speak to the professor after class and I’m going to keep meeting with him in his office hours because I confronted him about and talked it over that we’re starting this semester on the idea of “overpopulation” like– that’s the fucking introduction and while he even admits to himself and is earnestly trying to conduct the class as well as he can around the content I need him to confront in front of everyone that overpopulation is not a scientific reality and in every rendition is meant to lend to arguments for genocide, eugenics, and colonialism, and that the real problem is overconsumption, consumerism, and abuse of resources.
I need him to confront that for everyone because it is completely irresponsible to present to these students specifically only this one side of the argument and pass it off as fact– and I know that this is the way the majority of the field and society sees it but you have a responsibility in the intellectual sphere as an instructor to not only uphold truth but ethical pursuit of that truth as well– but he dismisses that even though all of those things I was telling him was true, we would have to change the way we run the economy and so far the world won’t WHICH IS THE MOST DEFEATIST AND ASININE thing he could possibly say. I told him, people have a choice here, they don’t have to live this way. I need to tell him that if you take away that choice from them, they won’t do anything at all.

Hey studyble community. At this current back to school season, could we maybe try and be more gentle and thoughtful towards the trees? Like maybe you can use a few of those half empty notebooks from last year. Or you can ask someone that graduated if they have any paper pads left. Maybe if you have to buy new stationary and can’t reuse anything - maybe buy one notebook for two subjects - if you run out of space - buy another one, sure. And if you already are buying new paper - perhaps buy recycled paper. Maybe make sure you recycle your paper and plastic. Maybe, if you can, make safer choises and promote doing the same on your lovely blog. We live in a crucial point in time. Be kind to mother nature.

Best Books for Studyspo
Tumblr media
NON-FICTION STUDY RESOURCES:
Grit - Angela Duckworth
What it’s about: MacArthur “genius” grant-winning psychologist, Angela Duckworth, writes about how “grit” - a mixture of passion and long-term perseverance - not IQ or “talent” is the best predictor of success.
Why you should read it: Growing up, I was always the “smart kid” and for a long time I internalised that as my most valuable trait. Reading this book really reframed the way I thought about “success” and “hard work”. For the first time, I realised that how I reacted to failure was far more important than desperately trying to avoid it.
Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise - K. Anders Ericsson
What it’s about: From famous violinists to champion chess players, Swedish psychologist K. Anders Ericsson explores the importance of “deliberate practice” in becoming a master in any field.
Why you should read it: In a similar vein to “Grit”, Ericsson helps to reframe the way we think about nature vs. nurture and “talent”. He also gives some pretty helpful tips on what exactly “deliberate practice” is and how you can apply it.
Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning - Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger III, Mark A. McDaniel
What it’s about: Everyone says “study smart not hard” - but what actually is “studying smart”? “Make It Stick” draws on scientific evidence to present the most effective study techniques for long-term retention.
Why you should read it: The most practically useful book on this list. “Make it Stick” dismisses “fashionable” ideas about studying and highlights evidence-based methods that are proven to yield better results. Would highly recommend for any student.
MEMOIRS FOR STUDYSPO:
Breaking Night - Liz Murray
What it’s about: Homeless girl gets into Harvard.
In Order to Live - Yeonmi Park
What it’s about: North Korean girl crosses the Gobi desert, is human trafficked in China and finally finds a home and education in America.
I Am Malala: The Story of a Young Girl Who Stood Up For Education And Was Shot By the Taliban - Malala Yousafzai, Christina Lamb
What it’s about: Girl gets shot in the head by the Taliban for wanting an education. Girl lives and wins the Nobel Peace Prize.
Why you should read these books: Reading memoirs like these is always a little surreal because it feels as if the stories are too incredible to have actually happened. Yet, it’s undeniable that they did. Hearing about these experiences puts into perspective how lucky I am. It motivates me to be more appreciative, and make the most out of what I’ve been given.
Lab Girl - Hope Jahren
What it’s about: From playing in classroom labs in rural Minnesota to opening her own on the shores of Hawaii, Geobiologist Hope Jahren writes about her life-long love affair with science.
Why you should read it: There’s often a clear distinction between “scientific” and “creative” writing, but Jahren writes in a way that blurs the lines beautifully. As a computer scientist, I could care less about dirt and leaves. Yet, the way Jahren describes her craft and interweaves it with personal stories is nothing short of magical.

Woke up to the sound of heavy rain and spent my entire morning in bed reading and drinking tea. Now I decided to be a little productive and work for my uni research in one of cozy coffee shop with a tiny help of coffee.
