Note
i'm reading the book for the first time and i honestly can't fault tripitaka for losing his patience with his disciples sometimes. all i know is that if i was suddenly put in charge of four monsters and sent on a pilgramage, i'd probably handle it much worse.
rip to my great greatx95 grandpa but im built different

Portrait of Yuebei Xingjun, Sun Wukong's daughter in one of the non-canon JTTW continuation novels 南游记, done as a loose style imitation of Dai Dunbang's work
[ID: An illustration featuring Yuebei Xingjun, done in Chinese ink and watercolor style. Yuebei Xingjun is a stout monkey with tusks, pig-like ears, and a twisted neck. She is dressed in muted red, teal, and brown tones. Yuebei has a fierce expression and is standing resolutely in the usual manner of god or warrior portraits. She has one hand up in a 迎风 opera hand gesture and the other hand down by her side, holding her precious skull. To the side is her name written in grass script. End ID]

"Retrieving the scriptures from the Western Heaven can be hard work. Look at how sleepy this pair of 师兄弟 are."
Coloring practice that I ended up thinking looked like a storybook page
[ID: A fully colored illustration of Sun Wukong napping while reclining against a rock underneath a tree. He has one arm behind his head and one arm resting atop Zhu Bajie's back, a long piece of grass dangling from one hand. ZBJ is sleeping on his stomach, with his head rested against SWK's chestplate and his arms hugging SWK's abdomen. Above them are written the words "西天取经可幸苦 看着对师兄弟多眼困" End ID]

Redraw of a 1986 Sun Wukong shot I really liked
[ID: An illustration of Sun Wukong scratching his cheek and looking up and off to the right side. Across his shoulder is draped a blue robe with a pink and white stripe. Next to him is a screencap of the frame referenced from the 1986 Journey to the West show, with 1986 SWK in the same pose and outfit. The screencap is captioned "1986 JTTW Episode 1- around 21:15." ___, Two, Three
[ID: An illustration of the Yang siblings in their childhood and in the present. The Yang siblings are running happily to the left in their childhood, arm in arm and laughing. Yang Jiao, dressed in red, holds a stick. Yang Jian, dressed in maroon, grabs onto Yang Jiao's arm, himself holding a slingshot. Dressed in yellow, Yang Chan is similarly holding onto Yang Jian's arm, with a wooden sword in her free hand and another tied to her belt. In the present, Yang Jian and Yang Chan are uncolored, dressed as gods and both looking off to the right side forlornly. They stand at roughly the same position as their childhood selves, so that there is a noticeable empty spot at where Yang Jiao should have been. End ID]

Sun Wukong's assorted lingpai (mandate tokens)
[ID: 1) An illustration of the two sides of a mostly rectangular lingpai made of wood. One side reads "令" and the other reads "弼马温", both written in seal script. The bottom of the lingpai is adorned by horses facing outwards, clouds by their feet.
2) An illustration of the two sides of a stone lingpai shaped mostly like a rectangle, but flared at the top and bottom. One side reads "令" and the other reads "美猴王", both written in seal script. The top of the lingpai is adorned with a dragon-pearl surrounded by flames and clouds. The bottom is adorned with mountains, the sea, and coral. The borders of both the top and bottom are decorated with clouds and flowers. The top is swirled in a way that resembles a lingzhi or a ruyi.
3) An illustration of the two sides of a red jade lingpai, shaped mostly like a rectangle but with a curved top. One side reads "令" and the other reads "齐天大圣", both written in seal script. The top of the lingpai is adorned by a ruyi with a flower and mountain at its center. Below the ruyi is a lotus flower, which sits on top of the forehead of a Yazi carving. Clouds extend out from either side of Yazi and below him are flowers. The two sides of the lingpai have the carvings of cloud pillars wrapped in a stylized waterfall. At the bottom are clouds which could also be the foam from the waterfall. Lotuses float atop this foam/these clouds. At the center of the bottom is a mountain with a ruyi at its foot. This ruyi also has a flower within it.
4) The lineart for the three lingpai, with accompanying commentary. The one labeled "BiMaWen" reads "carved and burned wood," "simple, only horses and clouds," and "ornamental, basically no power." The one labeled "Beautiful Monkey King" reads "carved from a chunk of Sun Wukong's stone egg," "customized from Ao family royal lingpai template," and "mostly sea, cloud, and dragon pearl imagery." The one labeled "Great Sage Equaling Heaven" reads "carved from red jade," "fully custom, in style of an emperor's lingpai but HuaGuo," and "flowers, waterfalls, mountains, ruyi, Yazi, and clouds imagery." At the side are simple doodles of the three lingpai. The first is light brown with a yellow cord, captioned "simple cord, no tassel." The second is grey with a red cord and tassel, captioned "silk cord and tassel." The third is red with a red cord and tassel, captioned "braided cord," "jade and gold accented." End ID]
#my art#journey to the west#jttw#xiyouji#visual development#prop design#in case youre wondering about the note on the Beautiful Monkey King lingpai-#yes he did harass Ao Guang for that#as soon as he came back from being BiMaWen he wanted a proper lingpai of his own#so he marched down to Ao Guang's palace with a stone in hand and demanded he get it properly carved#the Great Sage lingpai was carved by the artists of the Heavenly Palace and presented to him when his title was recognized#you may have seen a rough draft of that lingpai on swk's belt in the Seven Sages lineup 👉👈#much simpler though of course gdhfsjkkdskl#at the time i was thinking of it as being carved from red wood#but nah now it's a solid chunk of jade you could knock someone out with it#also- 如意 means 'by one wants'- same as the ruyi in ruyijinkubang 'as-you-wish golden staff'#but ruyi here refers to the clustered swirls (google image it) bc its a common auspicious piece of imagery#Yazi is one of the famed Sons of the Dragon God#he's a violent and skilled fighter so he's usually used to adorn weaponry and armor#but i think swk would get a kick out of his lingpai having Yazi on it too

妖族七大圣 Seven Great Sages of Yao Kind
[ID: A character line-up of the Seven Great Sages, left-to-right by seniority status and accompanied by their king title in seal script. They are all dressed in varying levels of armor in an overall red-orange-yellow color palette. Bull Demon King has one hand on his hip and the other hand holding half of a skull with two fingers up like a wine bowl. Jiao Demon King has one hand on his hip with the other on the hilt of his sword. Peng Demon King is standing, wings not folded but not outstretched, with his hands in mudra positions. Lion-Camel King is smiling with his eyes closed, one paw hooked onto his belt and the other resting within his off-the-shoulder outer shirt. Macaque King is standing with hook swords in each of his hands. Golden Snub-nosed King is leaning against a wolf's teeth staff. Sun Wukong is standing, arm slightly up and head tilted down, his staff held behind him. End ID]
#my art#journey to the west#jttw#xiyouji#sun wukong#monkey king#character design#hanfu#visual development#bull demon king#jiao demon king#peng demon king#lion-camel king#macaque king#golden snub-nosed king#JUST FYI my jiao demon king macaque king and golden snub-nosed king are all girls#king was a gender neutral title and ancient chinese used the same pronoun for everyone (他 or 佢 depending on region)#using he/him for them in english because that gn pronoun is now translated as he/him and also They Are Butch Icons#ourgh i was gonna post this alongside Erlang Shen's Seven Sages too but alas his is not getting done anytime soon#but it will come eventually#also i knoWWW they did seniority by how physically big they were isnt of their actual senioritiy#but you cant give me a dragon and expect me to not make them tall and lanky#so im gonna say their humanoid forms are not reflective and that Bull Demon's bull form is bigger than Jiao Demon's dragon form

And now that the Trans Sun Wukong agenda has made the rounds, here's the lineart from my mock JTTW storybook page with and without all the faux scanned old book effects on it! Very happy with how the lineart turned out and I'm very happy with the editing since I think the lineart looks much more recognizably my art without all of it.
[ID: An illustration done in the general style of twentieth century Chinese storybooks. The panel depicts Sun Wukong holding his staff and pointing angrily at Zhu Bajie, who is shielding a disguised White Bone Spirit with his arm. Behind Sun Wukong is a stone with the character 坤 inscribed on it. The caption below the panel reads "八戒像自己被委屈了道: “师兄,你可不懂呀。这个脆弱的小姑娘有怎么可能伤害我们的师父?" 悟空就气得回答:"俺老孙不也是坤生的吗!有什么可不懂?你这样说这女妖就是看不起她罢了!" End ID]

Excerpt from “三打白骨 Three Hits against White Bone" by 伍楚萱
Bajie spoke as if he himself had been wronged, "Elder brother-disciple, perhaps you don't understand. How could a small, delicate girl like this harm our shifu?" Wukong replied angrily, "Wasn't I, Old Sun, also born under the kun trigram? What is there to not understand? Your saying this just shows you look down upon this female yao, that's all!" Translation Note: The 坤 kun trigram is the "female principal" in the Eight Trigrams of Daoist cosmology.

[ID: A screenshot of an article edited to say "[Third Maiden Sage Goddess of Hua Shan Yang Chan] looks loved-up as she strolls hand-in-hand with commoner husband in [Chang'an] after he failed [imperial] exam for a second time." The pictures have been edited to feature drawings of Sansheng Mu strolling with a fan in hand and of Sansheng Mu holding hands with Liu Yanchang as they walk together. Both are blushing and smiling, and LYC is holding a basket of vegetables and a fish. Below is a screenshot of tags edited to say "They really said 'here's the [niece of the Jade Emperor] and her cringe fail husband.'" End ID]

Everytime I go searching for Ao Lie content, without fail, I'll get so many search results that go like "Who is Bai Longma's true father??" "Who is Xiao Bailong truly the son of???" "Why is Bai Yulong not a black dragon like the Western Sea king??" "Why is he a white dragon like his uncle of the Northern Sea??" and it's so funny to me. Like. They are all branches of the Ao family. Have you people never heard of recessive genes.

he's talking about his most recent engineering project
[ID: A two panel comic. In the first panel, two unspecified Heavenly officers are looking at Erlang Shen and Sun Wukong from a distance. One says, "Say- Why do you think the True Sage and the Great Sage enjoy each other's company so much? What could they possibly have to talk about?" and the other responds, "Erlang Shen does have a reputation for keeping pets. Maybe he just feels at ease around an animal?". In the second panel, Erlang Shen and Sun Wukong are walking together. Behind the two is a screenshot from the Wikipedia article for the Dujiangyan, an ancient irrigation system in Sichuan. The screenshot is colored to indicate that it's Erlang's dialogue. Sun Wukong is watching him infodump and has an arrow pointing at him which says "genuinely very interested." End ID]
