The dimly lit dance floor reigned in the middle of the club, surrounded by tables and groups of people, laughing and talking.
The invitation to the New Year party dedicated to the Union's most valuable workers had hit Lana's inbox two weeks before. And, being new to Kalgan, she decided to give it a try.
But Kalgan could be as lonely as it was lovely.
The beats of a popular dance hit reverberated in her chest, as she strolled around the dance floor, a plate full of vegetables in aspic in one hand, a glass of kiwi cider in the other.
A roar of laughter diverted her attention. She turned towards its source. A blonde young man, only a few years older than her, dressed in seemingly expensive clothes, entertained a small group of people through terrible jokes.
"And you know what I told him?"
The guy looked familiar, she must have seen him around the premises at some point.
"He needed the food more than me, so he might as well keep it!"
Two men laughed, a few smiled awkwardly, the rest fell silent. But that didn't stop the fashion freak from continuing.
Lana turned away before anyone at the table noticed her. She knew whom the jokes were about. She contemplated her plate, but suddenly all she needed was a bag.
She emptied her glass, left the plate on the nearest unoccupied table and headed towards the exit.
What was she doing here? A mining ship would have been a much more pleasant environment. In the darkness of the sky, surrounded by asteroids and distant stars, there were no imbecils laughing about what they did not understand.
Who did she expect to find here anyway? The one who sent her the invitation never showed up.

The more I think of the Foundation Series, the more admiration I have for Asimov's genius. And when I say Asimov's genius, I mean not only his characters, the plot, dialogues and descriptions. I also mean the figures of style, which give his writing a poetic touch.
Of all the figures of style, I mostly think of the antithesis, as a subtle and effective way to describe characters.
Of course, the main antitheses which I think of are the ones involving the Mule, used to describe both the Mule and his male counterparts throughout the Foundation Series. For example:
Torie vs. the Mule
While the first has a mediocre intelligence and what I personally perceive as cute pretty features, the Mule's intelligence is way above average and his looks are not pretty, at least not according to what is generally considered a prettyboy.
Pritcher vs. the Mule
While the first is strong and confident, the latter is frail and has an inferiority complex.
They are both, however, smart and competent, so the antithesis doesn't go that far in their case.
Channis vs. the Mule
The first is arrogant, cruel, superficial (makes fun of others' looks), cowardly (when directly confronted with the Mules prays for the First Speaker to save him). The latter is the opposite, although there is an element of cowardice in him as well.
The First Speaker vs. the Mule
Again there is the antithesis between confidence and inferiority complex. The First Speaker displays cruelty bringing up those things which undermine the Mule's confidence, while the Mule displays anger. The first plays dirty, relying on blackmailing and secrecy, while the latter is open to a direct confrontation. The first one is motivated by self-righteousness, the latter by revenge.
Prince Dagobert vs. the Mule 🤣
No comment, absolutely no comment!
And in antithesis with all his male counterparts, the Mule is the only one artistically gifted.
The more I think of the Foundation Series, the less I believe anything will equal it. 😔

I found a song close to how I imagine the music Magnifico used to kill prince Dagobert: Vessel - Red Sex (Re-Strung) feat. Rakhi Singh (Official Audio)!
Even though his music is described as "ugly" and "evil" in that scene, I would pretty much drop the ugly part.
This song gives me the exact vibes of that scene!

Kalgan's night was other planets' dusk. With speeding luxury vehicles racing around Kalgan City like diamond dice on a concrete roulette and distant sky scrapers resembling perfume bottles where gold was exchanged for money, one could hardly speak of dark.
Watching the Kalgan City panorama through the glass wall of the First Citizen's office on the last floor of the highest spire was breathtaking. Especially given that the glass wall was so clean you instinctively felt like reaching out for a gem or two. Also because the glass was one-way see through. And mainly when you were naked, as they both were.
The Mule passed her a half full bottle of mango and blueberry cider and the refreshing liquid tickled her tongue.
He put one arm around her waist. The watch around his other wrist vibrated, as it always did when a subordinate messaged him, but he ignored it. It was their night, after many weeks of barely seeing each other.
"And that," Lana followed the Mule's slender arm pointing at a distant structure, "is the hotel where you go if you don't want anyone to bother you."
"It looks a bit dull," she replied.
"It's supposed to."
She passed the bottle back to him and he took a sip. He stroked her hair and offered to pass the cider, but she shook her head because it was something else she wanted; his naked gaunt body, his light brown hair with grey strands falling on his shoulders, his wild demeanour when he let go.
He undid the metallic strap of his watch and threw the device on his desk.
If only times like these lasted forever.

Does anyone remember Ian Anderson's famous one foot stand pose when playing the flute? He is famous for this stance. Besides his amazin flute playing, of course! It is out of this world.
His flute is the main reason I imagined the Visi-Sonor as a flute, even though it doesn't resemble one.
Ian Anderson's performance resembles very much how Iimagine Magnifico on the stage. Including the one foot stand. I would have loved to see a similar aesthetic in Foundation s3 😂
The flute was always fascinating to me.

*** S p o i l e r s ***
As part of my 2025 Foundation reread, it has become a tradition for me to write a review of each Foundation Series novel.
Hence, I am doing the same for "Foundation and Earth", although this review is shorter and lacks substance because I don't know what to write.
If I didn't read the Original Trilogy and Edge, I would like Earth more. But as things are, I am not very keen on Earth, mostly because I kept comparing it to the previous books.
Throughout my whole reread I felt taken down because I knew how Earth ends and all the things I love most about the series were long gone anyway.
My favorite thing about Earth is Trevize's transformation, from an easy going guy to a person tormented under the weight of his decision. I can sense a chosen one trope here, which is not my favorite trope.
The others were uninteresting to me. Bliss feels bland, but I guess all Gaians are like that (except for one), since individuality is nor exactly celebrated on Gaia. She has an excuse for manipulating others, but when someone else does the same thing it is bad, double standards all the way.
Pelorat was annoying with his inability to stick to the point when he talked, but maybe Asimov was paid by word and that could explain things.
How I wish the Foundation Series ended? I would have loved a Second Empire without the flaws of the first one, in a galaxy where the Second Foundation is defeated/disabled/deactivated by the First one.
If the First Foundation stands for freedom and individuality, the Second for peace and stability and Gaia for double standards life, as stated in Edge, I see the First one as the lesser evil.
Also: was Gaia invented just so that a robot doesn't feel guilty for violating the Zeroth Law? Did he kidnap a child just so that this prolongues his life enough to witness fully formed Gaia? Horrible ending for a wonderful series. Asimov, what were you thinking?
After my 2025 Foundation reread, it's time to give a final answer to the question of the year, of the millenium:
Did I find an other character , whom I love more than the Mule?
The answer is no.
I don't know what to read next, probably "Stars Like Dust", it has the first mention of a Visi-Sonor! (according to the internet)

"So she moved in?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure it is a good idea Sir?"
"No."
"If you consider necessary, I can arrange for a squad to guard the palace. She did kill seven of our men when we captured her."
"She felt attacked."
"What if she feels attacked again?"
"..."
"Well, nevermind Sir. At least you don't need to guess what she's feeling all the time."

Am I supposed to believe this creature is ugly?
Because all I see are beautiful eyes, nice hair, interesting features, killer waistline and gorgeous legs. All I ever saw.

Because after seeing the Foundation s3 trailer I feel the need to assess the accuracy of the casting.
Hats down to Michael Whelan, he got everything right on the "Foundation and Empire" cover.
Are you aggressive Magnifico?

The last session before finally embarking on a mining ship to take the Second Foundation by surprise was neverending. The worst part wasn't the fact that day had turned into dusk, nor her hunger or tiredness.
Oh no. It was the self-conceited fashion freak who allegedly knew the Second Foundation whereabouts and believed the mission revolved around him. Channer or something.
"Channis," Pritcher intervened. "If you are done stating your conclusions, I suggest we end the meeting here. It has been a long day for all of us."
Channis, yes! Thank you Pritcher, always reliable.
Lana still didn't understand the fuss for seeking out a secret organization which no one could tell existed or not. Wasn't there a better use of the Union's resources?
But she trusted the Mule. He had ended her inner agony by admitting he knew she knew his identity. And promised not to erase her mind if she promised not to talk.
"Of course, of course," Channis replied, probably with a smile which blinded the First Citizen facing him.
Sun glasses, First Citizen! Or else Mr. Nail Polish will hurt your dark eyes.
"I must express my gratitude for fixing the tiny bathroom issue of our small ship. It emanated an unpleasant odour.
Not as unpleasant as your stupid perfume though.
And it would have turned our voyage into a troublesome quest.
One additional bathroom for the gentleman! He probably spends half a day there.
I am sure Ms. Lana and I will collaborate in a professional manner.
Only if you shut up once in a while.
Unless, of course, she feels uneasy when travelling with a male companion.
Where is the male companion?
Maybe we could even speak of a promotion on return?
You can become his jester. But you won't last given how boring you are.
I am just joking, Sir. I want to express my gratitude for being chosen for this mission."
Is he done?
"Excellent," the Mule stood up signalling the emotional torture was over. "You will embark the day after tomorrow, 10 A.M. Kalgan time. We will be keeping in touch."
Oh, how could she forget to mention the technical revision papers?
"Excuse me Sir," she raised her hand and spoke, as all eyes turned to her, the one who didn't say a word the whole time. "May I have one more minute of your time?"
"Of course," the Mule answered. "You've been refraining from laughing for the last thirty minutes, I wonder how you managed."
A flutter of butterflies flooded her body, from her stomach to her finger tips and her lungs stood stone-still for a moment, as it happened each time he addressed her less formally.
Please don't look into my mind now. Please.

Don't tell me that there weren't planetary leaders who rejoyced the Mule's rise to power, if for no other reason, then just to see the Foundation beaten at its own game. ⚡️
Don't tell me that there weren't subordinates happy to work for the Mule, if for no other reason, then just to see nobility and nepotism without competence die. 🌌
Don't tell me the Mule was the worst thing which ever happened to the galaxy, when all the Kalgan warlords who succeeded him copied his style and some people were also collecting Muliana. 🥰
Don't tell me some people didn't regret his premature death, especially after Bayta's autobiography, where they read that one of the greatest galactic conquerers was clowning around on the Kalgan beach and giving concerts. 😍
Or, tell me, but I wouldn't believe it.

Looks like a nice series! But why is it called "Foundation"? 😂
So the team means to say that the Foundation, the Empire, Gaal Dornik, Hari Seldon and the Mule lived at the same time?
"She is the only one who can stop him". You mean Gaal Dornik is the only one who can stop the Mule? Impossible, the two lived about two centuries apart.
I have no issue with creative interpretation. But if the author describes Bayta's hair as long and black, maybe it is part of the character and should be presented as such?
The same goes for the Mule, of course. If the author insisted about 100 times that his eyes are sad and brown, maybe it is part of who the character is, and should not be changed?
But the music and visuals are great, hats down.
Give me a couple hundred million dollars, I also have fanfiction ideas! 🤣
