Sorta quick drawing of one of my favorite characters: Selene Gallio, the black queen of the hellfire club. I’ve long despaired over her portrayal in the comics. I’ve said before that she’s a horror character in a superhero setting. X corps, that short lived series, was onto something when they got leaned on her years of expertise on city management. I also liked Necrosha but it ended too quickly. Makes me think that Marvel should start tidying up and categorizing their magic system. I’m rambling.

My second piece on Kwannon and Betsy. I will post the first one later on.

As problematic their union was, as a gay Asian child, I was enamored of her. There was representation, yes, finally, Asian in a major marvel book, but also the dream of being in a body you felt best represented you. Early Betsy despaired that she wasn’t a fighter, donning an armored costume that compensated for her weaker qualities. Kwannon’s body gave her the kinetic and physical role she coveted. Poor Kwannon, along for the ride. While they have somewhat addressed their schism during Krakoa, I wasn’t fully satisfied. I wish they’d explore it more. I wish they’d explore Kwannon as a person more. She was an assassin and now she’s fighting on the side of the angels. She is suspiciously without any moral dilemma. Perhaps a future writer can address this.

I grew up with The New Mutants. They were a welcome foil to the X-men and avengers. If you’re wondering why Sam look a little dorky, I’m basing him on the earlier depictions. I didn’t get to see Magma a lot so that’s why she’s missing here as she never felt like she was part of the team for me. Anyway, I hope you guys like this. ❤️❤️❤️

More old art. I tried to start a series where I put various X-men characters in casual clothes. We see them often in their uniforms but when the chance comes… a lot is left to be desired. Thankfully, the hellfire gala helped bring attention to this. Other artists have also helped style and put characters in better non costume clothes like Anka, Dautermann, Vecchio, and others. This is my attempt, haha.

I started with, who else, Emma Frost. I wanted to reference her bondage theme with the corset but also play up her softer nature, which is often hidden. While she may lean severe, I wanted an approach to florals tempered by her steel but still romantic. Being from old money, I wanted something almost impractical for her but still capable of movement. While mostly floral themed, she has gold and diamond bee earrings as a symbol of her queen bee status.

And yes those are customized Dolce & Gabbana ankle boots.

Posting old work. I’ve always wanted Marvel to lean more heavily on Selene’s witchier side. She’s a horror story character trapped in a superhero comic book. My favorite story of hers was during Necrosha and they were building into her mythology by having Warpath’s tribe interact with her culturally— a coyote forever hungry, forever bringing ruin to the villages she visits.
