These amazing ants are called Cataglyphis viaticus.
They are originally from northern Africa (Marocca, Algier, Tunisia, Lybia, Egypt) and live in desert/half-dessert or steppe-like regions.
With their excellent eyes they are able to keep their orientation, even in the desert or semi-desert where any other kind of creature isn't able anymore to orientate. That is mainly because they can see infrared-radiation and even polarized sunlight.
They are good hunter & collector and with their big mandibles they are able to catch even much more bigger prey then they are.
Hope you enjoy the photos...
Cheers

That are some of the most beautiful and interesting ants I ever kept: Camponotus fulvopilosus.
Their origin is southern Africa (Southafrica, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mosambique...). They are from 8mm (minor worker) to approx. 20mm (mojor worker & queen) in size. The diet of these ants consists mainly of insects (they are actively hunted) and sugar or honeydrew. The eyes of these ants are extremely big and well developed so that they have an excellent eyesight. The color of them is mainly reddish-black and only the rear part (Gaster) got long tight yellow/golden hair.
Enjoy the photos...
Cheers

New blog - hope you enjoy it!
Welcome to my new blog “Ants ‘n Photos”!
I keep ants as “pet’s” now for more then 8 years and have experiences with several different ant species.
In this time I shot some thousand photos and many videos of my ants - and I’m continuously shoot some more every day.
I think it’s a pity than the most of them just lie on my hard drive - so I decided to share them here together with my experiences in ant-keeping.
Please enjoy my blog and feel free to comment my photos or ask me anything.
Cheers
Pierre
