Summary of Saezuru Chapter 43

Thank you to everyone who patiently waited for me to get back into a more manageable state of busy. It took longer than I thought to get through my pile of work, but I finally found some time to write a summary for this highly emotional chapter! There’s so much going on that I don’t even know where to start. Yashiro and Doumeki are finally talking without other people around. Doumeki calls Yashiro “Yashiro-san” for the first time. He also seems to have caught on to Yashiro’s bad eyesight. We learn what happened before Amou decided to bring Doumeki to Tsunakawa. Yashiro is naked most of the time, and Doumeki is confusing the hell out of him with his new sassiness which is exactly what I was hoping for. But it’s also sad to see how Yashiro seems to think that the Doumeki he fell in love with doesn’t exist anymore. The cliffhanger is just as mean as expected for the last chapter of a volume. And now we’ll have to wait at least until the end of March, because Sensei will skip the next issue of ihr Hertz, probably because she needs some extra time to finish everything for the release of volume 7 on March 1st, 2021. Maybe she’ll bless us with a few extra pages again, like she did in volume 6, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

And now on to the summary - as always behind a cut, because I’ll probably change a few things here and there later.

Chapter 32 - Explaining “Anata, anata, anata (you, you, you)”

While I was reading chapter 32 spoilers I noticed that this statement by Yashiro might be lost in translation, so I thought about elaborating it for those that are interested. Explaining how second person is used in the context of Japanese conversation is actually pretty damn complicated but hopefully I can explain it in a way that makes sense ^^

In general, Japanese people avoid using the word “you” when conversing with others as it is impolite under most circumstances. If the person has a title, you would use that e.g. Sensei, Kashira, Senpai. If not, you use their names e.g. Yashiro, Yashiro-san etc. to avoid using the word “you”  

So, when is it appropriate to use the word “you”?

Before we get to this, it’s helpful to note that there are several ways of saying the word “you” in Japanese. I’ve listed the most common ones used nowadays (in order of politeness)

Anata (あなた) – most polite way of saying the word “you” (tend to be used more by girls than guys but can be both genders). In general, only used when referring to someone equal or lower than yourself, can be both formal and impolite depending on the context you use it in.

Kimi (君) – used when referring to someone equal or lower than yourself (used more by guys than girls) less polite compared to Anata but much politer than Anta/Omae

Anta (あんた/アンタ) – can be used by both genders, comes from the word “Anata” but way more informal. Impolite way of saying “you” in most context

Omae (お前) – used only by guys and similarly to Anta, impolite in most context  

Teme (てめえ)/Kisama (貴様) – used only by guys and rudest way to say the word “you”. You often hear it in anime/manga to insult/express anger at another person but in real life it is not generally used  

So back to the question about when it is appropriate/okay to use the word “you” without necessary being rude…

1.      When older person is using it to refer to someone younger/less authority (e.g. teacher to student, boss to his subordinates, senpai to kouhai)

Yashiro often refers to his subordinates (Doumeki/Nanahara) as “Omae” and Misumi refers to Yashiro as “Omae”. While older person can refer to someone younger/less authority as “you”, in general, younger person should never be using the word “you” at someone who is older/has more authority unless they want to be disrespectful.

2.      When there is strong desire/need to emphasise the word “You”

e.g. I like you [Kimi/Anata ga suki], I need you, what is your name? etc (but even in this case, it is unusual for someone younger to use the word “you” when conversing with older person and whether it’s rude or not is very context dependent).

3.      Between two people that are intimate/close

Husband can refer to his wife as Omae and wife can refer to husband as Anata and it can be an endearment in certain context (more commonly accepted in western Japan than eastern).

Similarly, close male friends can use the word “Omae” especially in the context where their relationship is solid enough that formalities don’t matter. (e.g. Yashiro and Kageyama)  

So how is Doumeki using the word “you”? From volume 1-3 there is two instances where Doumeki uses the word “Anata (you)” at Yashiro

“I’ll do anything if I can be by your side” (volume 1, chapter 3)

“I can’t ask for it to stop if that’s what you want to do” (volume 3, chapter 15)

We see Doumeki using the word “Anata (you)” during a more intimate scene with Yashiro when there is only two of them together. While he should really be saying “Kashira (boss)” instead of “Anata (you)”, he uses it here to emphasise the word “you” and to make his statement more personal by breaking the boundary between boss/subordinate relationship. While Yashiro is clearly noticing this, he doesn’t comment on it. If it was coming from any of the other subordinates, like Nanahara or Sugimoto I’m pretty sure they’ll be thoroughly beaten up. (He later does mention that he has a soft spot for Doumeki and it shows in this instance too)

From end of volume 4 onwards we start to see Doumeki use “Anata” much more frequently. He says it a total of 5 times at Yashiro during the time they spend together at his apartment.

Some examples: “I have always loved touching your hair”; “No if I hadn’t met you I would be…” (volume 5 chapter 24)

Here the word “Anata” conveys a more possessive tone akin to those exchanged between lovers.

In chapter 32, Doumeki again refers to Yashiro as “Anata”

“I will not leave by your side”

Yashiro repeats the word “Anata” back  at Doumeki to make a statement that he is overstepping his boundaries as it is not a term that should be used between a boss and his subordinate. He also states right after that it was a mistake for him to sleep with Doumeki (Just because we’ve slept together, don’t think that you can boss me around is the undertone here)

Doumeki briefly corrects himself and says “Kashira” but is again saying “Anata” later in this chapter which I find quite funny.

Why Ryusaki couldn't be Yashiro's "Right Guy"? Unfortunately, Ryusaki was disqualified from the beginning.

Let's go back to the beginning. When did they meet ? It was right after Yashiro graduated from high school. What do this mean ? It means he just experience the lost of Kageyama, and learn that he is never capable to be a honorable man. At this painful time, he will try to comfort himself. But how ? Normal people like us would go for a drink or talk to friends, to make our wound feel better. But Yashiro, who had never experienced love or affection, heal himself by hurting himself even more. "If I create a wound that hurts more, this wound here will be less painful." This is how Yashiro comfort himself. So he went out to find someone to hurt him. This was his "Golden Age".

At this dark time of life, Yashiro met Ryusaki, in the worst situation possible, a gangrape party. Ryusaki, as all the normal people like us, did not think sex as painful as Yashiro sees it. For Ryusaki, sex is enjoyable. He enjoys sex like all the others, and he believes Yashiro enjoys sex too. If not, why did he come back to them again and again ? In the many time of skin touching, Ryusaki slowly feel the affection for Yashiro. In cp 14, Ryusaki asked Yashiro, "Do you ever want to be a woman ? Have you ever in love with a man?"

In Yakuza, women has no rank. No matter how smart or powerful a woman, they are always Aneki no matter she is the wife or lovers of a Yakuza. "Yakuza is a twisted male totalitarian society", this is how a Yakuza (a Real Life Yakuza) commented themselves. Woman has no rank, but also won't get involved in any Yakuza conflict, this is an unwritten rule for Yakuza. (And this was why Ryusaki felt comfortable to leave his girlfriend behind. He just didn't know how despicable Hirata can get…)So asking Yashiro if he want to be a woman, is actually asking "Do you want to hide under My protection ? "

If Yashiro answered Yes, he become Ryusaki's "Girl" and Ryusaki will keep him away from all Yakuza. But how did Yashiro answered ? "I want to be a woman, because it will be easier to fuck with men. That's all. " "Love …I've had more than enough. "

For Ryusaki, sex can be another language of love. But for Yashiro, once there is sex, there is nowhere for love. Doumeki made the same mistake and so Yashiro fleet from him, but Ryusaki was very unlucky. He made the mistake before he has any position in Yashiro's heart. Therefore, Ryusaki was out from the beginning. From the moment he fucked with Yashiro, he lost his chance to be Yashiro's "Right Guy".

What are Yashiro and Doumeki talking about in the chap 43 spoilers?

In the spoilers that are out on weibo, Yashiro and Doumeki are talking about how Yashiro knows Kido (fuck buddy 1) which leads to talking about Ryuuzaki (fuck buddy 2) and how he’s probably banging his cellmates in prison. Yashiro mentions that he went to visit Ryuuzaki. (Imagine Doumeki’s interpretation must look like flirty Yashiro running hand in hand with all his former lovers now that he’s free 😂) Doumeki says Ryuuzaki only wanted Yashiro (of course) to which Yashiro says “nah he hates me” then Yashiro’s phone rings and it’s Inami (he who must not be named!!) and (fuck buddy 3). Yashiro asks if it’s his phone ringing and tells Doumeki to leave it and he’ll look at it later. Up to this point it’s been a pretty aimiable and somewhat flirtatious conversation, Inami is Doumeki’s breaking point.

Doumeki basically and totally slut-shames Yashiro because it appears that Yashiro still does it with anyone. Yashiro has no idea what he’s talking about but it seems he’s figured out that Doumeki must be jealous, so Yashiro says nothing for a moment and then says in typical Shoujo manga fashion “Why would you think things would be different?”

Doumeki says that it seems people can’t change so easily (back to ch 42’s Tsunakawa challenge question) and Yashiro acknowledges that Doumeki changed and asks if it made him happy to get what he wanted (being a Yakuza.)

Yashiro gets out of the bath and basically says that Doumeki being a Yakuza doesn’t matter to him and what he does doesn’t matter and wasn’t he leaving now that he’s out of the bath, but whatever that doesn’t matter either. (Tantrum Yashiro)

Doumeki whips the door open and says if Yashiro is giving him an order he’s not his to order around anymore. Then says if anyone will do for Yashiro then can Yashiro do it with him and he calls him “Yashiro-san”

It’s interesting to note the escalation of this scene. Doumeki begins as old Doumeki, gentle caring protective he almost slips and calls him “Kashira” but stops himself, when he reaches the peak anger he uses “Anata” to stress that he’s not Yashiro’s subordinate. Then he’s looking down at the person he just basically called a whore and says “Yashiro-san.”

I haven’t seen the back page of the book yet to see if we are indeed in for a long 4 month hiatus, but that was indeed the cliffhanger that will keep us coming back for more.

“Hey cutie,” Yashiro said with a slight smile, “come here often?”

Doumeki stared at him as he leaned his hip against the counter, jarring it slightly and toppling the stack of condoms behind him. Doumeki glanced at the young cashier who blushed profusely and looked pleadingly at him.

The man who spoke to him was the same slick Yakuza he had seen earlier that evening. He’d called him cute then too.

“Just picking up a snack, in case I get hungry,” Doumeki said.

“Snack, huh?” Yashiro nodded to his purchase, “I’m just picking up a few condoms, in case I get lucky.”

“I see,” Doumeki blushed, “Excuse me then.”

“Um... you know...” Yashiro said looking at Doumeki’s nameplate, “Officer Doumeki... it’s a rough neighborhood... you wouldn’t mind walking me home would you?”

“Don’t you have a bodyguard?” Doumeki asked, frowning as Yashiro grinned, knowing that he’d clearly made an impression on him.

“I have an assistant,” Yashiro said, “but he acts like my mother... so I sent him home.”

“I’m off duty, but...” Doumeki thought it through and nodded to Yashiro, “If you have no other means of transportation, then I’ll make sure you get home safely.”

“Off duty... lucky for me,” Yashiro collected a few more boxes of condoms, “Very, very lucky.”

Things that keep me up at night

Doumeki knowing exactly where Yashiro was and what he was up to this entire time.

As someone who's writing an alternate ending for Saezuru, because I just can't wait anymore, who's also read the story countless times throughout the last 5 years, something about the after timeskip chapter isn't letting me live.

The hair, something seemingly subtle that could just be me making things up for myself but...

How it can be seen below, before the timeskip Doumeki never cared about his hair. He let the stubborn hedgehog on his head do whatever it liked:

Now, one could say it's the age, that he was barely released from prison, different Yakuza position,..

What strikes me, however, since Y.K. likes to make more subtle or direct references/clues etc..

What are the chances that it is a coincidence that he parts his to the same side Yashiro did back in the day, at almost the same exact part of his head?

And to add to that..

Throughout all of the story before the timeskip there were only three moments where he didn't have his hair down.

1) Was with Doumeki in his bath, where he slicked it back with the water.

2) Was the first time he hit Doumeki up as a cop (whether Yashiro remembers it or not)

3) One of the last, most intimate and gentle gestures Doumeki did to.. for(?) him..

Can Yashiro suddenly simply not stand having his hair in his face anymore? With his "lost" eye parting it to the right would be more simple and less annoying than ever before. Can he maybe not stand having it in his face because running his hand through it if it gets annoying is triggering? Is that why he slicks it back lazily because "out of the way out of the mind"? Or does he subconsciously recreate that little moment with Doumeki each time all over again?

It could all be purely accidental but it just strikes me as odd. Throughout most of their (actual) sex scene Yashiros hair was slicked back. Doumeki never cared for his hair, but parting it that way could be a remembrance of sort for himself, maybe one of those "The person I loved used to do it so I subconsciously take that trait on as well without noticing"...
