I was actually too young for die wilden Hühner. But I was a fan of the spin-off, the wilden Küken (the wild chicks-chicken babies-). They took the chicken from the old gang and also had a rival gang, die Grottenolme. I think there are similar themes, and I think one/multiple queer folks. I think I shipped to of the boys. They are also more racially diverse, I think. Definitely one of my core childhood series except from the Maus and Connie (the YA books are shit btw) and Carlotta I’m Internat (soooo kitschig, ich weiß nicht, ich mochte das damals auch nicht, but the imagination of a cool boarding school was escapism for me).
Okay fuck it. Sit up in bed junky we explaining this shit to @f1yogurt . (Yes, I actually wrote a lot of this yesterday at night, cause I have no self control)
Way back in the early 2000s there were those YA and kids novels, 'Die wilden Hühner' (the wild chickens) and 'Die Wilden Kerle' (the wild soccer bunch... there is an english translation)
Die Wilden Hühner:
Tumblr media
- A clique of five girls who go about their day to day life (Sprotte, Frieda, Trude, Melanie and Wilma)
- They have a rivalring gang of four boys, the 'pygmies' (Fred, Willie, Torte and Steve)
- The girl gang's whole deal is that they love chicken (and I mean as pets, not to eat. They take an oath where they actually swear off from eating chicken)
- One book is about the boys trying to break into the house of Sprotte's grammys, to steal her treasure (that grammy is actually quite the cunt)
- Another one is about the girls saving that aforementioned grandmothers chickens, as the grandmother wants to slaughter them (the chickens)
- It deals with a lot of adulting, and problems kids could be dealing with, like: parental abandonement (as Sprotte's dad walked out on her and her mom), having only one parent (like Sprotte), divorce of parents (for Trude), physical abuse through the parent (for Willie), loss of job for a parent and the consequences of that for the family (for Melanie) teenager relationships in general.
- It even deals with homosexuality, as in the last book Wilma figures out she only likes girls. The girls have to deal with coming to terms with that, there is a big falling out between Wilma and Melanie. The author, Cornelia Funke, has a really great way of dealing with this issue. A very dignified and understanding way.
- There were five books, that they made into three movies (though we mostly ignore the third one, as it destroyed a lot of our beloved characters #notmyfred)
Die wilden Kerle (the wild soccer bunch):
Tumblr media
- A clique of boys who only eat, sleep and prey soccer
- There was a book series (but I never read those) and 6 movies (though the newest is more of a remake)
- Yes, all those books and movies are basically about playing soccer and having adventures
- In the first movie they have to play against the 'dicke michie' (fat michie) to get their soccer field back
- They are joined by a girl in the first one, Vanessa. ('holy shit' I know. But at that age that was really 'holy shit')
- In the second one they wanna play against the german national team, and Vanessa leaves for a period to be with that skater boy 'Gonzo Gonzales' (who was a discount Cpt. Jack Sparrow. And all of our girls hearts were broken, cause we wanted her to be with Leon. Motherfucker, even Vanessa's actress didn't want for Vanessa to be with Gonzo. #teamleon)
Tumblr media
(Look at him. Apparently they actually showed the actor pirates of the carribean and told him to copy Jack)
- Third one is about an old member of the bunch and his all girls team challenging the boys.
- Forth one had some weird soccer match at 'Ragnarök' with some wolf themed team and 'Silberlichten'... I never understood that one.
- And the fifth one had vampires bro.
- They had those cool curses, „Kackeverdammte“, „Hottentotten Albtraumnacht“, „Shitte nochmal“, „Kaninchen Wattebausch Bommelschwanz Po“, „Schwabbelbauch“.
- There are concepts in the movies, especially later on, that make you think, 'is this shit supernatural'.
- Gonzo in the second one for example is working with and worshipping this witch, 'Staraja riba'.
- The 'Silberlichten' in the fourth one are... I have no fucking clue what they are.
- THERE ARE FUCKING VAMPIRES IN THE FIFTH ONE MAN! (they were completely riding the twilight wave back then)
Anyways, back then you were either a 'Wildes Huhn' or a 'Wilder Kerl'.
We actually had cliques like them. We wore necklaces with chicken feathers like 'Die Wilden Hühner'. I don't know if boys had one ear ring like the pygmies. 'Die Wilden Kerle' had so much merchandise.
It was just a huge thing, and quite literally influenced a whole generation of us.

Does anyone else get too tired to have emotions? Anytime I mention it to a doctor or therapist or something they just go “That doesn’t happen”. Yo dude, I’m Autistic. Having emotions requires energy and effort and when I’m exhausted, frankly, I don’t give a damn.

okay fine I’ll make a dedicated post about /hj
tone indicators are, allegedly, supposed to be used for clarifying what you mean by statements that could be interpreted in multiple ways. “this is a joke, don’t take it seriously”, “I’m being sarcastic”, “I mean this in a good way”, and so on. this could, in theory, be really helpful for avoiding miscommunication, especially in the context of talking to autistic people, and anyone else who for whatever reason has trouble trying to interpret what people mean by things. in this context, /hj is worse than useless.
if you’re unfamiliar, /hj means “half-joking”. what exactly this means is different depending on the person using it, but the generally accepted definition is “this statement is partially a joke, but not completely”. this doesn’t clarify anything about what a statement means. it requires the reader to figure out on their own exactly which aspect of the statement is a joke.
whenever I point this out, I tend to get a few different defenses of /hj, which generally are people giving their own alternate definitions of the tone indicator. the fact that this tone indicator has multiple common contradictory uses itself makes it worse as a way of clarifying intent, regardless of what these different uses actually are, but that said those individual alternate uses are also bad. here are the ones I’ve seen the most:
“some part of this is a joke, but not all of it”
this appears to be the primary meaning, and as I just said, this requires the reader to figure out for themself exactly which part is supposed to be a joke.
no it doesn’t mean that, it means “all of the statement is half-joking”, stop taking everything so literally
thanks I’m autistic
“I mean this sincerely, but it’s funny”
sometimes phrased as “it’s a joke, but not ironic”. this in practice means that a straightforward reading of the statement at face value is correct. in my opinion, this situation is not something that requires a tone indicator. but even if you think this is a useful thing to express, the other common meanings of /hj make /hj specifically a bad way to clarify this.
“this sounds like I’m joking, but it’s actually serious”
oh so like /srs then?
“this sounds like I’m joking, but part of it is serious”
okay but like what part.
“this is a joke about a serious topic”
this one in practice means the same thing as /j or /s, and is supposed to mean that you shouldn’t take the statement seriously, but that you should take the subject matter of the joke seriously. I think this comes from the assumption that since “tone indicators” are called that, and since joking about a serious thing involves a different tone when speaking out loud than joking about a silly thing, that they have to indicate that difference through text, even though it doesn’t actually change anything about the way the statement is interpreted.
“I mean this sincerely, but I don’t want to say I mean it sincerely”
often explained as meaning “haha… unless” as though that meant anything at all, this is using the ambiguity of /hj to not have to commit one way or the other about what you’re trying to communicate, so depending on how people react you can retroactively decide what /hj means. this same effect can be achieved by not using any tone indicator at all.
“I’m not sure what I mean by this”
this one makes no sense. if you’re not sure yourself how someone else should interpret the statement, why are you using a tone indicator at all? what do you think the purpose of tone indicators is? again, you can do this same thing by just leaving a statement unmarked.
conclusion
/hj does not clarify in any way what you mean by any statement. every time I’ve seen it used, I’ve had to spend time and mental energy trying to work out what it means, which is the opposite of what tone indicators are supposed to be for. I’m not saying “don’t use /hj”, but if you’re using tone indicators as an accessibility feature to help people like me understand what you’re saying, /hj is extremely ambiguous, and therefore does not serve that function.
