Fiyero Tiggular did not sing the entirety of Dancing Through Life — fear infested depression disguised as nihilistic warts and all — for so many to just write him off as the handsome but shallow popular guy
#guess who went to see Part 1 in theatres#seen one too many reviews and analysis that only mention that he’s hot and good at dancing and singing#one analyzer barely drew parallels between the lyrics and consciously staying ignorant under the rise of fascism#and like yes that is a big theme too but how are you not connecting the dots#the song doesn’t just exist to represent an important subject it is sung by Fiyero for a reason#it’s supposed to inform his character as well#just like Glinda isn’t really happy when she sings Thank Goodness but pretends to in order to keep up appearances#Fiyero sings this song to present himself as shallow and easy going instead of as downright unhappy as he is#ugh I know there are countless people who get this#I just wish the youtube essayists making 40 min + videos did too#fiyero tiggular#wicked the musical#wicked#wicked discourse#the potato rants in the tags

Am I alone in feeling like Mia wasn't a "saint" for letting a 17 year old and her 1 year old baby live in an uninsulated potting shed for free? I just feel like that wasn't the selfless gesture it was painted as
Hmm, well... I mean, I'm sure you're not completely alone, haha. But for me, I don't know... I feel like, when dealing with a fictional TV show, some things have to be taken on faith, as part of the premise. This isn't real life, just a story, and also different people just... react to different things differently. So. In the show, it was made fairly clear that Lorelai and Rory were happy there. They have fond memories of the place. Rory is eager to show her grandmother the place she sees as her first "home," and doesn't anticipate Emily's negative reaction to it. They made it cozy and homey. And, I mean, yeah, an uninsulated potting shed is not an ideal living situation in real life, especially for a very young child, but... humans throughout most of history have lived in largely uninsulated structures. As the characters were presented on the show (which is really all that they ARE, given that they're fictional constructs), Mia was a kind woman, so I can't see her letting them freeze to death or whatever. I'm sure she would have made arrangements for their safety if needed. The Inn, with plenty of heat and a fully-staffed kitchen, was just a few meters away if they ever needed to have "sleepovers" there on especially cold nights. I don't think there's a "hidden dark side" to Mia, who, as a fictional character, does not exist outside of what was written for her.
Should Mia have offered to let them live with her, in her actual home? I don't know. Maybe she didn't have room. Or maybe... Lorelai wouldn't have accepted that. She ran away because she wanted to make her own decisions for herself and for her daughter. Having her own "place" was important to her. Should Mia have paid for an additional actual apartment for them? I don't know if she would have been able to afford to pay rent for a second apartment in addition to her own housing expenses for ten years. There's no indication that Mia was a wealthy woman, and that's a substantial expense for most people. Lorelai and Rory living anywhere else would require them to pay rent. That's just how the world works, unfortunately. So, Mia let them live in a building that was already on her property, made it as comfortable as possible, and yeah, let them stay there for free. I don't know, I think that's still pretty nice. Lorelai not having to pay rent (which she would have had to do anywhere else) for ten years is the thing that allowed her to save enough money to BUY A HOUSE as a single mother in her twenties. I'm pretty sure Lorelai and Rory would have still been stuck in a crappy apartment otherwise (maybe upgrade to a slightly nicer apartment? But still an apartment nonetheless).
Or maybe I just read too many Boxcar Children books as a child. 😆

To my US American friends: as a foreigner safe and sound in Northern Europe I cannot claim to truly know or feel what you go through. Yes, these results will affect the world trade and economy, and wars both farther and closer to my home, and much more, but it’s you who may feel the first and most of the impact. I won’t minimize your pain or rub salt in the wound. And while I do believe that the world and democracy (even yours) will survive, there are a lot of better equipped people who can tell you that and why.
Instead I want to do what I can to keep you remembering that people are good. Not all of us, hell the voting results and the fact that Trump even exists is proof enough of that, but there is kindness and empathy in humanity. You know it. You’ve seen it. In your family or among your friends or through your partner or your colleagues or the cashier who still flashes you a smile and asks you to have a nice day when you check out five hours into their shift.
There’s this AJJ album I listened to on repeat couple years ago on my way to therapy for a mental breakdown, and the song «People» continues to stick to me to this day. It ends the whole album with the line: «I have faith in my fellow man/ and I only hope that he has faith in me.» It’s a pretty basic sentiment in a song that is neither complex nor profound. And on an album which is otherwise pretty bleak and pessimistic. There’s even a sequel song on the same album where the singer essentially declares utter doom and that the world doesn’t care if we live or die. But it’s not «People II: The Reckoning» they ended the LP with, and it’s not what I keep coming back to. I come back to that final line. Because that’s all I can do. Otherwise what the fuck is the point in going on?
The results are still fresh, so feel anything you need to right now be it fear or rage or grief or anything really. And take your time with it if you have to. But when you’re ready, or when you just can’t stand to be stuck with it anymore, try to do some good in small doses. If you can donate to charities and grassroots initiatives, do so. If you can and want to volunteer, then show up even for just one day to keep your local community going and growing. Spend time showing support to friends, and have fun with them too. Laughter really is a medicine. If you don’t feel like you have friends, let yourself make them. Stick close to your family, either the one that raised you or the one you chose or both. Thank the cashier on the way out of the store and say good day to her too. As sad as it is to repeat, kindness is a radical act in a cruel world. And it’s worth it.
Have faith in your fellow man. Hope he has faith in you too. I do.

No, but your headcanon that Dave has a similar personality to Rory (and I think I can see it!) is ADORABLE, because listen to this... I actually ended up marrying a person who has a similar personality to my best friend, myself! 😄 And I think there's really something there, in that subconscious recognition that "oh, this is a Type of Person I can feel safe and happy with."
Aww but yeah right? Also I just think that based on what little we got of Dave he just had too much in common with Rory personality-wise for that not be something worth exploring or declaring from if he’d stuck around.
They’re both pretty «square» (Dave’s speech to Mrs Kim says it all and so does Rory’s behaviour up until, during, and way past Spring Break). They can both get pretty jealous but good/desperate at hiding it (Rory’s messy messy acts in the start of season 3, Dave in the hockey game episode). They both take on pseudo-leadership roles without necessarily aspiring to be bosses (Rory with journalism and the Yale Daily News, Dave with the band). And also they’re both huge nerds that just specialize in different fields of nerd-dom. Need I say more?
It could’ve been pretty cool to see the writers explore what a male Rory and how masculinity and gender roles affect both how Dave would see himself or how others treat him. Hell, moving away from him for a sec, how different would Rory be as a dude? Would Richard baby her as much? Would Emily and Lorelai police her romantic and sexual autonomy as much? Would her smarts still be considered unique or an expectation, but would her faults be excused instead of shamed? Would she have gotten out blameless of the Dean situation if their genders were flipped? Would a female Logan still have?
Okay I need to stop myself before I write an unedited ten page rant on gender expectations in Gilmore Girls anyway Rory and Dave are both super cute and dorky and deserved to be friends and Lane has amazing taste in people both romantic and platonic (Zach mot withstanding)

It seems odd that in "Dear Emily and Richard," Rory doesn't meet Gigi onscreen after spending the episode deciding to attend her birth and helping Sherry at the hospital. Thinking about it a little more though, maybe it makes sense that the scene at the hospital cuts off with Lorelai and Christopher. Gigi's existence as a character is always in relation to Christopher, and she's primarily tied to Lorelai and Christopher's relationship with each other. They are planning to reunite just as Christopher finds out Sherry is pregnant and decides to stay with Sherry, Lorelai's jealousy of Sherry is a major point of focus at the baby shower, and Gigi's birth makes Lorelai remember her teenage relationship with Christopher. Then, Seasons 5 and 6 feature Lorelai helping with Gigi and Christopher realizing that he left Lorelai in a really difficult place when she raised Rory alone. In Season 7, Lorelai and Christopher co-parent Gigi as he repeatedly downplays the need to consider Rory's place in their family; Rory will be thrilled about their elopement in France (she wasn't, just like Lorelai predicted), Rory won't mind her room being rearranged to accommodate Gigi (she didn't, but Lorelai was uncomfortable with the changes), and it's a great idea to have another kid right away because Rory turned out so well (Lorelai reminds him that raising a child actually takes work).
Gigi is also a catalyst for some revelations about Christopher and Rory's relationship with each other. Christopher chooses to be in a nuclear family with Sherry and Gigi instead of Lorelai and Rory, he shows up (late) to Gigi's birth when he repeatedly hasn't shown up for Rory at all, and he calls Gigi "perfect" in conjunction with the flashback of him calling Rory "pretty." Christopher invests more effort with Gigi than he ever did with Rory, and both Lorelai and Rory are there to witness it.
Rory and Gigi's relationship with each other gets scraps of attention by comparison, but when they're together, Rory definitely seems to care about her. When Rory is hurt and angry about Christopher's relationship with Lorelai in Season 5, she still makes a point of acknowledging Gigi. In Season 7, Rory happily includes Gigi in her and Lorelai's holiday traditions, and when she visits Christopher in AYITL, she asks about her right away. When Rory says that she doesn't have any siblings in Season 4 and that she doesn't know what it's like to have a sister in "Bon Voyage," in-universe this could be perhaps interpreted most charitably as Rory not thinking of Gigi as a sibling she grew up with because they didn't grow up together and least charitably as her disowning Gigi out of jealousy. Considering that the writers barely spent any time on this relationship and that Gigi consistently vanishes from the narrative alongside Christopher, though, it wouldn't be surprising at all if they forgot about her when they wrote those lines too.

Not that it would be the most fitting for the overall Gilmore Girls narrative, but I feel like Hep Alien’s ideal career timeline (mostly for Lane but possibly all the band members) would have a lot in common with irl bands like LCD Soundsystem?
As in never getting pop chartbreaking, constant stadium tour levels of fame ala Foo Fighters, Coldplay etc but rather getting massive on the indie scene to the point where they could sell out massive shows. But then as they’re reaching those heights of success, somebody (most likely Zach or Dave) would push them to disband. This would be out of fear that if Hep Alien kept going for too long they would ruin a good thing and their legacy.
So all the band members go each their way, which probably includes Lane spending some time back at her mother’s place. She either eventually picks up production work and drummer gigs or just works at Mrs Kim’s Antiques until five-or-so years down the line when she admits that their disbanding was bullshit and she and Brian convince the guys that they should get back together. Hep Alien should just make music when they feel like it and not give a shit about audience or industry expectations. They announce their return with an album and coinciding tour, make an automatically decent splash and then stick to dropping songs every three-seven years while sporadically doing smaller shows in the New England/New York area, which cultivates a chiller and more stable fanbase.
If Zach and Lane still have the twins that gives them the time to be parents and rockstars at the same time, Dave can disappear to California during the hiatus and still do stuff on the side after the return, Gil can jump in and out of bandmembership or even be exclusive to the returned version and Brian gets to just be Brian.

Oh the pain of knowing, just knowing that if this beautifully messy show hadn’t come out in the early 2000s aka the late stage of «women are from Venus and men are from Mars» then Marty and Glenn would’ve been absolutely unhinged but stellar additions to Rory’s post Chilton friendgroup
