I think a (not big but still there) part of why Jess was having such a hard time admitting that he worked at Walmart was that he would have to admit that Dean was working for the independent mom-and-popstore movement (at least pre Soda-shoppe) while Jess anti-establishment-counter-culture-wannabe-punk-rock Mariano himself was working for The Man

Rory thought about it. A reunion on New Years Eve. Sending out invites to people she hadn’t seen in four to ten years because she was too lonely to spend the last day of 2010 alone. It sounded a little desperate, too desperate for her liking. So she tried to envision her New Years alone... Come to think of it, Rory could stand to be humbled by her desperation.
Part 1 of It's Gonna Be A Good Year, a Rory centered post-S7 NYE fic is up now!
Read here.

It's the way they made sure we knew that, not ONLY had Jess promised (cheerfully, no less!) to take Rory to the Prom, but that he was FOLLOWING THROUGH! They explicitly stated that he was sent to the office while he was TRYING to buy Prom tickets! And then even after the principal told him he was flunking out, he still kept trying to get them to let him go to the dance anyway so at least he'd get to give Rory this thing she wanted! Guys, he tried SO HARD! Like, the show made it VERY VERY CLEAR that he didn't just say one thing and then "not do it," they made sure to show that he was ACTIVELY TRYING! And KEPT TRYING to take her to Prom even as his own life was falling apart! If they could only let him do that ONE THING for HER, then at least not all would be lost. He was like, "Ok, I'm not graduating. That sucks, but you're missing the most important part here, which is that Rory wanted to go to the Prom." He CARED! SO MUCH! He really wanted to make her happy! 😫😭

Out of the three active WIPs I have going on two of them heavily feature Glenn Babble and different headcanons I’m making up on the spot about him.
I really am on the world wide web treating a barely there minor character on 2 seasons of Gilmore Girls like free real estate

The second chapter of Smells Like School Spirit is up on AO3!
Jess’s head popped up again and he stared hard.  “Is that… Did you just play the opening to Enter Sandman on the weight rack?!”
“Ding ding ding!  Shiny gold star for you!  I knew you would recognize that one.”
“Huh.”
“What, you think I don't know Metallica?”
“No no, it's just that metal's not your usual oeuvre, that's all.”
Lane's face contorted with disbelief, disdain, and barely suppressed glee.
“‘Not my usual oeuvre?’” she repeated with slow incredulity.  “I'm sorry… Did you just seriously use the word ‘oeuvre’ in a conversation?”
The tips of Jess's ears burned red.  “Yeah, so?” he said defensively.
“OH my G-d!” Lane jeered.  “You are such a NERD!  So that's why Rory likes you.”

Dinner at the crap shack with post original series! Lorelai, Luke, Sookie, Jackson and Jess who’s visiting (bonus points if Rory happens to be around too), and at some point early in the table conversation Lorelai and Jess make the exact same joke at the exact same time and freeze in horror.
And they try to play it cool, maybe one of them says «jinx you owe me a Coke» but then it happens again, and then again, and it keeps happening why do they have the same banter?? It’s scaring the hell out of them both (and giving the rest of the table some hilarious newfound clarity)

You know, I was really just looking at Lana del Rey’s songs right now to find some appropriate lyrics and roast Jess for being a Sad Girl TM.
But then I came across several NFR tracks in a row and realized how well they’d work for season 3 literati edits/gifs or songfics.
Well shit.

No but it’s the way Jess and Lorelai can barely be in the same room with each other, barely stand to look at each other, because when they do the discomfort is just too much because they don’t just see someone so far removed and different from one another they also see themselves.
If Lorelai looks at Jess too long she’ll see her own restlessness, her own rage, her need to claw her way out of the metaphorical room she was locked in and run as far away as possible. She sees a version of herself that won’t get a surprise key to freedom, a version still running head first into a concrete wall and it’s terrifying. And even worse she sees herself turning into the kind of person 16 year old Lorelai would feel judged and limited by.
Jess looks at Lorelai for too long and it’s like a damn funhouse mirror. Here is an alternate universe Jess 16 years down the line and she’s got all the quips and the intelligence and the snarky humour and avoidant tendencies. Here is a version of him that will spend so many years building a life for herself and trying to show everyone that she really did it she really made it and she’s happy and safe and successful but it will never be enough they will never let her forget that at her core she is a fuck up.
They can’t look at each other for too long because then they’ll have to look at all the things about themselves that they don’t want to admit is part of them. Lorelai’s grief and rage over how her parents could never really see her as much more than a «hurricane», even well into adulthood. Jess’ shameful desire to be accepted, to actually do good and be recognised for it and treated like family instead of like a reckless and antisocial threat. The past Lorelai doesn’t want to remember as heartbreakingly as it truly was. The future Jess can’t bear to prepare himself for, neither for the bad or the good.
It’s all just too much.
