so, i thought i’d be able to go one day without courting yet more Discourse but it seems that is not gonna happen.

tag filtering and blocking on Ao3 is all well and good, but? the problem is that people are using the main tag for a past relationship (flinthamilton) that is, let’s face it, part and parcel of at least James’ entire being, and so kind of goes without saying. You might as well tag a fic ‘Captain Flint used to be a lieutenant in the royal navy’.

That’s why I can’t really understand why a ‘dead!thomas au’ needs to be tagged ‘past james/thomas’ - what, you think people are going to be so triggered by the reminded that James was in love with Thomas that they need the warning? And if so….. how do these people watch the show?

however, i suppose that it can be justified, and obviously an author can tag a fic however they like. but why does it have to be a relationship tag? what possible reason could you have for making ‘past james/thomas’ a relationship tag? it’s already been explained multiple times that tagging a fic like that means that it shows up in the main relationship tag - and i’m sorry, but no one goes into the flinthamilton tag looking for a dead!thomas au.

it’s not like it’s impossible to change a tag once a fic has been posted, and it’s ridiculously easy to change a tag from being a relationship tag to an additional tag. i’ll even demonstrate using one of my own fics:

select the “edit tags” option

move the ‘past james/thomas’ tag from the “relationship tags” box to the “additional tags” box

it’s literally that easy. no one is asking for anyone to change the content of the tag, or to remove it. only to make it so that an au - where a canonically gay character who lives and reunites with his partner against all odds actually committed suicide after being tortured for years for the purposes of shipping his partner with his canonically straight best friend - doesn’t show up in the main tag for a relationship which is not included in that fic

it upsets people to see these AUs, it’s very easy to change it so that they don’t have to see them, and there’s no reason not to
