[This is 10-minutes script.] 

EXT. MR. MASANOBU’S HOUSE -EVENING A large wooden frame house. A nameplate is written as “Namiki” is on the old fence next to the gate.

INT. DINING ROOM-EVENING

A Japanese-style room is large as 20 tatami mats. There are a TV and a tea table in the room. Around the table, some floor cushions and a chair are located. The TV is on. Testu Namiki (14) is using his smartphone while lying down in the corner of the room. He is scrolling the phone and at the same time, he mumbles, moving his left side of his cheek. Koutaro Namiki (41) and Masanobu Namiki (78) open the door and come into the room. Koutaro Don’t be lazy. Sit up straight. Koutaro sits on the floor cushion, and Masanobu sits on the floor chair.

Masanobu Tetsu, you grew up, huh? Koutaro It’s just appearance. Tetsu turns over to the opposite side. Koutarou changes the channel. Tetsu Oh. Koutarou (He keeps eye on the TV) What? Tetsu Nothing. Never mind.

Koutarou You didn’t even watch it, did you? Tetsu I said, nothing. Masanobu You are always lying around. Tetsu If I got a sunburn, my teacher would blame me at the cram school.

Koutarou Then, why don’t you study instead? You don’t even know how expensive it is. Tetsu I always study at home. Koutarou What? Masanobu frowns and glances at Koutarou, switches his gaze to a clock on the wall. Masanobu Whatever, where has she gone? Koutarou She said that she would drop by the candy store, didn’t she? Masanobu The candy store….oh, the one at the corner? Koutarou Yes. Masanobu The old man with no teeth runs the shop. Koutarou I don’t care if he does have his teeth or not. (with laughing) Masanobu Speaking of teeth, the old woman, Ms. Murayama doesn’t have her teeth anymore.

Koutarou Murayama? Is that one of my class-mate? Masanobu That old lady opens her mouth when she laughs. (laughing) Koutarou I see. Tetsu moves his left side of his cheek constantly with his back to them. INT. ENTRANCE-EVENING The door was opened, and Ms. Namiki (36) comes in with some shopping bags.

INT. DINING ROOM-EVENING Mika’s voice comes from the hallway. Mika I’m home! Tetsu …Hey. Tetsu raises his head and replies to her. INT. KITCHEN-EVENING Mika puts the bags on the table and puts some ingredients into the refrigerator. Mika grabs the box of popsicle and leaves the kitchen. INT. DINING Mika Does anyone want a popsicle? Koutarou Oh, I do. Mika gives the ice crème to Koutarou. Mika Here you go. How about you? Masanobu Well, I don’t. Koutarou The elderly get a toothache when they eat this. Mika How about you, Tetsu? Mika takes a popsicle and put it in her mouth. Tetsu raises his upper body. Tetsu I do. Mika Oh, you do? It’s unusual.

Tetsu receives the popsicle from Mika. Mika You always say you don’t like a popsicle. Tetsu I feel like I want to eat it for now. Mika Well, it was very hot today. Koutarou Is dinner ready yet? Mika I’ll cook after I eat this. Mika leaves the dining room. Koutarou and Masanobu are watching TV. Tetsu starts eating the popsicle, using his right side of his teeth. EXT. ENTRANCE Tetsu with big baggage, Mika and Koutarou came out from the entrance. INT. INSIDE A CAR A car that Koutarou drives. They are listening to the radio. There is no conversation between them. Tetsu is using his smartphone in the passenger seat. Mika is also using her smartphone in the back seat. KOUTAROU NAMIKI’s HOUSE/TETSU’S ROOM-EVENING Tetsu is studying at his desk. He hears the sound of yelling. Mika I paid for all the meals for this time again! Koutarou So what? I drove all the way! Mika You what!? Tetsu sighs and puts some materials into his bag. EXT. SEIKO SEMINAR CRAM SCHOOL-EVENING A sign is written that “Seikou Seminar Cram School/second and third floor” is shining on the multi-tenant building.

ENTRANCE-EVENING Some teachers wearing suits are working on the counter. There is a banner printed that “Summer Intensive Course!” on the counter. An automatic door opens and Tetsu comes in. He writes his name on the name list. Kaoru Mashima (15) is shitting on the sofa next to the counter. Daisuke Sakamoto comes into the school with a plastic bag. Teacher A Mr. Sakamoto! Where have you been? Sakamoto I bought some treats for 3rd-grade students who came back from summer vacation. Sakamoto raises his plastic bag. Tetsu and Kaoru face up each other. Sakamoto Oh, Mashima. I’ll give you a treat. Sakamoto is approaching Kaoru and gives a popsicle. Kaoru Well…Thank you. Sakamoto gives a popsicle to Tetsu. Tetsu Um...I don't… Sakamoto Don’t be shy! Well. I think there are some in the self-study room…. Sakamoto makes him have a popsicle and goes to the hallway. Tetsu gaze at the popsicle. His eyes meet hers over the popsicle. Kaoru Hey, Namiki. Tetsu Hey. Kaoru I don’t know why he gave it to me, but it’s kinda lucky, isn’t it? Tetsu sits down on the sofa across from the Kaoru’s sofa. Kaoru opens the package of the popsicle and starts eating it.

Tetsu Hey, Majima, would you like this, too? Kaoru Why? Oh, you have a bad tooth? Tetsu Well, Yes. Kind of. Kaoru It hurts so much, I know. Recently, I go to the dentist. My mom is especially picky about this, saying as long as I’m in junior high, it costs only 200 yen. Tetsu I see. Kaoru I’m good. Well…how about giving it to a teacher? Tetsu No…I’ll eat it instead. Tetsu breaks the package and put it into his mouth. Tetsu frowns with tears. Kaoru laughs.

PARASOL

EXT. OGATA’S HOUSE -MORNING A single-story house that is surrounded by woods and fields. Many cicadas are shrilling.

INT. OGATA’S HOUSE -HALLWAY- MORNING Yui Ogata (18) is bringing her glass of water. She is wearing pyjamas, and her hair is messy. She is holding her smartphone. She passes by a room. She peeks  inside the room and then she calls someone. 

Yui Mom?

Yui tilts her head confused and she starts to walk.

OGATA’S HOUSE - GUEST ROOM- MORNING A small altar is located in the corner of the room. An old woman’s picture is in it. A picture of an old woman is in it. Yui puts a glass of water and claps her hands in front and pays respect. 

OGATA’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - MORNING Simple Japanese-style room. There is an old chair which is next to the TV. The color of the chair is starting to fade. There was a note left on top of the table. Yui enters the room. She places her smartphone on the table, picks up the note, and sits down on the floor. Written in the note was “I’m going to stay at my colleague’s  house for a couple of days.”

Yui sighs and pushes her hair back. Her smartphone vibrates for a little bit. She opened her phone and reads a message from “Ken Kuramoto”, saying “Are you free tomorrow?”

Yui replies shortly “Why?”.  Ken continues, ”We’re going to eat out at the Japanese restaurant near the station, and my parents said you should invite your girlfriend.” Yui thinks about it for some time, and replies, “I will ask my parents about it later. “... “I will text you by today.” Yui sighs again.

ON THE ROAD - EVENING  On a wide street. Some street lights start to turn on little by little. There are barely anyone on the road. Ken Kuramoto (22) is walking. He stops in front of the intersection. While waiting for the traffic light, he takes out his smartphone. He receives a message from Yui, “I’m sorry but it looks like I can’t go tomorrow. Enjoy your dinner.” Kunimoto stares at his smartphone. A heavy truck is rushing towards the intersection making a loud noise. Kunimoto raises his face with the heavy truck  out of balanced approaching right before his eyes.

INT. MATSUMOTO PREFECTURAL HOSPITAL /HALLWAY IN FRONT OF  THE ICU - NIGHT Some people are sitting on the long chair which lines along the hallway, while others are just standing. Yui is sitting on the far end of the chair, away from the ICU. A doctor comes out  from the ICU. Kuramoto’s family stand up and run to the doctor.Yui is staring blankly at  the scene.

EXT. ROAD  A blue car is traveling along the coastal national highway. The sky is painted with grey clouds.

EXT. PARKING LOT  A gravelled parking lot. There are some green weeds in some parts.  The blue car stops at the parking lot. Aya Ota (18) gets out of the driver’s side, and Yui gets off the passenger seat. Aya opens the rear door, and takes out large baggage and parasol which is coloured blue and white.

EXT. BEACH  Small beach  surrounded by cliffs. They set up a beach parasol. They are lying under the parasol, wearing swimsuits. Aya starts talking while staring at the sky. 

Aya Tokyo?

Yui Yup. He was taken to the hospital by an emergency helicopter. I’ve never seen that before.

Aya That’s like a TV show..“Code Blue”.

Yui Exactly.

Aya Huh. Well, you missed your chance to break up with him again.

Yui I did. Maybe.

Yui is lying down facing up with her eye closed. 

Yui Anyways, I relieved he didn’t die, you know?

Aya Huh?

Yui It would be a disaster if my last relationship ended like this.

Aya Well...There are some people like that. For sure.

Yui opens her eyes, turns over to Aya’s side. She looks at Aya and takes her eyes off. She looks at the picnic sheet.

Yui I just wanted a boyfriend. He, also, wanted a girlfriend somehow.

Aya Right.

Yui It’s something like... “What? Does he like me?” and while making sure if that’s true...

Aya Hehe

Yui  I couldn’t turn back anymore. That’s kind of thing happens sometimes, right?

Aya Well, yeah, it happens.

Aya laughs and nods. Yui gets infected by it and stares at Aya.

Yui I’m cold.

Yui gets up, searching for her bag. 

Yui Oh, I didn’t bring my towel. Do you have yours?

Aya Yup.

Yui takes out a towel from Aya’s bag. She lies down by Aya’s side with laughing. Yui puts a towel on them. 

Yui I can share this with you.

Aya Today isn’t the right day to go to the beach.

Aya Do you think so too?

They smile at each other.

EXT. THE PARKING LOT - EVENING They are loading their bags on a cart. Aya loads parasol coloured blue and white on a cart. She closes the door of the back seat. Yui is still gazing at the beach. Aya gets in the car and closes the door. She comes to her senses by that sound and gets in the passenger seat. 

EXT. CONVENIENT STORE - NIGHT A convenient store which is along the national highway by the beach. There is a sign which is written “Yanagimatsu interchange”. There is only one car parking on the parking lot. The door opens, Yui and Aya come out. Aya is eating chocolate ice cream, and Yui is eating a cheaper one. They sit on the buffer stop. Yui’s phone rings. She checked her phone while eating. Yui looks glum. The phone rings again. Aya bites her chocolate ice cream. 

Aya Is it from your mom or dad?

Yui Kind of. Ms. Masako Kunimoto.

Aya WHAT...

Aya screams with ice cream in her mouth. She wallows it and looks into Yui’s phone.

Aya Let me see.. oh, it’s kinda parent-ish...

Yui gazes at the phone. Aya takes a side glance. 

Aya Hey... do you wanna go to Tokyo?

Yui WHAT?

Aya I said Tokyo.

Yui But...

Aya It doesn’t matter, is it? Let’s go right now.

Yui No, no, I don’t have any money. I couldn’t even afford a chocolate ice cream, you know?

Aya I have some cash and my card. We can use local roads if you want.

Yui How many days will it take...?

Aya Who cares! You don’t have any plans, do you?

Yui But...but this car isn’t yours...

Aya It’s my sister’s. She will come back from Italy in three weeks. 

Yui gazes at the grounds. 

Aya Hey, we can go!

Yui ....I just need to pack.

Aya All right!

Aya raises her hand holding her chocolate ice cream. Yui faces up and laughs.
